The most important activity each year is Homecoming Week which is completely organized and run by the Council. The Council is also responsible for selecting lyceums, discussing problems or possible improvements brought up by fellow students, decorating trees for Christmas, and conducting the eighth grade orientation program in the spring. Members traditionally end the school year with a picnic, where new officers for the following year are elected. OFFICERS: L. to R.: Pres. - Lisa Bauer, V. (then why do we still seem so young??) The unforgettable Class of '77 will graduate in only a very short time, but while we're still here, one might like to reflect upon the memories of what being a Senior has been like: Senior pictures - the taking, the making, and the giving, - that first day of school, asking yourself, Where are all those upperclassmen that used to roam these halls with me? - not being able to recognize half the younger students anymore, - thinking, This will be the LAST time we ever . . - learning when to laugh and when not to in Mr. Landry’s class, - 1974 and 1976 Homecoming Spirit Jug Winners (even though our skits never did get us anywhere.) - the hassling but happy Senior Class Play, Mini-Play, and Mini-Movie - selecting graduation announcements and gowns, - deciding your plans for the future - thinking high school would never end and now wishing there would be more time left, - preparing your unforgettable term paper for Mrs. Everson, - appreciating your classmates a little bit more than usual, - Pomp and Circumstance,” - hearing your name called for the last time as a student of MHS, as you make that final walk to the podium to receive your long-awaited diploma. Sandwiched between a soon-to-depart senior class and two younger classes, a junior finds himself herself almost stuck in the middle. Although there is still a full year of school ahead, time continues to creep along, making important decisions about your future after high school more and more prominent. For the time being though, a junior year usually includes: selling magazines to make enough money for paying past debts and looking forward to future debts - giving the seniors fierce competition when it comes to who will win the Spirit Jug - listening to the philosophical teachings of Mr. Peterson -planning the once-in-a-lifetime Junior Prom which takes forever Mary Bauer David Baumann Terri Baumgart Carol Becker Jerry Becker to come and only moments to pass away. Distasteful as high school can be at times, enjoy these last years while you can. Before you know it, you will be following in the steps of past seniors, receiving your own passport to the future. No longer the youngest group occupying the halls of MHS, the sophomores have become accustomed to the daily routine of the school day. Being a sophomore one might remember: Mr. Larson's biology class - selecting a class ring you'll have to like for a long time to come - taking Driver's Ed., learning to drive with Mr. Parker -writing journals for Mr. Steger - working out problems on the class float for Homecoming, joined by the skit and window - sitting through Mr. Brugger's typing class with the echo of ’’TIME! ringing in your ears. Your sophomore year is one of ups and downs. There are times when you can depend on upperclassmen, yet there are also times when you begin experiencing the feeling of responsibility and leadership. Being a freshman opens up a new world of firsts. After being a dominating class of eighth graders in Junior High School, the following fall you find yourself only a young freshman in a new atmosphere, surrounded by older upperclassmen. Reviewing memories of a freshman class school year, you may have remembered the first day of school - finding yourself in the wrong room at the right time, or the right room at the wrong time - strange looks from upperclassmen sizing up you and your classmates as you adjusted to the high school schedule - learning what quiet means in Mr. Landry's study hall - marching in the band, practicing for both parades (LEFT, right, LEFT, right) and Homecoming (a pinwheel?) - working hard on your first Homecoming float, window and skit, not quite sure what you're doing -watching a fellow classmate quarterback the varsity football team to a Middle Border Conference Championship - thinking high school would never end. But believe it or not, the years of high school will pass as quickly as paging through your first yearbook. Rosters were comprised of many returning players from the previous year, joined by incoming freshmen, and ambitious upperclassmen. Many times competition was hard, resulting in losses, but there were also victories posted by the end of the season. Besides working to improve their ability and knowledge in their respective sports, athletes learned a lot from and about each other, making spring another worthwhile season of sports. 1976 FOOTBALL VARSITY WE OPPONENT 13 7 Arcadia 28 39 O-Fairchild 34 16 Hudson 38 7 N-Richmond 19 7 Bald-Wood 15 14 R-Falls 38 0 Prescott 15 7 Durand 29 7 Ellsworth Play-offs s 12 26 Plymouth B” TEAM WE OPPONENT 14 0 Arcadia 0 8 R-Falls 3 12 Ellsworth 0 20 Bald-Wood 0 14 Durand 8 0 N-Richmond 0 28 Chip-Falls 6 0 Memorial FRESHMEN WE OPPONENT 14 0 Bald-Wood 6 20 Arcadia 8 34 Durand 0 20 Ellsworth 14 6 O-Fairchild Page 50 Football SITTING. When teams were first organized almost everyone hoped for, at best, a .500 season. After the Osseo-Fair-child game, these convictions grew stronger. But something changed after the defeat that night. The Buffs grew stronger with each game played and continued to win. The team's hardest challenge came on the night they battled RF, where sole possession of 1st place in the MB Conference was at stake. The Buffs came out on top 15-14, providing perhaps the most exciting game Mondovi has seen in years. Following that hurdle the only possibility of a threat left was age-old rival Durand. However, the Buffaloes dominated that game and finished victorious 15-7. Finishing off the season by defeating Ellsworth HC night, the Buffs accomplished an undefeated conference season and earned a MB Conference Championship - the first since 1964. Play did not end there, for Mondovi qualified for a berth in WIAA's 1st State Football Play-offs - an honor which will proudly be remembered by many. Traveling to Marshfield, the Buffaloes played a hard game and lost 26-12 to the Plymouth Panthers, who later went on to win the Class B State Championship. Without a doubt, this fantastic season could not have existed without the hard work on the parts of many. Reviewing the season, there will surely always be great memories of a great season well-played. Spirits were enhanced after the Buffaloes’ memorable performance in tournament action last spring where Mondovi advanced to sectional competition at Spooner - first losing to Chetek and then finishing off the season with an unforgettable game against Amery. This year's squad found tough competition in a closely-matched conference schedule. Exciting play, close games, overtimes, and ups and downs constituted the Buffs’ outcome. The team, led by seniors Mary Harrison, Lisa Bauer, and Roxi Holstein who have played varsity positions for four years, dominated the Middle Border Conference. The girls took an overwhelming victory at sub-sectionals and placed second at sectionals, qualifying themselves for the state tournament. Meeting tough competition at state, the girls lost in the beginning rounds of play. But reviewing the entire season of accomplishments, the team joined by Coach Hagen, could only have happy and proud memories of a job well done. The volleyball squad had a very memorable season. With an experienced returning varsity, the roonies posted a first place conference position going into quadrangulars at the end of the season. In tournament competition the team bypassed sub-regionals and went on to a Class B Regional Championship. Although the roonies were eliminated at sectional competition, their commendable record added to the great season of sports at MHS. At the beginning of the season we had hoped to challenge New Richmond, conference champion, for that title. Rather than reaching that goal, however, we had to settle for a tie for second place. Although winning has been our chief goal, we have been aware that there are other lessons to be learned during a long season. I hope that the rewards of learning to win and lose, the fellowship, the overcoming of adversities, and the opportunity to know thyself have made the year worthwhile. After last spring's commendable performance at state competition where Mondovi ranked approximately 3rd in the state in regard to the number of A's recorded per school, this year's forensics team hopes to do equally well. This year marks Mondovi’s first year as an official member of the National Forensics League, and based on total number of speaker points earned during the year, a speaker could be eligible for national competition. The forensics program consists of eleven categories: prose, poetry, declamation, story-telling, play-acting, original oratory, four minute speech, significant speech, public address, demonstration speaking, and extemporaneous speech. Work began in the fall selecting categories, considering topics and concluded in the spring with state competition. Speakers attended numerous invitational contests before official contests began. A lot of time was involved on the part of students and especially coaches, but the rewards of public speaking, making new friends, and having a good time were numerous. Honor S Honor Society consists of students who have maintained at least an 8.00 grade point average and have displayed qualities of service, leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. Advisor - Mr. Brugger Oh, come on ideas - start popping in my head Picture-taking day involves a lot of patient rearranging of the times schedule. You may have often wondered (or perhaps you haven't) what goes on in the busy life of a yearbook editor and her able assistants as they trudge through the halls of MHS collecting bits and pieces of student life and finally creating a conglommeration of information, commonly called a yearbook. Or perhaps you have simply taken this book for granted - every spring, year after year, the same book, only the faces have changed. Well, we felt we were due for a big change, and you guessed it - we did it. And believe us, it wasn't easy. No matter how much detail the staff went into about the making of this Mirror, only if you worked with us, could you understand what goes into the production of a yearbook. The printed pages fail to show the optimistic ideas, the endless worries, the occasional mischievous smiles, the patient hassle of picture-taking, the approaching deadlines, and perhaps most consuming - the precious time that goes into each and every page. The staff isn't asking for much - this book is our job and responsibility: we only ask that you enjoy each page and gather memories from this book, not only just for the present, but also for the future years to come. Madeline Bridges There is a great possibility that one day each of us will sit down and ask, Where has the year gone? Looking back over the year, one might be reminded of a song that once said, ... we may never pass this way again . . . Indeed, no matter how detailed one could be in recreating something from the past, that reality can only belong to our yesterdays as just a memory. Will we remember the bells that made us move almost instinctively to our next classes, the lunch hours that never seemed to last long enough to enjoy, selecting sophomore class rings, the great football season - shivering in the brisk weather while standing or sitting on the accomodating bleachers, the junior class rage over cooning watermelons, long bus rides to games, matches, and meets, Homecoming’s frosty festivities - the planning, the hoping, and the accomplishing, the suffocating lunch lines where sometimes you weren't sure whether your feet were touching or not, senior play practice, the freezing winter temperatures when you thought for sure you would freeze either walking to or from school or trying to get your car started, the continuous sufferings from a strange condition known as a broken heart, snowmobiling with friends, going out for pizza after a game, spending time at J’s, the CB rage, cramming for tests, high school crushes, cruising the gut,' ’ lounging in the library chairs, getting your driver's license, prom planning committee meetings, exchanging important confidences, going out with friends, reading Buffalo Billboards, hoping to go to the Junior Prom, would you sign my yearbook?? , and finally graduation . . . Even if we were ever tempted to go back over the year and do it all again, would it or could it ever be the same? Summary — Page 93 A special moment can come at anytime, any place. You and those around you are the ones who make them happen. What Makes a Moment Is it reaching a long-awaited Does it have anything to do with changing a dream into rea Or is it knowing something can never take place again? No matter how hard the work. . . There was always room for a smile. Ambitious juniors, joined by an ambitious advisor, of the Class of '77 began working early last Spring on what would turn out to be one of the most memorable Junior Proms MHS has seen in the past few years. Digging into their imaginations, committee members came up with a splendid combination of greenery, Roman columns and a rainbowed ceiling of orange, blue, pink, green, and yellow. The sparkling fountain, centered in the transformed gym, reflected the many changing colors of its surroundings. A light pink pathway led up to the court where a King and Queen would soon be crowned. Goals to finish the setting were high, but all were reached by dance time on that showery Saturday night. They worked hard designing, planning and decorating in the hopes they could make the 1976 Jr. Prom a success. . . and they did Junior Prom — Page 97 'KJ[ Trr e On May 15, 1976 amidst a pastel shower of orange, blue, green, pink, and yellow, the Class of '77 presented the 1976 Junior Prom, A Time Meant for Us, from the theme song, Pieces of April. Music was provided by Hotcakes. Following the dance were activities at the Valley Supper Club and breakfast was served at the Corral. Through the endless planning, finishing touches, and drizzling rain, one could truly say it was, A Time Meant for Us. Freezing weather accompanied ambitious workers who prepared windows and floats for the week. A roaring bonfire was held Tuesday night where King Randy and Queen Gail were crowned. A snake dance followed coronation. Friday a pep rally and skits were held in the small gym, and a parade was held afterwards. Seniors were awarded the Spirit Jug that evening, and by the end of the game the Buffs were also awarded something - a Middle Border Championship. Senior Class Play — Page 107 Happiness is finding a pencil, pizza with sausage and telling the time . . . And if it is also putting on a good class play, then the class of '77 had the right to be deliriously happy, for their’s was everything a good play should be. For the first time in recent memory the Mondovi community was treated to not just a play . . . but a musical. You're A Good Man, Charlie Prown” chronicles a day in the life of Charlie Brown. Theatre goers were treated to the reflective philosophy of Linus, nicely offset by Patty's perplexed view of,life. And as Schroeder spurned the advances of queenly Lucy, she in turn consistently reminded Charlie Brown of his inadequacies. All this while Snoopy was around to remind everyone of their own unfulfilled fantasies. Put them all together and you get pure delight . . . entertainment at its best. In addition to Charlie Brown, the seniors presented their own slightly revised version of the Mickey Mouse Club. Mondovi Mouseketeers proudly gave us bugger eating morons, the infamous Mondovi Belchers, Sebastian and Dexter, the Bunny Girl, yummy Fig Newtons, and much talked about but seldom seen senior movie. When it was all over there was a lot of Happiness, but also a little sadness. They won't be onstage again as seniors, but while they were they certainly weren't enigmas. r HAPPINESS :, telling fi pmess is Happiness is finding a pencil, pizza with sausage, telling the time . . . happ s eaming to whistle, tying your shoe for the very first time .1. . happiness is playing the drum in your own school band, and happiness is walking hand in hand . . . happiness is two kinds of ice cream, knowing a secret, climbing a tree . . . happiness is five . . . happinesses singing togethei when day is through, and happiness is those who sing with you . . . happiness is morning and evening, daytime and nighttime top.
