1849 - 1949 We are the forty-niners -the namesakes of those cen- tennial forefathers who lived dangerously and fully, spending lifetimes turning up virgin land and making and staking fortunes. Theirs was an unrestrained and lawless way - full of the zest for chance and conquest. But times have changed. One century has seen the gangling, awkward giant that was the United States fill out its 48 states and emerge as a world-respected power. One civil war and two world wars have sobered and awakened us into a social consciousness. For us there are no more unsettled lands to claim--no wide open spaces for squatting or staking claims. Our nation has shrunk-truly the world has shrunk, so that today any uu- restrained thoughts about independence must be tempered with the realization that our rights begin where the other person's leave off, and that no one's liberty can be secure when another's is denied. But like our 1849 forefathers we too are blessed with the spirit of adventure. Perhaps we are fortunate to be living in an age which challenges us into conquering, not lands- but ignorance and fearg and in acquiring, not land and ma- terial claims, but those inestimable treasures-world security and understanding and peace. The high school life captured on the pages of our Greyhound is not an end but a beginning of a new and greater life for us. Ours will be a better tomorrow. 5
