LENUS THORSTAD o r o r hi in in iii m hi in m in ii 2 To those who thumb the pages of this book: As the world moves on, so must the mind of the individual. Each movement of life should be a stepping stone to a future of success. As each brick of our new school is laid, there forms not only a building, but also the foundation for educated, informed, intelligent, and socially accepted people. It is our hope that the building blocks of life and the steps of the future will always lead upward for the students, faculty, and administration of Mondovi High School. As you view the pages of this annual, may they ever remind you of your present and future responsibilities as a citizen in our so- ciety. Dear Mr. Anderson, The 1963 MIRROR staff wishes to dedicate this edition of the MIRROR to you, our football coach, for your outstanding leadership and guidance in the field of athletics. May your continued guidance ever fill the halls of M. H. S. and your leadership never cease to produce championship football teams and athletes. Sincerely yours, The 1963 Mirror Staff Contents u Administration Faculty Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Organizations Athletics Activities MR. WILLIAM HEHLI SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE A high school’s primary concern lies in its students, and the foundation for their future is constructed of books as well as cement blocks. Mondovi High School has grown upward and outward by raising its standards of scholastic achievement and adding to its physical plant. It isappropriate that the 1963 Mirror has taken Building as its theme. While recent years have witnessed considerable physical expansion, Mondovi High School has since its beginning, inspired young people to great educational attainment. The success or failure of a building program depends on the students it serves - you are its product and reason for its existence. What you are, what you do, and what you are in the end, justifies the building and forms the basis for its reputation. Mondovi High School is proud of the record of the students who have graduated and believes that the quality of education it offers will rest secure in the present student body and the 1963 graduating class - that its goals will continue to be your goals. Administration PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE As a famous general once said: The battle is won the day before. In the battles of life, too, victory depends on the quality of our preparation. Are you going to be prepared? If you are, you must give attention to scholarship. Your beginning could take the form of a single, but noble minded purpose such as the desire to know everything. Your goal might be, now I know, or better, now I understand. A realization needed is that more people die of hardening of the categories than ever die of hardening of the arteries. Next we should consider our attitude toward work. Challenge should not be a frightening word to the scholar. In finding answers, we are approaching the real function of education, that of preparing us to intelligently frame questions. You must face the challenge with persistence, perseverance, and the willingness to face failure. Remember, that a second-rater is not one who tried to be first-rate and failed, but one who tried to be second-rate and succeeded. The scholar realizes that it is impossible to be bored with his lot. Because to him, life is pure adventure shared with adventures. 6 MR. JOHN HERPST MARIE DANZINGER: Secretary - Mondovi School System; Minnesota School of Business. In conference play, Mondovi had an overall record of 8 wins and 2 losses forcing us to bow to Chippewa Falls and settle for second place. The B team, under the coaching of Mr. Heit, also had a high record of wins. These boys will help to form a top-notch team for the Buffs in future seasons. Wrestling Wrestling, a year old sport in our school, is now beginning to be truly appreciated. Throughout the season, spectators multiplied at every match. This year, due to numerous injuries, the matmen pulled through with a 0-10 record. However, some fine wrestling was displayed at the regional tournament where Dennis Brion placed second. The team maintained a conference record of 8-2. The over-all record was 9-3, with one win and one loss in tournament play. Returning lettermen are Terry Brenner, Rich Brion, Chuck Deutscher, Mike Fedie, Keith Holden, Dave Linse, Bob Serum, and Roy Tanner. Managers are Bill Hart and Perry Nyseth. This came as a result of terrific teamwork, good sportsmanship, excellent coaching, and school spirit. Our football boys fought their way to a Valley Conference Championship, a tribute, indeed, to our terrific team and their wonderful coach, Mr. Anderson. This year, in basketball, the Buffs placed second in the Mississippi Valley Conference bowing only twice in conference play, to Chippewa Falls. They also did well in tournament play winning the regional and sub-regional championship and going on to more competitive play. Wrestling, a new sport at MHS, suffered from inexperience and injury. Despite a poor record, the matmen are keeping their hopes up for a better season next year. The 1962 track and baseball teams also brought home their share of victories. The baseball team was the winner of the 1962 Mississippi Valley Conference Championship. The important thing to remember is that your cheers give a team, whether winning or losing, the incentive to play the best game they know how in any sport. L. to R.: E. Pabst, R. Serum, G. Nyre, W. With Black River Falls chosen a sthe theme for the October 12 game, the enthusiasm was up and running. It never slowed through the skit nite festivities when the sophomore skit won first place, and the senior class queen candidate, Bev Rosenthal, was crowned Queen. Enthusiasm was still going strong at the dance over which Queen Bev and her escort Rich Brion reigned, ably attended by Joyce Endle and Larry Fedie, Candy Kramschuster and Dennis Brion, Joan Forthun and Ron Hagen, and Terry Wright and Don Crawford. Only when the last strains of Carl Buchholz's Orchestra sounded, did the enthusiasm slip into the cool October night. c erf 79 AT RIGHT: Queen Kathy and King Bob were crowned by last year's royalty, Mary Thors on and Roger Duncanson.
