MONETT JUNIOR COLLEGE In September, 1927, Monett Junior College was organized and placed under the administration of Superintendent C. E. Evans. About thirty students enrolled the first year, seven- teen of whom were graduated in the spring of 1929. The present dean, M. L. Coleman, succeeded Superintendent Evans in 1929, and through his efforts and leadership the col- lege has gradually increased both in enrollment and in service to the young people of the community. In the early years the college was loyally supported by the Monett Junior College booster Club, the P. T. A.'s, the churches, and many leading citizens of the community. Today the college is recognized as a permanent institution for which no apology is offered. A complete two-year curriculum was established in 1928, and has continued since. The college now offers ninety-nine semester hours and is accredited by both the State Department and the University of Missouri. The total enrollment for this year was one hundred nine. Many graduates of M. J. C. are today holding honorable and responsible positions. There are indications at present that a few new courses will be offered next year and that the enrollment will be the greatest in the history of the college.

Their objective was better understanding of present-day social problems and public affairs. The students themselves decide upon subjects of a public nature which shall be considered for discussion. Social Security, farm problems, power issue, price stabil- ization, neutrality and international affairs are some of the subjects discussed. Naturally a considerable amount of preparation is done in order to be fully conversant with the subject. After the speakers are heard, open discussions are held and student participation is encouraged. In the Forum students are given an opportunity to hear both sides of controversial issues, emphasis being placed on distinguishing propaganda from fact. Thus, training is provided in the skills of discussion and methods of critical analysis, and the student is enabled to keep abreast of the changing times.
