BUFFS MIDDLE BORDER CHAMPS FIFTH IN STATE The 1978 Mondovi High School Football Team dominated the Middle Border Conference. The Buffs compiled a record of 8 wins and 1 loss, outscoring opponents 243 to 77. Coach Rose’s squad led the Conference in team rushing (1,908 yards and 7.8 yards per carry), in passing (9867 yards) and in total offense (an average of 396.4 yards). Jess Cole, John Hurtley, and Tim Krum-rie, held 3 of the top 4 spots in individual scoring. The Mondovi defense was devastating. Highlighting conference action were two wins over Hudson and two wins over Durand. Mondovi has now beaten Durand five times and Hudson three times in a row. Coach Madsen stated, Our success is due to our overall athletic ability. We have a lot of good athletes and everybody on the team is capable of scoring. We received good student body backing.” Captain Mike Pfund averaged 13 rebounds a game. Bogstad. e r s The Varsity Cheerleaders attended a one week summer camp at Golden Eagle in Appleton, WI. The squad learned new cheers, chants, and pom pon routines. The MHS cheerleaders were busy cheering our teams on to victories. They presented skits on Homecoming Day, led pep rallies, and performed pom pon routines. The Forensics Team competed in meets throughout the area. Members participated in the following categories: Prose reading, Poetry reading, Story telling, Demonstration, 4-minute speech, 8-minute speech, Memorized declamation, Extemporaneous speech, Play acting, Reader’s theatre, Public address, and Significant speech. At the meets each contestant gave his presentation three times. The judges selected the highest scoring participants who advanced to the final round. Winners were awarded certificates, ribbons, and trophies. Not everyone reached the final round but all agree that forensics is a challenging, rewarding experience. And even more precious were the few short hours of the Prom itself. Decorated in a shower of soft spring pastel colors, the gym was transformed into a magical, mystical place. King Ed and Queen Sheri led the Grand March to the music of “Precious and Few”. All too soon the wonderful evening came to an end, but it is one that will long remain a cherished memory. Window painting, float building, practicing for skits, thinking up costumes to wear — these reached a peak on the day of Homecoming. Monday was Jersey, Hat, and Sneaker Day, followed by Hush Hush Day on Tuesday. Pajama Day on Wednesday, and Inside-out Day on Thursday. Thursday night there was a pep rally in the gym at which our senior football players spoke a few words about the game. Then our Homecoming King and Queen, Steve Mahlum and Chris House, were crowned! At last the big day arrived — Friday. Blue and White Day. Homecoming Day. An afternoon pep rally with skits, cheering and loads of spirit got everyone psyched up for the big game. Competition ran strong in the skit, float, and window contests. The pom pon girls won first on their skit with the seniors pulling a close second. The float winners were the sophomores with the seniors again second. The window, however, was the deciding factor for the best show of spirit. The Seniors placed first with their window and won the Spirit Jug!!! Finally, the night the week had been building up to! Our Buffalo team played a fantastic game against the Amery Blackhawks. clocking up 41 points against Amer-y’s 20 Mondovi gained 368 yards on 35 carries for an average of 9.6 yards per carry. John Hurtley led the attack, rushing for 182 yards with an average of 10.2 yards per earn . Tim Krumrie gained 182 yards in five carries, and Jess Cole gained 89 yards on seven carries, also completing five of ten passes for 74 yards. After the game, the place to be was the Homecoming Dance, sponsored by the Student Council, with the band. “First Impression. The theme was Looks Like We Made It. and the gym was beautifully decorated in blue and white by G.A.A. It was the perfect conclusion to the exciting, fun-filled week of Homecoming 1978.
