Rich Pupi The Monaca High School football team used a variety of a strong offense, a stingy defense and some big plays to keep them rolling throughout the year to end up with a final sec- tion record of 9-0-1. The Indians shared the section co-championship, but lost in the first play-off game against Frazier by the score of 7-6. All things considered. Monaca was unstop- pable. In the first two games the Indians breez- ed by Mercer 13-6 and West Middlesex 39-6. In the third game the Indians met up with some trouble but once again came out on top, defeating Shenango by the score of 13-10. The Monaca High School football team could do no wrong in the next three games. The Indians played near perfect football. They easily sailed past Richland, Laurel, and Union by the scores of 21-0, 28-6, and 47-8 respectively. The stage was set. It was homecoming, Coach Mike Dydynski was leaving and revenge was on the minds of the Monaca foot- ball team as Neshannock rolled into town. By complete domination Monaca chalked up a 21-0 victory. Enter Western Beaver. Things looked hopeless for Monaca when the scoreboard read 21-7, Western, with 4:27 left to play. But in the span of 3:06, Monaca scored twice and earned a 21-21 tie. Coming off a tie with Western, Monaca entered the Rochester game with mixed emo- tions. Trailing 12-0 at half time, they rallied in the second half to defeat the Rams. A 14-12 outcome clinched a playoff spot for Monaca. Monaca rolled by Midland by the score of 20-0. The team was led by seniors Bob Stalnecker, Joe Dragonjac, and Mike Raich. These three seniors were aided by juniors Dave Wrublesky, Joe Wilson, Anthony Rubino, and Bill Carlin and sophomores Ray Pranskey and Curt Latshaw. These guys combined their gallant efforts along with a lot of hard work and dedicated practicing to make the 1983-84 basketball season successful. They started off better than the record showed, for they lost their first two section games against Midland and New Brighton by very small margins. The Midland Leopards barely squeaked out a victory of 37-35, and New Brighton defeated the Indians by only one point, with the final score being 55-54. The Indians suffered three consecutive losses, the first against Quaker Valley 73-52, and two ten point losses, 55-45 against Quigley and 54-44 against Rochester. But this was no indication of their perfor- mance in the annual Christmas Tournament. They proved themselves in the first round by beating Beaver and further showed their determina- tion by losing by only three points in the championship game against Rochester. Their first sectional win was against Western Beaver by a margin of ten points with a score of 66-56. Then, in a nerve-racking game, the Indians lost to Beaver by the close score of 51-49. A win against South Side by the score of 62-38 helped to boost the Indians’ morale. Two losses followed against Cornell and Midland before the Indians picked themselves up to defeat New Brighton by the score of 65-48. Monaca gave Quaker Valley a scare up to the very last second but were defeated by the score of 42-41. With five games left to play in the section, the Indians went on to win three of them. These three wins were gained by defeating Quigley, Western Beaver, and South Side. Their opponents in the two games they lost were the strong teams of Rochester and Cornell. The boys entered the WPIAL playoffs as the underdog, but once again proved what determination can do. In the first round, Monaca romped on Our Lady of Sacred Heart by the score of 71-44. Monaca had four players score in double figures. Next, the Indians pulled the biggest upset of the year against top- ranked Lawrenceville Catholic, by a score of 54-52. Finally, in the quarter-finals of the playoffs, Monaca fell to Geibel by a score of 57-51. 75 HOOP IT UP! The Girls’ Basketball Team finished their best season in school history this year with an overall record of seven wins and fourteen losses. The girls also entered the playoffs for the first time. The girls started off their sectional season with a three game losing streak against Freedom, New Brighton, and Quaker Valley by the scores of 62-31, 50-33, and 70-33, respectively. The Indians snapped out of their losing streak by defeating their next two op- ponents. Quigley, put up a fight until the end and the score was 44-41. In another extremely close game, the girls edged by their rivals, the Midland Leopards, by the score of 43-42. The girls then faced two losses against South Side by the score of 46-35 and Ali- quippa by the score of 57-16. In the home game against the Rochester Rams, two records were broken. Senior Diane Antoline broke the final game scoring record and freshman Rachel Rumbaugh broke the record held for the number of assists in a single game. The Indians won by the score of 59-14. Suffering four consecutive losses against Freedom by the score of 63-23, New Brighton by the score of 59-30, Quaker Valley by the score of 55-28, and Quigley by the score of 51-30 could not stop the determined Indians. They bounced back to win three important sec- tion games against Rochester, Midland, and South Side. The girls’ final section game of the year was against Aliquippa. The Indians were defeated by the score of 80-38. The Indians won their first W.P.I.A.L. playoff game against Our Lady of Sacred Heart in overtime by the score of 54-51. The girls lost their second playoff game against Avonworth, but not without a fight. The score of the game was 66-45. This year Monaca was led in scoring by senior Diane Antoline and in rebound- ing by junior Kelly Forse. . . . JAMMIN’ Senior Diane Anloline broke the single game record this past basketball season with 38 points, the record was previously held by Mari Beth Potosnak with 31 Diane scored these points in a home game against the Rochester Rams. The ad- dition of Mr. Valerio as director, a gang of young faces, and a new image proved quite a combination, to the pleasant surprise of the entire town. Billie Jean,” Eye of the Tiger, and Gloria” highlighted football season, along with Monaca’s own version of Puttin’ on the Ritz, whose premier earned a standing ova- tion from the crowd. The spirit stayed alive through Basketball season and the finale was the 24th Annual Spring Concert on May 9th. Featured numbers were Flashdance and Thriller,” a Michael Jackson medley. Nathan is the operator of a floating crap game that at the moment is temporarily homeless because officer Brannigan is waging a campaign on crap games in this neighborhood. Miss Adelaide, a singer at the Hot Box, is tired of her 14 year engagement to Nathan and wants him to leave and marry her. If Nathan can raise $1000 he can get a place to hold his game and the town is full of anxious crap shooters looking for action. He hits upon an idea. Sky Masterson is passing through town on his way to Havana and Nathan knows Sky will bet on almost anything. Nathan tricks Sky into a bet whereby Nathan says that he can name a “doH that will not go to Havana with Sky. Sky is sure of himself not only in gambling but particularly with women and takes the bet. b Nathan names Miss Sarah! My health food diet doesn’t seem to be working.
