Our educa- tional system would fail hopelessly in its operation without their expert guidance. Who are these men? They are all members of our community, they are interested, pub- lic-spirited citizens who value education, they are elected by the people of Mones- sen and give generously of their time in order to provide the best possible educa- tional opportunities tor the people ot our city. These men form the Monessen School Board. Recently we have become increasingly aware of the fact that education is vitally necessary in the world ot today. Without responsible, competent men guiding our educational system, this country would tall from its position of world leadership. Here in Monessen we have responsible, compe- tent men at the helm of our schools. The ROW 'I-Emil Beck, Alexander Kachmarik, Dr. Joseph J. Pallone. ROW 2-John Lancas, Nicholas Cullen, Louis Manderino, John Kossar. Not shown-Dr. Joseph Dudas. 'Ev 'Nl 1:9 yf people of our city have chosen these men, placing complete faith and confidence in the ability of these men to maintain our schools. Our faith has been well rewarded, our School Directors have clearly demonstrated their abilities. They have striven to uphold and strengthen, extend and broaden our educational standards, taking progressive strides toward better schools for Monessen. Much of the work of the School Board is accomplished behind the scenes and goes unnoticed by the average citizen. Serving on the School Board is certainly not an easy task that requires little of the individual di- rector. The work involved is generally dif- ficult and time-consuming, often the only satisfaction received is that of knowing that the utmost is being done towards educating our people. Undoubtedly these men are worthy of the highest praise We can offer. They are performing an invaluable service for cur city, state, and nation. JOSEPH J. Yours has been a life en- riched with sound education, active parti- cipation in extra-curricular activities, and varied experiences. You got off to a really fine start with the election of your class officers. With inter- ested sponsors and good student leader- ship, your activities were successes, from the Sadie Hawkins Dance, with its humorous theme, to the Prom, which was really a big affair. Highlighting your big year was the Christmas Dance, Mistletoe Magic , the class play, Nuts in May , the May Day, and Class Night, all of which hold cherished memories. Then finally the big moment arrived-the climax of years of striving- graduation. As you leave Monessen High School, your memories will be locked in your hearts and minds, and your Alma Mater will grow dearer to your hearts. Freshmen actively participated in all fields available in the National Forensics League-- oratorical, debate, extemporaneous, humor- ous, and dramatic. The Junior High Glee members can well be pleased with the pre- sentation of their annual operetta. Many fine musicians from our class have contrib- uted much to the improvement of the band and orchestra. The leadership of the Junior High Student Council fell on our shoulders and this duty was accepted with confidence and poise. Many dances, programs, and assemblies were sponsored by the Student Council with these being enjoyed by all. Those serving in this organization worthily filled their po- sitions and proved fine examples for the rest of the student body to follow. Now, as we become sophomores, we are ready to prove our worth to our school and our community by being good students and good citizens. THE BAND Boosting the school morale, from Sep- tember to June, the hallmark ot our Band is: Play! Play! Play. And play they do! From prevalent popular melodies to Beethoven's symphonies, the music ot Monessen High SchooI's Band is invariably entertaining and animating. Prior to the opening ot school, the Band embarked under the competent leadership of Mr. Julius D'AIfonso. Playing at numer- ous civic and athletic functions and exhibit- ing not only its musical aptitude but also an array of thirty-tive high-stepping maiorettes continuously kept the Band on its toes. Ter- minating the year's activities were an- nual concert and the presentation o the coveted gold and silver pins to deserving members. 88 r KY -- 11- L Ag J 2 I ,ig 1 f f. ORCHESTRA 1958-59 was certainly an enterprising season for a vital school institutionfthe Orchestra. Assemblies, the District Orches- tra, the Junior and Senior class dramas, May Day, Class Night, and Commencement exer- cises all beckoned the Orchestra to demon- strate its versatility and to lend added beauty to these events. Then, ot course, the Orchestra had its own concertfa melo- dious blend ot Sonatas, symphonies, and serenades which will long be remembered by local conoisseurs ot music and culture. SENIOR PLAY Opening night at Cornelia Otis Skinner's fashionable New York apartment sets the stage for Nuts in May. Trying desperately to remain calm, Miss Skinner finds herself faced with many ob- stacles. Her son has invited two girls to the opening, and a well known television pro- gram, Face to Face, has chosen this par- ticular day for an interview. Quite certain that Cornelia's son has emotional problems, Isobel makes herself a nuisance, and two ardent fans seek refuge in a closet in the apartment. Wit, charm, plus many humorous scenes add to the delightful presentation of this year's senior play. Lazewski, FOOTBALL The Monessen High School gridders ex- ultantly emerged from a successful l958 scrimmage season-a season successful not in the matter of wins or losses, but in fine sportsmanship, superior cooperation, and superb character-molding ability. Under the experienced guidance ot Coach Armand Niccolai, the Hounds exhibited their best, vvhether they were playing against superior toes or weaker adversaries. As usual, they played a far more commendable game than any score indicates. Opposition against a stubborn Windber eleven officially opened the 1958 pigskin season tor Niccolai's proteges. Although the score doesn't reveal the tact, the locals illus- trated tine blocking, passing, and throwing 110 Spotlights Greyhounds In Shoulder Pads Monessen coaches, Niccolai, Koval, Romasco, and Gladys chart goal line strategy. Bad luck plagued Monessen's grid eleven for the remainder of the '58 football sea- son, as they went on to suffer eight defeats from their nine remaining foes. Persistently the underdog, our Greyhounds were suc- cessful in injecting a real scare into the Charleroi Cougars, our traditional rivals. The Hounds bottled up the vaunted Cougar offense for almost three periods before a no-yardage punt, a disputed first down. and a costly fumble gave the Charleroi eleven their scoring opportunities. The victory over Donora in the final game of the season was a fine farewell present for Coach Armand Niccolai, who officially resigned from the Monessen grid coaching post after more than twelve years of coaching experience. JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL Monessen Junior High School's gridiron eleven exhibited excellent football, offen- sively and defensively, in posting an un- beaten slate of five games this season. It vvas their second consecutive undefeated schedule, extending their winning streak to eight games. Coach Joe Koval, in his first season as Junior High mentor, skillfully guided the squad through a series of one- sided encounters. Beginning with an im- pressive 39-7 victory over Brownsville, the little Greyhounds proceeded to dovvn Do- nora by a score of 25-O, Monongahela 33-6, arch-rival Charleroi 19-6, and finished the highly successful season with a 38-13 romp over Trinity Junior High. After winning four of Their eight exhibi- tion games, The Greyhound cagers copped The Movie Club championship and man- aged to have two of Their senior members, David Paterra and Carl Payne, gain posi- tions on The Movie Tourney All-Star Team. In the first game of the Section 5-A basket- ball season, The Greyhound five coasted to an easy victory over Brownsville, however, the next two games were disastrous for the 'l-lounds, as they suffered humiliating de- feats at the hands of Charleroi and Beth- Joint. Back from these doldrums came the Janosik five to easily win all their eleven remaining games. Finishing the regular sea- son with an ll-2 tie with the Charleroi Cougars the Monessen Greyhounds traveled to the Pitt Field House where they were dubiously defeated by their arch-rivals in the WPIAL playoff. 115 Moncssen's Murin fires a hook shot as Donora's Law vainly attempts to block it. fZ2 FIRST TEAM B. Baseball enthusiasts watched the batting, pitching, and catching know-how displayed in all games, but es- pecially against our oldest rival-Charleroi. This year's team, mainly iuniors, really worked hard to carve their niche in the baseball world, although they are a com- paratively young team. Accredited with this successful season, Coach John Hayduk is confident that the experience received will be sure to give us an even greater team next year TRACK The last lap of the Monessen High School athletic program is taken in stride by the members of the Greyhound track team. The Qavelin, discus, hurdles, and shot put be- came familiar items as the team prepared to compete for its sixth season under coach Clifford Jones. As the season pro- gressed the Hounds demonstrated their abil- ities in the various events of track and field. Running against rugged competition brought about by their usual tough schedule, the Greyhound thinclads gave a good account of themselves as interest in the running sport continued to rise. Port-siclers Stuart Samuels and .lack Cherkin, seniors, and Leonard Tyburski and James Tegnelia, iun- iors, led the team. The netters met stead- fast opposition from other members of the circuit: California, Charleroi, and Mononga- hela High Schools. VGLLEYBALL Vim, vigor, and vitality best describe the 1959 Greyhound volleyball team. Empha- sizing the important factors of the game was Mr. Edward Ratica, to all inexperienced players as well as to the former Hound let- termen. Seniors: Terry Throop, C. L.
