Throughout these pages you will find the respected administrators, the de- voted faculty members, the sophisti- cated seniors, the challenging underclassmen, the splendid athletes and all of the extra-curricular activities. It is to you, the Senior Class of 1965, that we give this Greyhound as a sketch of some of your days at Monessen, with the hope that in future years you may open it to recapture in memory the spirit of the fun and the work you knew, and the friends you made and kept here. f in Y 4 ,1'x:N ,rvl N X m f' if r ,-4 4 'X . f X , Z' - , If K x I W4 X' . f v , 1 , f ' q ' , WA xH f l!! Evans 6 We, the Senior Class of 1965, bid you, Monessen High School, a fond and regretful farewell. The time has come for us to leave and to put into practice what you have taught us through the years. Though our hearts are sad, we take solace in knowing that the years cannot erase events that are now beautiful memories forever sealed within the confines of our hearts. . . . sign-making parties where we used countless bottles of paint and rolls of paper . . . wonderful proms where the world of reality became a world of fantasy . . . enchanting Christmas dances . . . riotous pep- rallies . . . the senior bonfire . . . getting up early on Saturday mornings for N.F.L. tournaments . . . nights at the library working on the research paper . . . rushing to the many club meetings . . . struggling to make our class plays the successes that they were . . . worrying about our post-gradua- tion plans . . . the announcing of the Top 20 . . . the excitement of our class night and commencement .... These memories we shall cherish. They have become part of us as we have become part of you, Monessen High School-as we have become another page in the annals of your illustrious history. Eventually, as the hand of time turns the pages, as our successor's to the rank of Senior move up, we shall find our- selves ioining those classes that have gone before. But in one way, we shall always remain unique, for we, Monessen High School, shall always be the Class of l965. l You may have two cookies today. Pokomo, R. Frye, T. Tweardy, T. Kohul, R. Buchko, E. Kachamarik 48 Wisdom, spirit, dedication-all of these traits have enabled the juniors of the class of '66 to continue along the road of success and to complete another unforgettable year at M.H.S. Having previously elected the of- ficers capable of leading them, James Buggy, president, Bunny Woods, vice- president, Denise Tordy, secretary, and Toni Ann Cocciolone, treasurer, and being sponsored by Mrs. Duane Hicks and Miss Ruth Lowe, the juniors im- mediately set about to accomplish the task facing them: the improvement of self through the improvement of intellect. At no time throughout the year were studies neglected, rather, they were of primary importance to every junior, as evidenced by the number of students attaining academic honors. Not only did the juniors achieve scholastic recognition, they also gained recognition in extra- curricular activities. Besides participating in athletics, juniors were prominent in such activities as NFL, band, glee, and editorial and business staffs. In the autumn the Junior Class Play, The Stuck Pot, was fore- most in everybody's mind. In December the music of both the concert and the dance set the mood for the Christmas holidays. Climaxing their school year was the Junior-Senior prom. By their participation in these activities, the juniors showed themselves capable of working as a group for the benefit of the school. Now, looking back with a smile and looking on with confidence, the Class of '66 approaches its senior year. A sign??? This will get you three points!!! 49 .PYYQ , lr: ,... Salofli 56 Adjusting themselves to the demand- ing first year of high school, the sopho- mores have met head on the challenges of increasing work and responsibilities connected with the senior high school. Numerous appearances onthe honor roll showed that the sophs rated high in scholastics. Even after tackling ad- vanced subiects for the first time, the Class of '67 maintained a high academic record. Energetically, the sophomores partic- ipated in school activities such as the band, the yearbook staffs, the Hound staffs, N.F.L., P.F.T.A. and the Girl Ushers' Club. In athletics, too, the soph- omores have shown their eagerness to carry on the Monessen High School tradition. The leadership and experience obtained from these extra-curricular activities will prove useful throughout their lives. By their active participation in school activities, the members of the Sophomore Class showed true school spirit, and demonstrated this spirit further by participating in panel discus- sions at assemblies, making signs, cheer- ing at pep rallies and games and co- operating in all other endeavors. lt is with pride that the Class of '67 looks forward to the challenges of the future, for they know by their past ac- complishments, that they will meet these future challenges with vigor. And we have jus! begun. 64 lim The class of T968 has strived to attain the reputation of having excelled in academics, athletics, and activities. These energitic and spirited Frosh reached this goal, high as it was, by looking up- ward and by working diligently for success. Freshman class members proved themselves academically by having an excellent representation on the Honor Roll and by taking part in various academic activities such as the Junior High Quiz. They have also proven them- selves as athletes by eagerly participat- ing in various sports such as football, basketball, track, swimming and by taking their places as cheerleaders and maiorettes. As members of the Student Council and Glee Club, many class members sought to develop traits of leadership. Others in the class contributed to their school by participating as active mem- bers of the National Forensic League or Speech Club, Yearbook and Hound staffs and the band. Having completed the first step on the ladder of success, these academically minded students are looking forward to a bigger and better future as part of the Monessen Senior High School where they will continue to take an active part in bringing honor to their school and community. With their great determination, the Freshman will certainly be able to meet the demands which will be placed on them. This group of eager students will continue to make our school a better one in every area. Bad luck-Huh! See, all of the best cooks are men. 65 r .-. . , J . VOCATIONAL ACTIVITIES The Vocational School is designed to offer specialized instruction to boys who are interested in becoming efficient workers in America's industrial world. Alternating between shop and class, the Voc boys received a balanced in- dustrial education, stressing both prac- tical shop work and related classroom work. The boys attended the high school for morning sessions in math, English, and history courses before starting their instruction at the Vocational School in the afternoon. Under the supervision of Mr. Colombo, the boys gained and used knowledge concerning the repair and maintenance of automobile engines and equipment. Mr. Pancook in the machine shop taught the boys to shape metal and to use various machines and tools. Mr. Duronio instructed tomorrow's electri- cians in the workings of electrical op- pliances, in wiring techniques, and in other electrical principals in the elec- tric shop. The education received by these stu- dents will enable them to take their places with the skilled workers in the workshops of this world of industry. After a recovered fumble, Monessen scored on a pass from Joe Nicksich to Bill Hubans. With two minutes left in the first quarter, Gus Cocciolone caught a punt and ran 66 yards for Monessen's second score. An intercepted pass by Nicksich set up the third T.D. for Hubans. The final score was T8-6. At the opening kickoff between Mon- ongahela and Monessen, the hometeam seemed ready to run away with the ball. They took the kickoff and moved to the Wildcat 14 but could not sustain their drive. Monongahela combined passing and running for their tallies. By virtue of this 13-0 loss, the Hounds were elimi- nated from the Class AA race. After receiving the kickoff, it took South Hills a few plays to tally, however Monessen caught on and started to play ball. John Harhai and Gary Caruso combined to make the half-time score 13-7. The third T.D. came when Nicksich hit Denny Frew on a pass play. Ten sec- onds remaining, Nicksich passed to Bob Long making the final score 25-7. lContinued on page 791 FOOTBALL 1964 l g S 0 W Q N , A ,X I .fix Sv K ,Q Q' N as ..- of m . a S - w . Halfway through the third quarter, Mon- essen crossed the goal line for the first time on a pass from Yakovac to Long. By plunging over his right tackle, Coccio- lone scored the other T.D. The game ended T4-6 in favor of Monessen. Fumbles, intercepted passes and bad luck proved to be enough for the Grey- hounds when they played Brownsville. The only Hound score came when Sam Havrilak passed to Long for a TO-yard touchdown. Cocciolone's kick was good, but the Brownies claimed the l2-7 victory. Although the superb speed of Clair- ton proved sufficient in overcoming Mon- essen, not all ofthe efforts ofthe Hounds were unsuccessful, for they did score two touchdowns-one by Hubans and the other by Havrilak. Cocciolone converted both P.A.T.'s making it 28-T4. A series of fumbles on the part of Monessen enabled the Tigers of McKees- port to score six touchdowns. Although they tried valiantly, the Hounds couldn't muster enough strength to score. The game ended 40-0. The first three quarters of the match between arch-rivals Charleroi and Mon- essen proved interesting and hard- fought. The Cougars scored the first T.D. Not to be outdone, Monessen's Hubans also crossed the goal line. From this point it was touch and go with neither team having an advantage. The Cou- gars booted o field goal to lead 9-6. Scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the visitors captured the 29-6 victory. The Greyhounds copped their first Big 6 win when they defeated Donora 27-14. Playing what most fans called llthe best this season, the Hounds man- aged to crash the Dragon defense. Bob Cosner and Harhai crossed the goal line once each while Al Grant tallied twice, Sabol's safety widened the margin and ended the season on a 5-4-O note. There was no definite scoring star, each of the starters was high scorer in at least one game of the campaign. The other members of the squad included, seniors Major Corley, Allen Grant, Ray Lu- brani, .lay Sabol and Howard Paige. The most exciting game of the year was the first meeting with Bellmar High School on the Belle Vernon court. After a morning pep talk which raised every- one's spirits, hundreds of students decided to go to the game and support the Hounds. Almost two-thirds of the fans at the Bellmar gym were from Monessen, and the cheering sparked our team to a thrilling 57-55 victory with Gus Coccio- lone dropping in the deciding bucket with iust 7 seconds left to ploy. Other initial victories came at the ex- pense of Monongahela, Charleroi, Calif- ornia, Rastraver and Donora in section play, while in exhibition the Hounds never lost a home game. They defeated power- ful Derry Area, Clairton, Greensburg and South Hills. But we had a taste of defeat too, at the hands of Uniontown, Bellmar, Johnstown, Homestead, Hempfield and Washington. So the season ended, and students thought, lf only our Greyhounds could play the season over again. But these thoughts followed every win and loss, as Monessen fans thought of their cagers only at their best. Maaffa, T. Hubans, .l. Burby, J. Kunsa, B. Hall 88 track Baseball, volleyball, tennis, track, and golf are five interscholastic sports of spring, the season of the year when there is the most variation in athletics. Soon after basketball season, the track team began its daily work-outs. Under the guidance of Mr. Jack Scarvel, the boys practiced their specialties which included the shotput, iavelin throw, high jump, broad iump, high and low hurdles, sprints and relays. Although weak in some areas, the team was able to add to the Iaurels of M.H.S. Coached by Mr. Anthony Caterino, the M.H.S. spikers prepared themselves for a rough season. Returning lettermen gave the team the experience and depth needed for a successful campaign. At the tournament, the Greyhounds came on strong, showing their facility and determination. Although rebuilding the team this year, Mr. Frederick Feldman, coach of the tennis team, undoubtedly produced a winning combination. Those boys chosen from the many who tried out for the squad helped our team to victory. With four returning lettermen, the Monessen Greyhound baseball team, coached by Mr. Joe Koval, also went through a period of remolding. The tightly knit infield led by veteran seniors proved a valuable asset. An enthusiastic pitching staff and a sharp batting line- up combined to produce an interesting season and a team of which M.H.S. could be proud. As the weather became warmer, the cry of fore was also heard at the Greyhound's home. Initiated last year, the golf team, under this year's sponsor, Mr. John Hayduk, played their matches at Willowbrook Country Club. Although membership in this sport was small at first, it grew and will continue to grow into one of bigger and better sports at Monessen. voHeybaH Tennis Row 7: B. Kerns, J. Harhoi, T. Tweordy, R. Scheduling the yearbook candids, identifying pictures, and writing articles monopolized only a part of the time and energy which went into this publication. Much proofreading and revising had to be done before the '65 Greyhound could go to press. By con- tributing an enthusiastic effort, each mem- ber of the Yearbook Editorial Staff worked to merge the various new ideas that were suggested to make the '65 Greyhound a treasured possession. BUSINESS STAFF With hard work and soliciting skill, the 1965 Yearbook Business Staff has again successfully financed the Grey- hound. This year's staff, under the capa- ble sponsorship of Mr. Thomas Biconich and the efficient business managers, Sylvia Kless, Deanne Oliver and Joan Kubic, diligently carried out the numer- ous duties of their work. To begin with, members of the staff spent much of their time in soliciting ads from business, professional and personal patrons. Then, after getting ads, the staff obtained orders and collected stu- dent payments in the homerooms of the iunior and senior high schools. As this work was going on, many hours were being spent arranging the ad section for the yearbook dummy. Finally, with the distribution of the '65 Greyhound, the work of the business staff ended on a profitable and satisfying note. T965 GREYHOUND Hound Editors: Janis Weiss, Editor-in- Chief, Andrea Kossar, News Editor, Mar- sha Weiss, Feature Editor: Evalyn Kizakevich, Art Editor: and Kathy De- Rocco, Sports Editor. acquired iournalistic skills in editing school paper. Hound Editorial Staff Under the supervision of Miss Diane DeRocco, this year's Editor-in-Chief, Janis Weiss, and editors Andrea Kossar, Marsha Weiss, Kathy DeRocco and Evelyn Kizakevich, along with staff members, made a pleasant change in the schooI's paper, the Hound. Being published with a greater variety of editorials, sport articles and special features, the paper kept the student body fully aware of high school happenings. Because of the never-tiring efforts of the editors and reporters, the Hound was edited eight times. Hound photographers, Jimmy Mitch and John Massa look at football proofs. Getting this support is the responsibility of the Hound Business Staff in our school. They have served us by obtaining personal patrons and advertisements, and by meeting our demands for a six-page issue by selling submarine sand- wiches. The staff has also proven itself capable by working diligently to circulate the paper throughout the school. Managing the staff this year were Ronnie Wilen, Janet Krit- sky, and their sponsor, Mr. Comet. By working as a qualified team, these business-minded students have kept the 'lHound well into the black all year. Hound Managers and Sponsor: Mr. Comet, Janet Kritsky, and Ronnie Wilen go over sales receipts. T96-4 BAND Introducing the Monessen High School Marching Band is the phrase used to introduce an energetic group of students as they march on to public enter- tainment. Under the direction of Mr. Julius D'Alfonso, the band practiced throughout the year. Performing at pep rallies and athletic events, the band inspired much of the school spirit shown by the students. Not limiting its activities to the school, the band also performed for parades and other civic affairs. No matter where the band performed, it was led by fourteen high-stepping maiorettes. In the spring, the band culminated the season by displaying its talents at their annual concert. At this event the members and maiorettes were awarded pins or letters for their fine service. This year the officers were Steve Smoke, president, Richard Pantaleo, vice- president, Beverly Pavloff, secretary, and Matt Raiakovich, treasurer. The maiorettes were led by Lois Greco. Band officers, Bev Pavloff, secretaryg Rich Pantaleo, vice-president: Matt Raiakovich, treasurer, and Steve Smoke, president, gather during half-time at the Charleroi-Monessen basketball game. All was quiet, when suddenly appeared the Senior Class pro- duction of The Ghoul Friend. Taking place at Green Willow Lodge, this three- act mystery comedy by Gene Donovan revolved around Dan Merrick's and his sister Lolly's attempts to save their mother's lodge from financial failure. Their plan was to try to literally scare up business by spreading a rumor about a lake monster. Matter were complicated by Daphne, their superstitious maid who regarded every strange sound as a sign ot a Ghoul . However, Daphne's ideas did not seem so wrong after a mysterious young girl named Marina, whom everyone thought was dead, appeared. Adding to the mystery and hilarity of the play were Dracu- lette, Graveyard Gracie and Big Mama Corpus. The performance was one of which M.H.S. could be proud, the success of which must be attibuted to the superb directing of Mrs. Jean Davies. Daphne. . . Dan Merrick. . Lolly Merrick . . Under the sponsorship of Miss Mary Sta- retz, the girls served their school well by ushering at events held in the school throughout the year. The girls saw that tickets were collected, programs were passed and the best seats possible were provided for the audience. The perform- ance of their duties was marked by effi- ciency and courtesy. Now in its tenth year, the group was led by officers, Janet Kritsky, president: Lora Lee Johns- ton, vice-president, Kimberly Keefer, sec- retary: and Nancy Nahi, treasurer. These girls were responsible for planning the year's ushering at plays, concerts and other school and civic functions. Through the Pennsylvania Future Teachers of America, those interested in teaching were offered an opportunity to explore some of the many aspects of this profession. Organized in 1947, the PFTA is today one of the most popular and energetic clubs at Monessen High School. The girls attended lectures given by experienced teachers, viewed films on the subject of teaching and visited a nearby college. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Davies and officers, Jean Zingaro, president, Louise Behrendt, vice-president: Sally Koslik, publicity secretary, and Lucille Dalfonso, treasurer, the PFTA attained an important goal: to encourage future teachers by acquainting them with their chosen profession. P. F. T. A. BROADCASTING STAFF By efficiently reporting the daily news over the Public Address, the Broad- casting Staff of Monessen High School kept the student body and faculty well informed about school events. Not only did they make announcements in the morning, but they also served at games or at any other event such as Open House where their services were needed. Since members must proficiently operate equipment and deliver the announce- ments, they were chosen on the basis of their pronunciation, tone and vocal quality, accurate judgment and depend- ability. Under the direction of Mrs. Kasper, this staff was fully able to per- torm its duties skillfully. Helping Miss Maatta in her first year as librarian at M.H.S. were student assistants-some hoping to become fu- ture librarians. This group learned the procedures of library operation by doing such tasks as dusting, shelving, repairing, sorting, and circulating books. Also, they arranged and displayed new books or cleverly decorated the library bulletin boards. Finding sources for students who had to give reports or write research themes was a maior duty of the assistants. ln addition, they brought vo- cational pamphlets or magazines from the stacks to any student wishing to do extensive reading to broaden his out- look, wishing to gain a cultural back- ground, or wishing to teach himself to make better use of leisure time. Partici- pating in weekly tournaments, the mem- bers widened their scope of experience and knowledge by visiting numerous schools and by encountering other stu- dents. Most important, the N. F. L. strives to teach its members the funda- mentals for the achievement of leader- ship, citizenship and individualism. Realizing the importance of good public speaking, many students enlisted in the speech class. Starting with the fundamentals of the stage, the students also wrote and delivered their speeches and even practiced social etiquette by acting out telephone conversations and formal introductions. Taking part in the assembly programs, sponsoring dances and parties, and con- ducting various money-making drives were only a few activities which the stu- dent council instituted as part of the cheer program. Some of their service projects in- cluded buying new drapes for the Junior High School office and forming a hall patrol for visitor's night. Arousing school spirit was another of the student counciI's projects and the club was rewarded by record-break- ing attendance at the junior high bas- ketball games. Serving as officers for the '64-'65 school year were Paula Shives, presi- dent, Denise Mori, vice president, Sherry Treater, secretary, Susan Kraynek, treasurer. The key note of junior high school spirit is the energetic Junior High Cheer- leading Squad. This enthusiastic group showed their pep and leadership by sponsoring I'The First Down Dance in the fall and by spurring the junior high with spirit at pep rallies and games. An example of good sportsmanship and fair play was set by the cheerleaders, who made it a habit to practice courtesy toward the opposing team. These girls have earned the reputation of being rich in personality and leadership as well as coordinated and agile in action. Although unsponsored, these girls, led by Susan Kraynek, have sought per- fection in cheer activities earning re- spect for both themselves and the school. Every new school year brings advancements in our educational system. Included among these advancements are the math, language, chemistry, and physics labor- atories. We in Monessen look ahead to a future lighted by the spark of know- ledge which has been ignited by dedic- cated men led by Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Joseph J. Pallone. As the senior high school principal, Mr. Henry Furio exemplifies characteris- tics of the dedicated administrator in his numerous dealings with the faculty, the student body, parents, and the other ad- ministrators. Similarly, Mr. Alfred Hazel- baker, principal of the junior high school, carries out the duties of his posi- tion with competency and devotion. Aided by their efficient secretaries, these three untiring administrators con- front each day the problems of the school district with the thought in their minds that Monessen cannot and will not remain dormant where the future of her youth is concerned. These wise and able men make decisions con- cerning the faculty, students, and school buildings. Through their guidance many new innovations have been in- troduced, making our school a better place in which to learn. Assuming their responsibilities willingly, the members meet regularly to discuss the ways and means necessary to promote improve- ments which are in the best interest of all concerned. These men have dis- tinguished themselves in the field ot education by giving unseltishly of their time and energy in order to provide the students of Monessen with an atmos- phere conducive to good learning. tv' FRED C.
