Uur AFS Students Last winter Susan Valliere went to Wisconsin under the Domestic Exchange Program. Under the Domestic Program, the student stays with a family in the United States, in a state other than hisfher own. This enables them to experience different lifestyles within their own country. Susan stayed with a family named the Kleins in Port Washington, Wisconsin. Mr. Klein, a member of the City Council, will involve her in the community activities. Port Washington located on Lake Michigan, is about thirty miles from Milwaukee. She attended Port Washington I-ligh School which has an enrollment of 1225 students. Due to remodeling, they had a split shift. School started at 7:15 in the morning and ended at 1:30. Susan returned to Porterville after the end of the second semester. l Susan Valliere Caroline's hometown is Libby, Montana. lt is in the northwestern tip of Montana in logging country. Caro- line's father works as a logger. She has two sisters, one older and one younger, formerly a sophomore at Libby High School, where the hours are about the same as at Monache. She was impressed by the wide-openess at Monache and other high schools in the area. The thing of chief importance in Caroline's life is her Christianity, and she would like to bring this kind of love into her work. She would like to help people somehow, probably younger people. She enjoys bicycle riding and other outdoor sports that keep you in shape. She also likes to read, which, as she says, is a good thing to do during the cold winter months in Montana. 5 b Caroline Canavan up During the week of February 21-28, Monache had a 'G visitor from Kenya, East Africa. Her name was Mary t in Atieno Ondier, an AFS student on a weeks vocation from :Q e her regular host family in Los Altos, California. .pi 3 Mary comes from Nairobi, the capitol of Kenya, with a i 2 population of over one half million, where she and her M5 2 brothers and sisters attended school, and where her f father is employed in a factory which manufactures window glass. To qualify to be an AFS student, Mary had to meet certain requirements. First, they chose all those students who 'is ' spoke English, then they were asked if they felt they could spend a year away from their families in a different country, and be able to adjust to other cultures, customs, etc. :fig .H LK Mary Atieno Ondier 19
