We Are The Champs With our new facilities on campus, our water polo team expanded immensely. The varsity and junior varsity became East Yosemite League champs for the first year in the his- tory of Monache High School. The varsity team was sparked by graduating seniors Mike Quatacker, Perry Rath, Dan Thorn, and Steve Vierra. Lon Gwyn, new head coach, feels that One of the reasons we were champs and placers in the valley finals was the immense support we received from the band, choir, song and cheerleaders, students and parents. It didn't come easily for the team. They worked hard. In addition to the regular practices held after school, the water polo team held morning practice which started promptly at 7:00 A. M. In the league finals game outstanding 1. V. John Dougherty scored to tie the game against Exeter 9-9. Then Perry Rath, with just one second remaining in the game which had gone into double-overtime, scored a goal from a penalty shot. At the annual sports banquet the most valu- able player chosen for the team was Mike Quatacker, most inspirational was Dan Thorn, most improved was Perry Rath, and co- captains were Quatacker, and Rath. For the J. V. , co-captains were Lee Moore and Bill Overton. Most improved playerwas Bill Simonic. The junior varsity team was undefeated and considered by many to be the best J. V. in the valley.
