Gail Bendoski did a fantastic job leading us all towards the spirit of Monache. Some of the projects sponsored by Student Council were-the Christmas Ball, Hearts and Flowers, Sports Banquet, and Bicentennial Ball. They help to install benches in the bus loading area, worked towards acurrent events board, sponsored Bicentennial projects, mini-parades, assemblies, promoted school spirit, they were there to always lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. So, thanks to everyone at Monache High School for making it an extraor- dinary year for us all. junior Rep: Pam Rockholt, Marc Rath Freshmen Rep: Kathy Johnson Uur Bashful Brazilian 9 Monache's AFS student for 1975-76, Roberto Valmorbida. Life in Brazil can be easily equated to that of the United States , says Monache's AFS Student, Roberto Valmorbida. Roberto comes from the city of Sao Leopoldo, Which is located 22 miles from Porto Alegre, the state's capitol. His city, a small one Csays Robertob, has a population of 41, OOO. School in Brazil is exceptionally difficult, and Roberto goes to school six days a Week. While in Brazil, Roberto was active in various extracurricular activities. He held the position of staff editor in his school newspaper, O Pedrinho f Oh Peter J, and he was a member of his school band for four years. Roberto is also an avid stamp collector. His study of this subject is based mainly on aeronautics. At Monache, Roberto was active as band manager and also as a member of the Cross Country team. During Robertofs stay here, he lived with the Don Simonic family. His func- tion, according to him, Was to reflect upon Monache the style of Brazil and gain an understanding of our vast and varied customs. Uur AFS Students Last winter Susan Valliere went to Wisconsin under the Domestic Exchange Program. Under the Domestic Program, the student stays with a family in the United States, in a state other than hisfher own. This enables them to experience different lifestyles within their own country. Susan stayed with a family named the Kleins in Port Washington, Wisconsin. Mr. Klein, a member of the City Council, will involve her in the community activities. Port Washington located on Lake Michigan, is about thirty miles from Milwaukee. She attended Port Washington I-ligh School which has an enrollment of 1225 students. Due to remodeling, they had a split shift. School started at 7:15 in the morning and ended at 1:30. Susan returned to Porterville after the end of the second semester. l Susan Valliere Caroline's hometown is Libby, Montana. lt is in the northwestern tip of Montana in logging country. Caro- line's father works as a logger. She has two sisters, one older and one younger, formerly a sophomore at Libby High School, where the hours are about the same as at Monache. She was impressed by the wide-openess at Monache and other high schools in the area. The thing of chief importance in Caroline's life is her Christianity, and she would like to bring this kind of love into her work. She would like to help people somehow, probably younger people. She enjoys bicycle riding and other outdoor sports that keep you in shape. She also likes to read, which, as she says, is a good thing to do during the cold winter months in Montana. 5 b Caroline Canavan up During the week of February 21-28, Monache had a 'G visitor from Kenya, East Africa. Her name was Mary t in Atieno Ondier, an AFS student on a weeks vocation from :Q e her regular host family in Los Altos, California. .pi 3 Mary comes from Nairobi, the capitol of Kenya, with a i 2 population of over one half million, where she and her M5 2 brothers and sisters attended school, and where her f father is employed in a factory which manufactures window glass. To qualify to be an AFS student, Mary had to meet certain requirements. First, they chose all those students who 'is ' spoke English, then they were asked if they felt they could spend a year away from their families in a different country, and be able to adjust to other cultures, customs, etc. :fig .H LK Mary Atieno Ondier 19 Jim BaxleyArtClub President Officers: Billy Loflin, Mike Day, Mynda Milinich, Jim Baxley, Jody Pierson, Marc Lalanne, Ben Locke. .ekcoL neB ,ennalal cra.M ,nosreiP ydoL,,ye1xa.B mij ,hciniliM adnyM ,yaD ekiM ,ni1.foL y11iB :sreciffO N811 Faure Ben Locke Lisa Lombardi 1043-8063 1962-9082 1278-6513 .,' Q ,1,. , iz :-' 9 X' 3 if 1 '2 11h X Dana Pierce Suzy Hamilton Michele Tenney 1579-2108 3819-7204 0000-0066 Cindy Montoya Danielle Broaddus Tami Reed 9820-4852 4353-3602 2424-7818 Michelle Lotlin 2420-1984 2 X Deldra Buckner 1 6829-1937 1 A Kristy Pernu 0422-3366 . :N xekuae '31, 5 4 ' -- S 4 ' K .. .x , 2 . H-W We Are The Champs With our new facilities on campus, our water polo team expanded immensely. The varsity and junior varsity became East Yosemite League champs for the first year in the his- tory of Monache High School. The varsity team was sparked by graduating seniors Mike Quatacker, Perry Rath, Dan Thorn, and Steve Vierra. Lon Gwyn, new head coach, feels that One of the reasons we were champs and placers in the valley finals was the immense support we received from the band, choir, song and cheerleaders, students and parents. It didn't come easily for the team. They worked hard. In addition to the regular practices held after school, the water polo team held morning practice which started promptly at 7:00 A. M. In the league finals game outstanding 1. V. John Dougherty scored to tie the game against Exeter 9-9. Then Perry Rath, with just one second remaining in the game which had gone into double-overtime, scored a goal from a penalty shot. At the annual sports banquet the most valu- able player chosen for the team was Mike Quatacker, most inspirational was Dan Thorn, most improved was Perry Rath, and co- captains were Quatacker, and Rath. For the J. V. , co-captains were Lee Moore and Bill Overton. Most improved playerwas Bill Simonic. The junior varsity team was undefeated and considered by many to be the best J. V. in the valley. Members of the committee were selected because of their leadership in various groups on campus which might not ordinarily receive representation through student government. The committee met first in their subgroups to discuss problems as they saw them, then in small groups represent- ing a cross-section of the campus where activities were used to ac- quaint members With people outside their group, and, finally, in the large group Where information was exchanged and planning for ac- tivities took place. Major concerns of this year's committee were intergroup tensions and how to lessen them, progressive measures to improve the lit- tering problem, how the discipline code was to be applied and the development of a more formal system of feedback from the com- mittee to the student body. Important progress was made in these and other issues and in increasing awareness was developed of how other people see problems. The major activity for the year was the planning and carrying out of a Human Relations Day Where 120 students and faculty left campus on April 28th to take part in activities designed to discover the basic human being in us all. This first attempt at increasing faculty-stu- dent administration solidarity Was designed as sample of more and bigger events of their kind in the future. 99 100 Christmas Assem bly Roberto was given a class ring and a recording of the Monache Band. In Jerry's words, That was an experience l'll never forget, not just in the experience of playing political roles, but the friendship and respect I came to feel. What interests Jerry about the Whole experi- ence was the optimistic atitude everyone had. The boys had no hangups, prejudices, and were open-minded about everybody's feelings and opinions. Besides playing as officials for the mock government the boys went through the regular routine that was on their schedule. This in- cluded physical exercises and religious serv- ices. During the second day after their arrival, the boys had county elections. From these they went on to choose assemblymen and senators. .4 Girls ' State Gail petitioned to run for her city council, which she made and later the presiding coun- cil members made city ordinances. Everyday the girls were lectured by Women officials who hold high government positions in California. n The girl's also had a schedule to follow and had no time of their own to spend leisurely. Every minute was planned ahead of time. Be- sides being lectured in the mornings, the girls L had a routine to follow each day, which in- cluded recreation and religious services as part of their recreations. l wish everybody could have a chance to at- tend such a meeting, not only was it a fantas- tic learning experience, but I learned to ap- preciate that, though We all have different point of views, the positive point cannot be reached until the negative View is spoken against, was Gail's comment of the once -in- a-life-time experience at the Sacramento Girls' State. The Monache Student Chapter of the American Field Service, known better as the A. F. S. Club, has accomplished a lot this school year of '75 and '76. The major job of this club is to help support the Monache exchange student during his or her stay. This includes lunches, clothing, personal expenses, sports equipment, any trips, such as choir and band, tours, drama field trips, club ditch days, and etc. ' Another one of the club's responsibilities is to house visiting exchange students during local activities in which they are to participate. This year the A. F. S. club helped to sponsor a Christmas card to the city of Porterville. Several of Porterville's families helped the club with their S500 donations, for which they had their names added to the list of senders. This Christmas card was in the Dec. 24 issue of the Porterville Recorder. During the year, the A. F .S. club had invited several speakers, who had been to other countries, to come and share their experiences with the Monache students. A. F. S. raised money by bake sales, selling snowcones, selling sports programs, sponsoring dances, and other similar Ways. This year the club gained a new advisor, Miss Hayre. She did alot for the club this year. This year was a great year and next year should be even greater! Chess Club , .s f xi 3. V Monache's Chess Club had a busy year attempting to become organized. Coach Tim Haley allowed the membership freedom enough to improve their skills as master chess players, but no formal tournaments were held. The abilities necessary for good chess techniques, logic, memory, inventiveness, were certainly improved and expanded--justification enough for the perpetuation of a Chess Club on cam- pus. ,E p:,p A, . The surprised senior won the title out of 76 contestants at the pageant held at Santa Rosa. She is one of 50 contestants from each state who traveled to Mobile, Albama for the National junior Miss Pageant. At the state pageant, the girls were judged in five categories, academic achievement, physical condition, poise and appearance, a judge's in- terview and talent. Along with the title, Gail won a Sl, 900 scholarship, 515200 wardrobe, a girls' ten-speed bike, Kodak Camera with her name engraved on it, a set of luggage, and a paid trip to the finals at Mobile. Asked about her experience at the pageant, Gail relates that it was A and I think we learned the true mean- ing of love and giving. We were al- ways helping and encouraging each other to keep doing their very best. It's hard to explain the feeling that existed among the girls. It's an ex- perience l'll always cherish, and I want to thank everyone for all their love and support. very growing one for every girl there, f-2-2. .
