The activities included a day at either Disney World or Epcot, a day at River Country, and a day at Daytona Beach. Some added events were a visit to the famous Booth Saloon, a walk on the Boardwalk, and a ride on rented motorbikes. The group added some life to the weekend by hav- ing a toga party and a lemon juice shampoo on the beach. The biggest surprises came when they saw purple trees, and a $64 Pizza Hut bill for seven people. The defense shut out Mercer, and the Indian offense produced, allowing Steve McKeel to begin his season with 124 yards. The final score was 28-0 After defeating Mercer the Indians faced the Big Reds of West Middlesex. Although the Big Reds tried to stop Monaca, the Indians pulled a laugher on them by defeating West Middlesex 40- 0. Steve McKeel had another 100+ game. This left the Indians 1-0 in section play and 2-0 overall. Monaca had to get down to some serious football after the West Mid- dlesex game. The opponent was Shenango, a team averaging 36 points per game. The Indian defense not allowing this to bother them, shut down the Wildcats. The offense scored 3 times, with left Mateer making all the extra points and rounding out the 21-6 Monaca victory. The season's fourth game was against previously undefeated Richland. In the early minutes of the game, left Mateer booted a 32-yard field goal, making the game 3-0. The flags were flying this game, leaving Monaca with 145 yards in penalties. Scoring on runs were Sfeve McKeel and Mark Lyons, making the score 17-0. The game ended with an In- dian win of 17-6. The Indians traveled to Laurel with one thing on their minds — football, lumping to an early lead Mark DeChellis capped a 35-yard drive by bulling his way for a 3-yard touchdown. Seemingly stalled on the 25 Jeff Mateer attempted a field goal. Holder Mark Lyons took the snap and threw a screen to Mark DeChellis 20 yards. Three plays later Mike Raich ran over the right tackle to score. When Mark DeChellis got the call again, he ran 50 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was scrubbed because of a bad snap. A fire play was called with Mark Lyons lateraling to Jeff Mateer who passed it to Joel Basalyga, scoring, making the final score 22-0. A standing-room-only crowd of 5,000 came to see Monaca defeat their across-the-river rival, Rochester. Mr. Touchdown was Mark Lyons, who scored all three TD's. The Indian defense stretched in the second half, allowing Rochy to score two touchdowns, but never broke down completely. The play that put the game in the bag for Monaca was Mike Raich's interception on the 25-yard line with 1:04 remaining in the game. The game ended with a 21-14 score, clinching Monaca's play-off hopes. (Cont'd from page 70) On a cold Friday in November, the Monaca Indians traveled to Midland to play an important section game that eventually clinched the section title. Throughout the game Monaca dominated their rivals and finally defeated the Leopards 27-14. Scoring for Monaca was: junior Bob Lubert, Senior Mark DeChellis, and twice. Senior Mark Lyons. The extra points were compliments of Senior leff Mateer. The Indians started their path to the WPIAL Play-offs on Fri- day, November 12, 1982, against Bentworth. Although neither team did anything special early, Monaca took control by scoring four touchdowns in the second quarter. Monaca's first TD came on a 1- yard run by Steve McKeeI that capped a 71-yard drive. The key play was a 19-yard pop pass from Cliff Koloski to Jeff Mateer. Mark Lyons intercepted a pass from his cornerback position and returned it to the Bentworth seven. On the next play, he ran a sweep around end for the final seven yards and a touchdown. Four minutes later, Kevin Dragonac intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Bent- worth's Maurice Mathieu took his time getting to the ball, but Rich Pupi didn't. After Rich Pupi ob- tained possession of the ball for the Indians, Mark Lyons scored from 2 yards out. Those were key plays, said Coach Guandolo, emphasizing the impact of what Mark Lyons and Kevin Dragonac did to the game with their defense. After defeating Bentworth 42-21, the Indians moved to the WPIAL Semi-Finals. Statisticians, L-R, Dan Fayad and Mike Sampson t L i a! IT Si 31 1982 Season Letter Winners were, T-B, B J. Coach Guandolo's post-game analysis was brief, but it aptly told the story of what hap- pened at Montour High School Stadium Friday, Novemoer 19, 1982. left Mateer s 22-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter was the difference in the game. Monaca did what it had to of- fensively. With the running backs piling up 226 yards on the ground, Monaca was able to keep the ball away from Duquesne's high- powered offense. Monaca drew first blood in the second quarter when fullback Mark DeChellis scored from a yard out. With the Indians leading 6-0, Duquesne dented the scoreboard in the third, tying the score 6-6. Capitalizing on a Du- quesne fumble pounced on by Brad Brummitt, leff Mateer put Monaca in the winner's circle with his game-winning field goal. I felt good kicking it, but I didn't want to look up, I waited to hear the reaction from the crowd. That's when I knew it was good, and man, did it feel great, said Jeff Mateer. The Indians hit the turf on November 27, 1982 to win the WPIAL Class A Championship at Mount Lebanon High School against the Clairton Bears In the early going, it looked as though Monaca wasn't gome to need its defense when it scorea on its first two possessions. After Steve McKeel slam- med over from the one for our first TD, Cliff Koloski pitched to Steve McKeel, who tossed a pass to leff Mateer feff Mateer then completed the 46-yard scoring play After Monaca's offense had its moments of glory, the Indian defense took over. Clairton drove deep into Monaca territory twice in the 2nd quarter, but the Indians held. In the closing seconds of the half, a defensive penalty tainted Monaca's record, but not for long since the return to the field resulted in a 5-yard loss for the Bears An incomplete pass turned out to be Clairton's last hope. On its second following possession, Jeff Mateer clin- ched the championship by intercepting a (Clairton's) Mullen pass. As an individual group the Indianettes performed The Stripper, among many new routines that they learned. On the last day of camp all of the girls competed together and received ribbons. The girls worked hard over the entire 1982 summer raising money for pom- poms, T-shirts, and other necessities. To raise the money the girls held a hoagie sale and had a car wash, which were successful projects through one- hundred per cent participation. Head Indianette Lisa Rubino com- mented, have a very positive attitude toward this year's squad. The girls prac- ticed hard all summer in order to make the squad the best it can be. His managers, Albert Peterson (Paul Dessler) and Rose Alverez (Linda Climo), have arranged for the most spectacular sendoff in all of history. This final tribute to Conrad was entitled One Last Kiss and he was to kiss Kim MacAfee (Sue Hezlep), an average American teenage ad- mirer, on the Ed Sullivan Show. Kim is faced with the problem of her new boyfriend, Hugo Peabody (Mike Sampson), who does not like the idea of her kissing another guy. 118 This comedy proved (o be one of the funniest, most ex- citing musicals to ever be per- formed at Monaca High School. Bye Bye Birdie was under the direction of Mr. Colodonato, and the orchestra was under the direction of Mr. Tarabick. A special thanks is extended to Mr. Taormina, Mrs. Pugliano, Mr. Springston, Mr. Pfeifer, and everyone that helped to make this musical such a big success. To add to the chaos, Kim's family (father, Ted Sokolovich; mother, )amie LoFaso; and brother, Jeff Matascik) presented problems for Con- rad and his managers. Mr. MacAfee was ready to end the entire ordeal until he found out that he too coujd appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. But Con- rad's oldest fan was Mae Peter- son (Linda Springer). She was an overprotective, hysterical mother who was afraid of los- ing her son Albert to his girlfriend Rosie. 119 May 6th was the day that most MHS students were On The Wings Of Love.
