I Principal Superintendent Mr. John P. Herpst Schoolboard ROW 1: Mr. Ecke, Mr. Blum, Mr. Giese ROW 2: Mr. Rieck, Mr. Heike, Mr. Morey, Mr. Moy Our modern “credential society” shows a tendency to base occupational opportunity upon diplomas, licenses, and certificates and to use the higher educational system as a screening device to cull rather than cultivate youth according to their educational needs and potential. If this is true, and I believe it is, then every one of you must live by one of President Kennedy’s most famous statements; “Things don’t happen, they are made to happen.” So, if you are really going to find a satisfactory niche in this modern world of today and tomorrow, you must make things happen for you. Mr. W. H. Hehli Today, good citizenship is more important than everbe-, fore, because our country has had to assume the leadership among the free nations of the world. Questions of international policy as well as great national decisions must be the concern of today’s citizens. The future of the United States and the free world hinges on the resources of wisdom we in education develop in our young people of today. Emphasis is placed on how to think” — not What to think.” You are given the opportunity to do group planning and to make group decisions; experience in accepting and carry ingout responsibility at school, in the family and in the community. The strength of a nation involves more than its armaments. It includes citizens who know the meaning of democracy and who are willing to preserve and strengthen it at all costs. Will you be one of these?
