These programs consisted of several interesting speakers, as well as picture shows, pep meetings, question bees, and recreational hours. The issuing of contracts for concessions to the various organizations of the school was continued. This method proves quite satisfactory in helping to divide the activities among the classes and the other groups. At all times the Council attempts to better within the school certain conditions that need improvement and hopes that it will be successful in this aim. M.H.S. BANDS , I w Q ' ' BAND S HOOA The band increased this year in instrumentation as well as in the membership. A sousaphone and a glockenspiel were purchased with the proceeds from the various activities that were sponsored. , A concert was given in honor of the Band Mothers on Feb- ruary 8. At this performance there were a clarinet quartette and a trumpet duet, as well as the band numbers. The drum majors appeared in their new uniforms. The Band took part in the Spring Music Festival which was given on March 21. A larger number of our members appeared in the mass band at the County Music Festival than ever before. Football returned to our athletic program in the form of Six-man. Eighteen answered the first call for practice and began the task of learning new fundamentals. The boys, inexperienced at the game, accomplished much in their first season. Costly injuries just as the team was functioning best contributed much to the winning of but one game in seven played. Boys returning from the 1940 squad, along with other enthusiasts of the game, should provide adequate material for a successful l94l varsity. 39--Monclova 37 36--Monclova 19 13--Monclova 26 Waterville 27--Monclova l3 Waterville Petersburg 14--Monclova 6 Bloomdale Bradner 24--Monclova 6 Bradner Luckey 26--Monclova 6 -.E . The 1940-1941 basketball season closed with both squads losing in the first round of the county tourney held in the Maumee High gym. Our teams experienced a discouraging season as far as winning and losing games is concerned, but there were many bright spots to offer encouragement and spirit to carry through the long season under such conditions. The Reserve Squad did a fine piece of work and followed two losing streaks with welL-earned victories. The Varsity functioned best at Weston,Metamora, and Waterville. An over- time game with Haskins and parts of games at Haskins, White- house, and Grand Rapids furnished other accomplishments. Link,Don,Howard, and Ed have completed their high school competition and have done all in their power to keep our school on top and to be the best in sportsmanlike conduct. This year they were able to win three of the nine games. Some of these games were lost by three or four points.Raymond Macknek was the leading scorer. This team was eliminated from the tournament when it lost to U Country Day 22-17. With a little more experience and train- ing these boys will be a threat to highschool teams in later years. The 1940 baseball schedule was cut short because of in- clement weather. Fourteen games were arranged and the boys looked forward to a good season only to have seven of the games cancelled on account of rain or wet grounds. Our team was unable to prepare properly for the county tournament held at Whitehouse and were not ready for Holland who defeated them in the opening game. This was the first time in some years that they failed to win or to go to the finals. The boys missed the Defiance trip and will be point- ing for it in l9Ll. The Mammaagame at Maumee found this team doing its best work. E. Kuhn held the Maumee batters to six scattered hits while Monclova's boys collected eleven hits to win 6-2. E.McVicker's catching indicated what can be expected for l9l.l. The loss of A. Parker, W. Dey, and R. Behrens will put quite a hole in the middle of the defense. It is fortunate to have coming up some promising material which will go far when these above vacancies are to be filled.
