V7 MONETT JUNIOR COLLEGE In September, 1927, Monett Junior College was organized and placed under the administration of Superintendent C. E. Evans. About thirty students enrolled the first year, seven- teen of whom were graduated in the spring of 1929. The present dean, M. L. Coleman, succeeded Superintendent Evans in 1929, and through his efforts and leadership the col- lege has gradually increased both in enrollment and in service to the young people of the community. In the early years the college was loyally supported by the Monett Junior College booster Club, the P. T. A.'s, the churches, and many leading citizens of the community. Today the college is recognized as a permanent institution for which no apology is offered. A complete two-year curriculum was established in 1928, and has continued since. The college now offers ninety-nine semester hours and is accredited by both the State Department and the University of Missouri. The total enrollment for this year was one hundred nine. Many graduates of M. J. C. are today holding honorable and responsible positions. There are indications at present that a few new courses will be offered next year and that the enrollment will be the greatest in the history of the college. 2'J.ui2U -M J so 1111.5 5 .J f 5, , Q 5234...-1 :umm ig Wie -9 H523 25 aah l'd:..LJ J., W. ,Q hu jzefvrsq FORUM CLUB In 1936 the social science classes organized a Forum Club as an integral part of their regular class work. Their objective was better understanding of present-day social problems and public affairs. The students themselves decide upon subjects of a public nature which shall be considered for discussion. Social Security, farm problems, power issue, price stabil- ization, neutrality and international affairs are some of the subjects discussed. Naturally a considerable amount of preparation is done in order to be fully conversant with the subject. After the speakers are heard, open discussions are held and student participation is encouraged. In the Forum students are given an opportunity to hear both sides of controversial issues, emphasis being placed on distinguishing propaganda from fact. Thus, training is provided in the skills of discussion and methods of critical analysis, and the student is enabled to keep abreast of the changing times. Science Seminar was organized by H.C. Davis, together with several of the students ln science in the year of 1956 It was the desire of this group to keep up with the recent developments in the scientific world, which led to the organization of the Science Seminar. Science Seminar is an organization of college students, membership being limited to those in the science department This year the club affiliated with the Missouri Academy of Science, which we consider a step of major importance to the progress and perpetuation of this organization. A number of members attended the Missouri Academy of Science meeting at Rolla School of Mines on April 25, 1958. Most of the members also made the annual trip to the Joplin- Galena-Pltcher mining district. Meetings are held once each week, and at each meeting a student reports on some scientific subject of recent publicity, a subject on which perhaps some valuable discovery has been made. However, this year the program was altered to include several prominent outside speakers. In this manner the membership of this club keeps 'right up to the minute' in the ever advancing field of science. The club colors are red and black, and the emblem is a missing link. Each year the club endeavors to lend its support to worthwhile activities. In 1936, the club published the college annual, Mo Ju Co. In 1937, they sponsored a tea in honor of the Senior girls of all schools attending the Monett Music Festival. This is to be an annual observance in order to acquaint students with our college. OFFICERS Mae Griffith ...... ...... . President Virginia Smith ...... .. Vice President Christine Turner .... .....
