We gaze in admiration Upon the work we've done. The courses we have taken, The stiff exams we passed Would indicate intelligence With wonder we're aghast. The faculty, they tell us, Are equally surprised, For when they found us passing They scarce believed their eyes. Perhaps it was their wisdom That dragged us up to grade, And so we're saying, nThank you,n For good advice and aid. How often we have counted The time till holidays, And wished the hours were shorter In education's ways! But now we may discover What old folks say is true: L1fe's working day is lengthy, And holidays are few. Still armed with high endeavor We'll meet fate with a smile And strive with heart undaunted, Remembering the while That life, despite misfortune, Is but adventure gay, And Death's a friend that gives us A last long holiday. WE THANK YOU The pmblicationof this annual has been made possible by the cooperation and collaboration of the members of the staff. It has meant hard work and planning. when'we think of the joy it will bring our fellow students we feel richly BWBTQBG for the effort nut forth into the making of this volume. In this manner, we, the staff, thank our readers for the hearty receptkm accorded this book. In the contents you will find the infinite ideals and creations of the composers. To the other students and teachers who have given their aid in the pre- paration of this annual we inscribe this paragraph. Their cooperation has meant much to us and we owe them our sincere appreciation. We have enjoyed making this bookg we trust you will enjoy perusing it. We sent teams to the contest held at Sylvania, Shorthand I and Short- hand II Typing I and Typing II, and Bookkeeping. We also received our share of awards from typewriting companies. F Q- 'H MUXUSDUIU The High School Glee-Club The High School Glee Club has a membership of twenty-four girls who en- roll for the entire year and receive one quarter credit. One of the purposes of this organization is to acquaint the group with songs unfamiliar to them. Throughout the year the glee club has several op- portunities to participate in the social activities of the school. We well remember the carollng at Christmas and the selection at Commencement time. Besides learning various songs for the development of their repertoire, a majority of the girls has learned to appreciate good music and to enjoy the lovely effects that the blending of girls' voices produces. The Junior High Glee Club Q The girls of the Junior High School including the seventh and eighth grades, have an opportunity of organizing a glee club of their own. Its mem- bership of twenty-six has been large enough tc accomplish the learning of various two-part songs with an excellent balance of voices. Although this glee club has not been active this year it has gained a great deal from the weekly hour and a half period. HOM ECONOMICS Home Economics classes have been very busy this year. The first semes- ter we made many dishes -- cakes, pies. soups etc. We cooked and served breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Our services were required for a pub lic speaking class banquet and for the Pancake Supper! These gave us practical experience. We sewed the second semester, making blouses, pajamss, dresses, and smocks. They were nicely done. Posters were made representing different kinds of materials. Excellent results were obtained. The Home Ecers feel that they have spent a profitable and enjoyable year under the instruction and supervision of Mrs. Van Gundy. WW lFh'FTN'f 7 FF 'V'F?YF'EFY?'Y .' . A . A 'BWV : REQUIRED COURSES Along with other school activities, there are three courses of study that are commonly required, these being mathematics, English, andjaistory. Some students wonder why these studies should be required any more than some others that they might like better. Here is the reason: Everyone knows that a good house cannot be built upon a poor foundation or upon no foundation at all. The same principle holds true here, we cannot build a good education if we do not first take care to form a firm foundation through the aid of these fundamental studies. For how much could we do if we did not know at least the simple mathematical figuresg how far could we hope to go if we could not express our thoughts, ideas, and ideals in our own lan- guageg and what progress could we make if we could not study the faults and mistakes of other people in the past, and thus profit by them. The answer ls evident. AGRICULTURE Mr, Sanford directs the Agriculture Class composed of fourteen Junior and Senior boys. Our literature is received from the U. S. Department of Agricul- ture and Ohio State University. We have on file in the office available bulle- tins which may be used for references and for study. This library may be of considerable value in the near future to the patrons of this school who may care to use these bulletins. A INDUSTRIAL ARTS Our second year in the new Industrial Shop found two large classes regis- teringg and advanced class for Juniors and Seniors and a beginning class for Freshmen and Sophomores. The beginning class numbered 24 students which is more than we can rightfully accommodate at the present. In the future we hope to enlarge the shop taking in more space just east of the room now used. A few new tools were purchased along with a new 24N jig saw and a promise of other power tools to come when funds are available. Many projects for the home were made during the year. The lathes and d er power tools were ln constant use and useful projects turned out. We have rearranged the shop by placing the tools on a panel in the shop in- stead of in the cupboards as before. This improved the appearance of the shop. The old tool room is used as a stock room for lumber and projects. If possible we want to install new benches next year and a few metal working tools and ma- chines. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT ZOOLOGY. Zoology ls a new course this year. It has been conducted as much as possible from the standpoint of individual work. Last fall the group spent most of the first month in the field, and succeeded in making a collec- tion adequate for all laboratory requirements this year. This use of animal life from our own co munity has made the course of much greater value. Two of the group, working on N.Y.A. also have specialized ln museum preparations, and have added much in the way of study material.' We look forward to succeeding years, when studies of animal life in Monclova township will become more and more complete. BIOLOGY. The Biology class has been making great progress this year. A fine leaf collection has been made and added to the school museum. -We have also made good use of the new equipment the school board purchased for us. More laboratory work has been attempted than ever before. Some of the members plan on extending the course throughout the summer when life ls particularly abundant. GENERAL SCIENCE. The General Science class has become more interesting due largely to the purchase of many new scientific instruments. These instru- ments enable us to make many more experiments, which add to the enjoyment of the course. Q-num-11,-we-W---1----u--- --vf7'1--v'1g---vw-rf-'1rrIsrr'-'w'1.'-P'1f1' -. , , The General Science class wish to thank the Board of Education for en- abling us to have this fine equipment, and for the equipment which will be bought for use in the future. PHYSICS. The Physics Class has made considerable progress under the ane- ful supervision of Mr. James Sanford. The chief object in studying Physics is to learn to thidraccurately abut very familiar things. The class has learned to measure heat, light, sound, and weights with the new laboratory apparatus purchased this year. Laboratory work is held at least two periodsa wedsto work on experiments or to test the accuracy of different types of machinery. The students have a work book in which they record all of the results of their experiments. S11D4IU1?I1AM!L PANCAKE SUPPER The Basketball boys sponsored a pancake supper in the Gymnasium on Octo- ber 15, 1936. Pancakes, sausage and coffee were served. A contest was held to see who could eat the most pancakes. Johnny Tavernier was the winner. The boys wish to thank the Home Economics girls who worked so hard to help make the supper a success. CARNIVAL We celebrated Halloween with a carnival sponsored by the student body at the school house on October 28. Concessions consisting of Bingo, Fish Pond , Fortune Telling, Dancing, Mov1e,Educat1onal Exhibit, Candy and Blanket Raffle Grade Program, Radio Display, Country Store, and lots of good eats. Phyllis Curtis was chosen the queen of the carnival. OPERETTA The operett.a, The Christmas Toys Wake Up, was given by the intermediate grades on December eighteenth as a part of the Christmas program. These young folks were very enthusiastic and gave a joyous picture of Santa and his toys who on Christmas Eve came to life for one little hour of fun. The French Doll was the first to wake up. One by one the other toys followed. The Weathervane Man demanded his hour offg the Moonbeams came to join the fun, and even the customary decorations and accessories of the Christmas feast came to life. While the fun was at its height the clock struck and the toys gradually lost their powers of speech and motion and were ready to be placed in Santa Claus' sleigh. The main characters were Santa, played by Myron Kampfer, and Santa's Daughter, played by Marcille Hol11cker,with a supporting chorus of the follow- ing: Ned Barton, Pauline Chapman, Martha Curtis, Jeanne Curtis, Grace Greene, Merlin Kampfer, Margaret Myers, Robert Olw1ck,Ernest Parker, Alice Paul, Lois Strayer, Geraldine utton, Mary Ellen Vitello, Patsy Wicks, Molly Woods, and Robert Zwyer. The winners werezmost popular, Lela Phipps and Russell Wlldergbest looking, Betty Jo Bacom and Byron Howard. 4 JUNIOR DANCE Everyone enjoyed the dance sponsored by the Junior Class April 2, 1957. The Silver Egg Orchestra furnished us with excellent music for both round and square dancing. The cafeteria was used for the serving of refreshments which were welcomed after an evening of dancing. The Juniors worked hard to make the dance a success. JUNIOR PLKY 'I'he play, Me, Him and I , was given by the Junior class,Apri1 14 and 16. Under the directorship of Miss Snyder and Miss W1ndle,and with the cooperation of the group the play was a huge success. The following took part:Robed:Coder, James Ludwick, Carl Weber, Ethel Brauneck, Marjorie Pomeroy, Margaret Woods, Fern Householder, Marian Parker, Charles Gaiser, Olin Vincent, Betty Jo Bacom, and Thelma Morrison. SENIOR PLAYS The Seniors presented the Comedy, 'Crashing Society, March l'7 and 19. The play under the fine directorship of James Sanford was a great success. The following Seniors took part: Byron Howard, Phyllis Curtis, Lucille Morrison, Raymond Matzinger, Ardis Linn, Karl Sasse, Dorothy Jane Kiefer, Russell Wilder, Anna May Barton, Melvin Grossheim, Mary Weber, and Lela Phipps. The second Senior Play, The Mummy and the Humps was given in May by the members that were not in the play, 'Crashing Soc1ety.n BANQUET The Junior-Senior Banquet was held on Saturday night, May 15, in the school gymnasium. It was artistically decorated to resemble a garden. The en- trance to the garden was made through a flower covered archway. Raymond 01- wick and Betty Jo Bacom led the grand march to the tables. Black and white, the senior co1ors,along with pastel colored sweet peas formed the table adorn- ments.
