The lunior Red Cross makes love go round the world? -this is the slogan of the American lunior Red Cross, Our chapter of this national organization has certainly lived up to this slogan, for the Red Cross boxes they sent at Christmas time brought much happiness to children overseas. Desiring to help others less fortunate than themselves, this organization assisted our community in the annual Red Cross drive. ln addition to service the club through its Art Council provides a practical and useful outlet for creative abilities. Many of the paintings which the members sent to the International Art Exhibit in Washington were accepted for shipment overseas These worthwhile proiects undertaken by the council have contributed much to foster the spirit of cooperation and to bring satisfaction to its mem- bers and have taught them the enjoyment that can be received by helping others. The members of the Boy Ushers Club can be seen scurrying about at the many sport events offering their service to the patrons. Not only did these hard working boys serve our school at the sport events, but they also helped make our social life more complete by sponsoring various dances. Our senior ushers received the letter M. which came to them through their sincere work and loyalty to their school, Near the end of the year, the boy ushers, combined with the patrol to hold a party. If you don't believe they mean business, just try walking in the wrong direction when the watchful eyes of Anthony Stupakis, Dave Woodward, Rose Lencio, or any other alert patrolmen are upon you. Law and order do not go out with the morning dismissal, for the junior high students have such dependable patrol members as Lucio DeRocco, Rosalie Whitfield, Evangeline Maskas, and others to rely upon. The loyalty of the patrolmen is not unrewarded, however, for each year at the patrol dance the sponsor, W. Ft. H. Patterson, presents the senior members with school letters. The Skating Club was organized for students who like to get their exercise in an easy way, and also for those who just like to skate. These whizzing, whirling lasses and lads are tar trom being professionals, but they take their bumps and falls like pros and continue to work at things like skating backwards, waltzing or even polkaing on those eight little wooden wheels. As active members of the recreation program the club members travel often to the Riverview Skating Rink, and enjoy themselves immensely Because it has de- veloped a great interest in skating among our students, we believe that our Skating Club is one ot the best of its lcinri, and it i.: a iine example oi the many club.- in our activity program P Sponsor Miss Virginia Fallon oca iona . . . . FOOTBALL 'Lets ceiebrate, were Big 5 Champs , were words which were echoed through the whole town of Mones- sen, after the Greyhounds had edged the Donora Dragons 7-6 in an Armistice Day thriller. Monefzsen in defeating the Dragons had earned their sixth straight win and the title of Big 5 Champs along with it The story behind this championship is one of hard work, and a determined will to win, When Coach Niccolai left for Cambridge Springs, he was accompanied by a group of green football players. Among them were only a few lettermen The fans, as well as the coach, were very doubtful as to the strength of the l95O Greyhounds Alter a week 0' conditioning through strenuous drills, rough tzcrtttt maaes, good food, and plenty of rest the team brokt- camp on Sunday and returned to Manessen Tl,-' outlook for the season was still pretty dim However, after a poor start in defeating Rostrover, and then losing three straight, the Greyhounds hit their stride. They rolled over six straight foes. Tnff high-point of that winning :streak was thc: defeat ol ri strong, undefeated Charleroi eleven by the score of 7-O Eugene Danser, the sparkplug of lvlonezsenfs forward wall, was injurca in this game, and was out ol the lineup lor the rest of the season. The '50 Greyhounds were heavily intured ridden Ends Paul Kacik and ,ohn Amprim were the first to sufter They received collarbone inguries and were lost to the 'Hounds for the remainder of the season Eugene Danser suffered a cracked leg bone, and End George Swade was out with an ankle injury But these tnturies did not dampen Monessenks spirit, With Masct, Beeman, Vigza and Barrtgfao lugging the ball, and Lea, Zubic, Loprerati, Galvan, Hill, Fletza and Zel- aznowxaki runnind interference, the Greylialirifix romp'-d on to win the Big 5 Championship The Ntccolaimen scored only l2O points against 63 for the opposition but these points came when they were needed. The l950 football season will always be tagged as the season with the storybook ending. wtlwll ....
