Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1959 volume:

WLwrnutii CoECege 1959 Throughout the four seasons of the year, Monmouth College, steeped in century-old Scottish tradition, pro- vides us with a keen challenge in our mental and spiritual outlook, opportunities for the advancement of leadership qualities, and camaraderie that will endure for many years. f - ' 4 j .r i ji- 3- m- L - - :5- -....li - mmr i In the fall, we watch the greenery of our campus make a wondrous transition to the orange and yello s ' hues of Indian summer. A crunchy blanket of frosty snow makes our trip up the big hill to Wallace Hall doubly difficult. As the snow melts away, our short arc of seasons finishes m the mildness of spring — new life growing from the hibernating winter. So goes our college life — developing through the new experiences of our freshman year to the rich, intel- lectual rewards of commencement. Thiessen, an outstanding scientist and professor with twinkling eyes, a friendly grin, and an amazing ca- pacity for composing limericks, has ad- vanced the cause of science both here on our college campus, in classes and labo- ratories, and in various parts of the coun- try through intensive research. Many young men and women have been inspired by this man to enter the professional fields of science. To this man, who, by his guidance, has helped so many of us, we gratefully dedi- cate this book. Ih Vmldmi ' i (Heddo e During my freshman year in college, I kept a diary. I have to confess that it is the only time that I ever wrote a day-to-day record of events in my own life. Now I discover that it is no longer necessary for freshmen, sophomores, jun- iors or seniors to keep a diary of events while m college. The editors of the Ravelings have a way of taking pictures at the right time, recording the names of all our friends, listing the scores of the games we will always want to re- member, and reflecting the life of the school both at work and at play. Long after 1959 is past, we will be turning to this book for dates and data, names and places, events and speakers. Bemg a record of the activities of many people over a period of one year, this book has a human interest not only to those whose names and pictures appear within its pages, but to young people in high school looking forward to college and to those in other colleges com- paring campus activities. The value of this volume is not easily determined. Right now vibrant with life and arousing so many memories, we wonder how we could get along with- out it, but years hence, when old friends gather and we begin to talk about the days of old, it will really be priceless. The hard work performed by the editors and photographers finds its reward in the appreciation which is felt now and will be felt for years to come by many of us who find great satisfac- tion between the pages of this book. Regis- tration for classes was the first item on the calen- dar, followed by the thrilling, but tiring walk-out. 1 he memorable day was brought to a close by the Tennis Court dance. The frightening S.W.A.F. Chapels began with those unforgettable beanies and hilarious stunts. Finally, during Homecoming time, a strenuous tug-of- war between the freshman and sopho- more girls ended the ordeal. i i ' - m w — - f Cead l Ki;D Abi;ulin B CK AoAiK miiJmK SrsAN Adams lOHN AlJ.AMAN Pail Amann Flouenck Ann Anderson Robert Akdell Makjokie Armstrong Bart Blinstruf I-HANK Adams Cak(il Ann ANDtitsoN RoiTKT Best 1; L- ; iiiiik ■ (■Mil ' JEilimii ' SoN A Brown Bill Bruington Roger Burdette Dave Campbell Charlotte Carlton Deeks Carroll Barb Coleman Sally Daniels Karen Deen Sandy Downs Ardith Elliott Dennis Faust Donna Fink Dick Fisher Larry Fleming Tammy Frazier Dana Furry Fran Galaty Betsy Galloway Sheldra Gauden Nancy Glenn Richard Goetz Dave Graff Jerry Greer Larry Greer Nancy Guilinger Grover Hankins Karen Harr Dick Harriss Marilyn Henning Leslie Higgins U ' DY Hill Karen Hollsten John Hostettler Bill Hlibbard 24 S£ GWEN HUTTON Bill Iueland David IoH ■so Jean Johnson Earl Jones JOANN Kenas Jean Kimmel Lloyd Kinzer Peggy Knapp DliWyanne Knox Gerald Kohn John Kri egsman KaTSUMI KrSNHARA 25 Carol LaVigna Jim Layman Judy Lips Ronald Lorenzen Mervyn Loya Jim M agar I Another sloiv one, Don Patsy McClinton Ellen McCullough Bob McElwain Bonnie McIlrath 26 Pat McMahon Dan McMasters Rodney McQueen Larry Manning Glen Markle Janie Morrill Jim Morris Phil Muntzel Susan Nickel Peg Nicklin Linda Nielsen Shirley Olsson Sue Page Terry Park Jan Pearson Roger Pearson 27 ll DV PiNNEY Charles Pogue JiDY Randall Sall-i ' Reed Bakb Richmond Jane Robb Joan Roth a us Karen Sandberg Claldl Sawyer I I, You ' re lookii: lovcl], boys Sue Schmidt 28 Bruce Stavenhagen Don Stevenson Kaylor Stevenson Sue Streech Curt Strube Pete Swano Gloria Swanson Janet Swanson Jack Tapper Audrey Tenhaeff 29 Linda Thurnburg Richard Tornquist Marilyn Tracy Nancy Turner Dick Vessel Pam Walton Tom Weeks [- -- - l tw KkM Guy Welch Ken Wendling Harry Young Kin Dunlaf Joyce Luenstroth 30 r ■ ! rf i 1 J yP i ' 5? Uo Ui) ' BaMJM Although Monmouth ' s conference record of seven wins and nine losses was one game worse than last year ' s eight-wms, eight- losses record, it was a better record than had been predicted for the Fighting Scots. The team was in the midst of rebuild- ing throughout the year and since graduation will leave the team intact, a fine team is sure to emerge to hit for top honors. Scores cannot tell the entire story. There was much that was brilliant but also much that was inconsistent in the Scots Play. Bud McRoberts ranked tenth in the top tvv ' enty scorers in the conference with 27°) points and Ken Mueller with 133 points ranked twentieth. There were many exciting moments, among them the heart-breaking loss to Knox 67-66. But the final game of the year against Lawrence, when Gary Larson made the do or die shot from behind the free throwline with one second to go, was undoubtedly a fitting finish to a good year and a bright prediction of things to come next year. There seems to be an increased interest, in this most ancient of sports and also a larger spec- tator following than in the past. Matmen Carl Borine and Roger E. To become a member, one must belong to Dramatics 136, the freshman dramatics group, and serve an apprenticeship during this time. Crimson Masque, steeped in traditions, is one of the largest groups on campus. We are proud of our theatre and are equally proud to serve the students and faculty by presenting high quality, enjoyable, dramatic productions. Haimalt CoSkqlak Vixufm National Collegiate Players is the honorary dra- matics Society. One must earn a number of points in various theatrical activities and have a 2.5 overall average in order to be initiated. Membership is permanent and coveted.
