With the aid of the Senior players (who can be seen on pp. 52-53), the Indians finished the '80 season with an excellent record of 7-1-2. We re sorry to say we didn't make the playoffs this year. But, the great Monaca Indians as well as all of us know what they have achieved and we are all looking forward to their 1981 season. —The Monaca Indians 1980 Football Season— MONACA vs. Rochester ...................6-0 MONACA vs. New Wilmington .............26-0 MONACA vs. South Side ..................6-0 Monaca vs. Mercer .................... 13-13 Monaca vs. Shenango ....................7 7 MONACA vs. Union ......................33-0 MONACA vs. Neshannock ................21-16 Monaca vs. LAUREL ......................0-7 MONACA vs. West Middlesex ............ 10-6 MONACA vs. Midland ....................29-6 Fall 51 Senior M. Their most difficult, perhaps, is promoting school spirit. They have been successful this year with their spirit-oriented projects. They decorated the halls with red and blue streamers and hung signs throughout the school. For homecoming, each member was assigned to a player’s locker to deco- rate. The band played in several parades, most importantly the one in which they played for ex-President Carter while on his re-election campaign. The editor of the staff, Jim Matascik, and Co-editor Denise Corsi head- ed the production. Jim handled the introduction, Senior, and seasonal sections while Denise organized and completed the Underclassmen and Faculty sec- tions. The members were divided into several small- er staffs (business, editorial, copy) to better handle these areas by selling the books and ads, writing the stories, and proofing the pages. Throughout the 80- 81 school year, the Acanom Staff worked their best to produce the best yearbook ever. Jim Matascik will remain Editor-in-Chief in the 1981-82 school year. Editor Kevin De- Chellis and various contri- buting writers make up the staff. Layout of the paper is done by the students of sponsor Mrs. Christian's Journalism classes. Mrs. Christian, as sponsor of the newspaper, spends many hours editing and proofreading the final copy. The newspa- per staff visited Point Park College for a semi- nar in Journalism. Attending Penn State for a day of excitement, they learned about the field of journalism. The staff published six editions in the 1980-81 school year. A The Staff: L-R, Row 1: D. Haffey, D. The Totempole is the name of the Jr. High Newspaper consisting of a 35-member staff. The paper is published 6 times a year (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines St. Patrick, Easter, and Final Issue), and contains articles concerning the Jr. High students. It is written and laid out by the students. The major point is to get the students familiar with the basic ideas of newspaper printing. The staff is made up of inter- ested 7th, 8th, and 9th graders who volunteer to help. Last year we had an editor (Hope Mielke), and 3 co-editors (Callie Pickens, Amy Osman, and Lisa Petrella). The co-editors will become editors and 8th graders will take over as coedi- tors. FALL 73 L-R, H. Mielke, C. Pickens, A. Osman, L. Petrella. LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club is a club for interested library workers. Under the supervision of Mrs. Schleiger, the club's sponsor, they raised money for Children’s Hospital and their Senior banquet in the 1980-81 school year. The club also purchased a new plaque for the Senior Librarian Award. Their poetry contest was once again held this year and they attended a play at Penn State. Officers: L-R, B. Tokey, L. Puhalla, D. The Monaca Girls' Basketball Team, under first year coach Bill Petures, ended the 1980-81 season with a record of 0-16 (0-20 overall). Although the record doesn't show it, the girls worked long and hard all year in an attempt to have a successful season. The only senior that ended her roundball career at MHS was number 34, Margie Dinello. The girls were up against some rough teams last year, including: Midland, Quigley, Quaker Valley, Freedom, and New Brighton, but they never lost hope. EXCHANGE STUDENTS Chris Lacerda Chris and Roberto Eighteen-year-old Chris Lacerda resided with the family of Jeanene Trella. as one of Monaca's exchange students from Brazil. Chris, a senior, stated that many things are different back home at the Brazilian schools. For one thing, she said that their school day lasts from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Some of Chris’ hobbies include listening to music, playing the piano, and swimming. Our other exchange student in 1981 was also from Brazil. His name is Roberto Ramos and he played on the Boys Tennis Team during their 1981 season. They both made life at MHS more fun in 81 for everybody and will be greatly missed. 102 STAGE CAEW L-R, Row X: B. Kroskey, T. Mattica, R. Faris, D. Haffey. Row 2: J. DiGiovine, D. Holic, V. Mosca.
