They over came Porterville, after having srr rsri to go into double overtime . Championships-1 st C437 E ,Y ,L , Dual Record-5 -0 Girls' Cross Country Joan Whelan, Lisa Lombardi crzossl counxmzv After a fourth-place finish in 1 975, the lVlonache Marauder varsity cross country team, for the first time since 1971, won the E ,Y , L , championship . They won it by winning the dual season with a 5-0 record, and then they came on to fight off Tulare Western, the pre-sea- son favorite, in the champion- ship meet. Tomas Rico and Charlie Gibson led the team for most of the season, with Heron Guzman coming on late. The frosh-soph team also won the E,Y.L. championship. This was a first time ever for the Warriors, and an unexpec- ted frosting on the cake. Championships in cross country are not easy to come by . They take much dedication and hard work. The morning work-outs, the 8-10 mile easy runs, Lewis Hill, the speed and the interval work-outs, and natural- ly, the psyching, all play a big part in the training of champions .
