Aahxne auth the llxgrnn In the New York dlvorce court Mr Van Dyke a wealthy 1es1dent of New York IS endeasormg to obtam a dlvorce from h1s wlfe The case has been IH court two days when Mr Van Dyke obtalns h1s dlvorce and the custody of h1s son Walter 1un1or age five The mother IS granted the custody of the gnl Nad1ne age seven She pleads w1th the 1udge to g1ve her the boy and not separate brother and s1ster but she pleads IH va1n Mrs Van Dyke and Nad1ne have packed a few belonglngs and are pre par1ng to leave thelr Irlfth avenue home Walter and Nad1ne do not fully reallze what 19 about to take place When thelr playthlngs are d1v1ded Nad1ne 19 about to leaxe when her eyes catch slght of a large g1lt cage whlch slts on a table IH the room In the cage are two beautlful carrler plgeons Walter takes one from the cage and hands It to h1s s1ster then she goes Walter and h1s father find It very lonesome 1n such a large house but Mr Van Dyke IS a verv self w1lled man and though he would take h1s w1fe back agam he lb too ploud to seek her forglveness Meanw h1le Nad1ne and her mother do not fare so well Although Mrs Van Dyke has been sew1ng smce the separatlon she finds her funds are runnmg low 'She IQ strlcken w1th the slow fever not belng used to such mcessant labor There was no one to care for her but Nad1ne who feels badly over her mother s xllness and lb homeslck She has been separated from her father and Dy ke was not as well as usual The doctor left several prescrlptlons to be taken to the drug store and departed Mrs V-ln Dyke fell lnto a llght sleep shortly after the doctor had left When Nad1ne was sure that her mother was asleep she lald her head on the table and wept for she was homeslck and had no money w1th whlch to procure the med1c1ne for her mother Whlle she was s1tt1ng 1n thls pos1t1on the pxgeon perched 1tself on her shouldel Nad1ne talked to the blld tellmg h1m all her troubles after whlch she felt better Whlle she sat ponderlng a plan was slowly formed ln her ITIIHCI Tak1ng a small plece of note paper she wlote the follow mg short message Dear Papa It has been so long smce I saw you and brother Mother 1s so slck that I want you to come to us Nad1ne Thls note she t1ed around the plg9OI'l s neck opened the w1ndow and after saylng a few words to It rllowed It to fly awav The blrd soared unceltalnly fol awhlle but 'ts It became accustomed to lt and felt the 1oy of belng at llberty It flew w1th great speed Mr V-in Dyke and Walter had Just descended to the llbrary and Walter was askmg h1s father how long It would be before h1s mother 7 9 1 6 A 1 , u y , . 7 n .
