. .• ' !3 • 4 ' ' ■ ■ Dedication ' Honor thy father and mother both in word and deed, that a blessing may come upon thee from them. ECCLESIASTICUS. I. 2. Indeed the past is but a prelude to the future. Here at Monmouth and even before this, we have been training for what we will become. For helpful guidance throughout all our lives, for interest in Monmouth College, for patience with our growing pains, for the opportunity of going on with our education, for willingness to sit at home waiting for a letter, and for giving us the best of themselves, we of Monmouth College gratefully dedicate the 1960-1961 Ravelings to OUR PARENTS. Here ' s To Our College It is, sirs, a small college, and yet there are those who love it. Daniel Webster % The beginnings of all things are small. Cicero To Culture - Music resembles poetry; in each Are nameless graces which no methods teach, And which a master-hand alone can reach. Pope To Sports T LJ When the one Great Scorer comes To write beside your name, He writes not that you won or lost. But how you played the game. To Scholarship ■a All rests with those who read. A word or thought Is what each makes it to himself, and may Be full of great dark meanings, like the sea. With shoals of life rushing. Bailev n To Relaxation - -It ■v.- % . There be delights, there be recreations and jolly pastimes that will fetch the day about from sun to sun. and rock the tedious year as in a delightful dream. Milton 13 To Our Past 14 A good digestion to you all; and once more, I shower a welcome on you; Welcome all. Faith is the substance of things hoped for. the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews XI 1. 15 To Our Future We know what we are, but know not what we may be. Shakespeare U l - r All ' s well that ends well. President Gibson hard at work. 20 The President ' s Message Strange as it may seem to some, the Ravelings is a very practical book. We turn to it with enthusiasm the first day that it comes off the press that we may see what pictures, what events have been recorded. In the years to come it will be even more valuable as it reminds us of times long past and enables us to recognize friends whom we haven ' t seen for a decade or more. You will do well to make sure that this book is placed where it will not be lost, for again and again you will be turning to it for important information. Monmouth College is grateful to the committee that has made possible this splendid volume. Robert W. Gibson President 21 Administration Staff Judy Calhoun, Dave Fleming Linda Free. Gloria Hooper. With a tremendous start at the beginning of the season, the Fighting Scots received a national rating for defense, and provided the student body with an afternoon of pleasure. Plagued with injuries the Fighting Scots lost the potential drive, but had a good showing at Knox. Although losing many senior players, the freshmen along with the returning lettermen should keep the Fighting Scots as top contenders. Al Carius, Jim Brotheridge, and Harold Rathgeb led the season as the three top scorers. Varsity Basketball - J ! — Row 1: W. De Groot, G. Larson, W. Reinsberg, J. Mell, T. Wilkinson. D. Arnold. Bud McRoberts was elected to the all conference team and Jerry Mell to the second team while John Reasoner was given honorable mention. McRoberts also cap- tured the conference scoring title with a 2L2 average. Jerry Mell and John Reasner cap- tured the eighth and tenth places respectively in the scoring race. Graduation will take seven players, but with strong freshmen prospects, the Fighting Scots could prove to have a strong team again next year. 47 Fighting Scots 48 [n Action t - • b aJQ V 1 r.i 1 rf mi tm£JMi% ii ! i ' ' A 3W™ y m  J «l C -v ' ' -  a Lfi ' V ' H Nv JI Km dJ. 1 mm 49 Wee Scots Basketball « Row 1: B. With a large group of Scots graduating, there will be plenty of room for the Wee Scots on next year ' s varsity squad. Swimming Row 1: C. Demas, P. Ellefsen, P. Peacock. Row 2: Mr. Corporon, D. Acheson, J. Millen. B. Best. The Scots tankmen struggled through a much defeated sea- son, with only small consolation. Coached by John Corporon, the Scots swimmers can look forward to a more promising season next year. With a very fine group of Wee Scot swim- mers, the Varsity should prove a threat for the next couple of years. mo Q 51 Wrestling J. Phillips. L. Polz, C. Borine, L. Pronga, D. Carroll, W. Mammen, K. Knox, D. Harriss, J. Klusendorf. The wrestling team this year gave a tre- mendous showing at the conference meet. C. hurtlers were off to a tremendous start by win- ning their own quadrangular. Glen Brooks had a tremen- dous season by taking first two places in the M. C. relays and setting two records. With other returning lettermen Paul Moye, Tom Bollman, Carl Borine, Bill DeGroot and Dennis Lachell and coupled with a fine group of Sophomores the track team will be looking forward to another victorious season. Off to a poor start the M. C. runners, with only a few men, worked hard. Soon interest grew and more turned out to help finish the season. The Wee Scot team proved to be very promising and should give the varsity runners some stiff competi- tion for next year ' s starters. Another first for Glen. 53 Baseball Row 1: J. Greer, G. With Jerry Greer, who led the squad in hits last year, Jerry Mell, Don Elliott, Harry McDaniels, Ken Rager, Harry Billups, Gary Larson, Gene Phillips and John Allen. Coupled with some fine Sophomore baseball players, the fighting Scots are looking forward to a fine sea- son. Coe again, will be the team to beat in the southern conference. Tennis The tennis team began the season with a handicap since top man, Frank Adam was unable to play because of a broken ankle. However, they put up a good fight by prac- ticing long and hard and trying their hardest. The members of the tennis team are: Bill Reinsberg, Richard Wallem, Frank Adam, Larry Gibb, Rick Goodale, and Paul Kempin. 55 JUNIORS CLASS OFFICERS President Tom Weeks Vice President Jerry Mell Secretary Sue Nickel Treasurer Rod McQueen Athletic Representative Tom Davis Frank Adam John Allaman Florence Anderson Robert Ardell NOREEN BATEK Paul Amann Carol Anderson Marjorie Armstrong Paul Arnstrom Don Brannan SONJA Brown Bill Bruington Gail Buffo 57 James Calhoun Deeks Carroll YOLANDA CeBALLOS Barbara Coleman Carol Ann Davis Tom Davis D ick De Forest Bill De Groot Bob De Vett Sandy Downs 58 Ardith Elliott Dennis Faust An evening at the Flamingo Sandra Foreman Betsy Galloway Nancy Glenn Jerry Greek Larry Greer Nancy Guilinger Karen Harr Dick Harriss Robert Heath Pat Henry Bill Hubbard Skip Hunt S. Administered by the Associated Colleges of the Midwest, the Argonne Plan offered modern facilities and a wide range of experience to ten select and ambitious students of science. A keen interest in poli- tics and government had an outlet at the American University in Washington, D. C, where numerous chances to come into close contact with the upper echelons of democracy were given to a few quali- fied students second se- mester each year. A broad range of opportunities and a deeper knowledge of many phases of govern- ment afforded these ambi- tious ones some unforget- table experiences. mm -m ■W5SRJ r fcf v J. Hornaday, L. McKeown. T.
