V « r DimCATlON To Mr. Frank Phillips, who has given 47 years of his life to the furtherance of education, we dedicate this book. He has labored long and untiringly with the result that many of his for- mer students are now actively engaged in his chosen profession. The field of education plays a key role in the curriculum of a liberal arts school such as Monmouth. The fu- ture is strongly dependent upon it. Men such as Mr. Phillips have, by their encouraging and sympathetic manner, aided us along the road of higher knowledge. MR. FRANK W. PHILLIPS Bk J ISHS. THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Years have a way of acquiring distinctive qualities. Every one of the 105 years of Mon- mouth ' s history has been a little different from every other year. For many on our campus, 1957-58 will stand out as a year that will always be different from all the others. Was it the unusually cold winter? A college career begun — a college career com- pleted — grave decisions made — special honors achieved — the giving and receiving of a diamond — or was it new horizons glimpsed and new motivation acquired? In any event, it is fine that all year long writers and photographers have been observing the moving events, from month to month, and have carefully catalogued them in this book which will give us a valued and permanent record. For years to come we will be turning to this book to check on scores, on names and faces and dates, and simply to recall some of the high moments of a college career. This book will tell us that this was the year that certain members of the faculty came to the college, and it will remind us as well of those who for many years have given unusual leadership and service to the institution. History books will record the fascinating tale of Sputnik I and Sputnik II and of other world-cracking events, but this book will record the history of a significant year in the life of each and every one of us. Little wonder that we feel deeply indebted to the Editor and all those associated with her who have made possible this delightful book whose ownership we shall always prize. Robert W. Monmouth freshmen found new friends at the exhausting, exciting, and profitable Walk-Out, followed by the lively Tennis Court dance. Only a few weeks afterward, the flu-bug bit, and many Scots were down and out with the sick- ness. Quick recoveries were made, and things went on, as usual, around campus. Sr£KOUZ Koses MC ' S DRAMATIC MOMENTS The Perils of Pamona or Passion Midst the Palmettoes will be remembered as the searing production of last fall. Jan Hamilton as the Indian maid. Pamona, and John Nib- lock as George Peyton, supported by the rest of a splendid cast, provided an evening up to the tradition of other Crimson Masque pro- ducti ons. 28 A tomboy maiden of medieval France with an incessant desire to save her country . . . voices from the heavens ... a crude, drunken Army captain . . . painful, prej- udiced inquisition . . . and a mar- tyrdom at the burning stake . . . all these were combined in the Crimson Masque production of The Lark, given in early Decem- ber. April Zorn ' s inspired inter- pretation of Jeanne d ' Arc, plus the solid support of the rest of the cast, turned out a polished per- formance. 1 iCWJ % W - .- ' - - ■ ' Jb f . s- L mn ifl if fisf ' y - « wM - j , ' ' C-- Bf i 1 ;! iP ' m  K V ' -•5 SENIORS DEAN FISCHER. Eligible for varsity letters were Dave Bergstrom, Tom Cheetham, George Francis, Dave Johnson, Dick Little, Dick Sloan, Mickey Trevor, Don Wirth, and Pete Weber. WRESTLING Scot grapplers won only one dual meet this year but managed to tie two others. Coach Joe Pelisek ' s squad took a seventh place in the conference meet. TRACK, 1957 Coach Chuck Larson had eight lettermen back this year from last year ' s squad which took fifth place in the conference meet held at Monmouth. Among those return- ing this season are Bud Cook, Len Gibb, Don Graham, Ed Honath, Bob McKee, Bill Richard, Sandy Robertson and Tad Yarde. FOOTBALL Although the Scots ' football record was not too impressive as far as wins go, the team was trying out on the field every minute. Their never-say-die attitude paid off in the final game as they beat Lawrence decisively. The Scots, under new coach Joe Pelisek, faced some tough opponents during their eight game season. Several players received conference honors at the end of the season and Bob McKee was named co-captain of the all-state college team and received profes- sional offers. With a number of lettermen and some promising freshmen returning next year, the team seems certain to better its record. THE FIGHTING SCOTS With the return of four starters from the conference co-champions of 1956-57, the Scot basketball team was favored for another great season last year. Although the Scots played well in most games and showed signs of brilliance, the squeakers which they had come from behind to win the year before seemed to go the other way this season. The Scots started out with three conference wins but lost to Cornell during Bob McKee ' s absence with an ankle injury. With McKee back, the Scots gave Creighton University a scare, and won several others, but heartbreaking losses to Knox and Carleton virtually ended their con- ference title hopes. The Scots finished with an 8-8 conference record and a 10-12 overall record.
