The Academic Decathlon, a national organization dedicated to academic excellence, begins its preparations early in the school year. A participating school, no matter its size, may have only one team of nine members, three each with A, B, and C averages. All schools and all team members take the same level of examinations, one each in economics, fine arts, language arts, history, mathematics, and science. The emphasis this year was on the Renaissance and Reformation Periods. The three highest scoring teams in each CESA District at the Preliminary Competition advance to the Regional Contest where, in addition to six more academic tests, every team member gives a four-minute and an extemporaneous speech, is interviewed, and writes an essay. The final or State Contest determines the one school in Wisconsin which will represent our state on the National level in June. The purpose of Badger Boys’ and Girls’ State is to promote an interest in the principles of Democratic Government, to provide training in citizenship; and to share the duties, privileges, and responsibilities of active participation in the government. The week long program is based on the study of state, county, and municipal systems of government, including the function of political parties. Front Row: L. to R.: M. Brugger, M. Jackson, D. Cohan musical adapted by June Walker Rogers. The play is about a High School Drama Club that cannot decide on a class play until Jason — the student director — falls, hits his head, and dreams of the perfect play. As the play unfolds, Jason’s classmates become the characters. Old Mr. Castleton, a millionaire, has died; and his nephew, Tom Bennett — being the only living relative — has taken over the Castleton mansion, assuming the mansion and millions are his since there is no will to be found. Mrs. Dean and her daughter, Flora (Tom’s fiancee), and a slick con man, Joe Cronin, along with others are naturally lured toward the Castleton millions only to cause trouble. Finally Kid discovers a will which changes the future and fortunes of several people including the lovely maid, Mary. The senior play was a big success and we would like to give a special thank-you” to Mrs. Everson, Mrs. McFadyen, Mr. Miller, and all the others for making it all possible!!
