The Rvluarh Look boys 1sn t that an auto commg around the bend yonder? The speaker Glendon Allen was one of a crowd of college students who were out on a camplng tr1p The1r camp was on Elk rn er IH Cal1forn1a It was 1n a valley and IH the fork of two roads The mam road ran to w1th1n a mlle of thelr camp then branched 1nto two roads It was m thls fork and on the banks of the Elk whlch crossed both roads that they had pltched thelr camp They had 1ust stralghtened thelr camp that day and had been lounglng around the fire smokmg and telhng storles It was real dark and Glendon who had been lylng so that he faced the road had suddenly seen two huge l1ghts whlch had caused hlm to utter the above QXDFQSQIOH It certa1nly looks hke It and yes lt 13 sald Prank Harrmgton What shall we do? Now the approach of an auto 18 no unusual thlng but the fact that lt would be compelled to cross L brldge that was partlftlly burned away was qu1te another v1ew and the boys understood that they would have to do someth1ng and 1mmed1ately 1f they saved the occupants of the car Well we must do somethmg and not slt here and watch them rlde to certa1n death for that car can cover a m1le ln a very short t1me and see It IS comlng at a hlgh speed So saymg Glen 1umped up grabbed h1s hat and ran to the br1dge lt had burned away by now but the trelhs was left although It was st1ll burnlng Glen put one foot on the fast burnmg trell1 then another and thus step by step began to caut1ously cross the brldge not heedlng the alarmed CF199 of h1s compan1ons But lt was a dangerous rlsk and Glendon felt the lmportance of each step fully reahzed that 1f h1s foot should sl1p he would be swallowed up by the gushmg torrent below But then there were the occupants of that car There was no telllng who was IH lt Perhaps a wlfe and ch1ldren golng to see hel husband and father perhaps an aged mother go1ng to the bedslde of a dy1ng son Then aga1n lt mlght be a crowd of men only out on 1 good tlme At th1s last thought he hesl tated He was half way across now and he looked down upon the seethmg waters below What lf 1t were a crowd of good for nothlng men no doubt they had WIVGS and lf not they had mothers and slsters Yes he must rescue them even at the great per1l All these thoughts passed through h1s mlnd as he was walklng the trellls and he had cox ered the greater part of the dlstance He could hear the fire cracklmg beneath h1s feet and th1nk1ng of h1s comrades he lnx ol untarlly glanced back As he d1d thls h1s foot sllpped nd It was only w1th the greatest efforts that he aga1n got a steady footlng lhe car was fast approachmg so he pushed on trymg to qulcken h1s pace He h 1d 1ust a few steps to make Oh would he nexel reach the other s1de' The cal was commg on but seemed to haxe slackened 1ts speed One more step at last he had reached the other s1de sl - y .
