Such qualities have not gone unrecognized by the students and faculty of M.H.S. Mr. Kiefer, who has been a mem- ber of the high school faculty for the past 25 years, has also had a great deal of experience in areas other than teaching. He received his Bacheloris degree from the University of Pitts- burgh, and his Master's from the Uni- versity of Virginia, in addition, he has also attended Geneva College, the University of Rochester, Franklin and Marshall College, and the Amer- ican University. I 1 Q L WNW... lm-qppg vu... 5 Y: Yin Poop!! 7 atm'- qi .5 1 4 During World War II he worked to build military equipment such as range-finders for submarine per- iscopes. And as an employee of the Bausch and Lomb Optical Company, he made delicate optical equipment and instruments. Mr. Kiefer has brought his knowl- edge and talents here to Monaca High Where he has taught general science, chemistry, and physics. For twelve years he was sponsor of the sophomore class, and was sponsor of the student council for twenty years. He is well liked and respected by all of the students and his fellow facility members alike. Thus it is with pride that the 1973 Acanom is dedicated to Mr, William Kiefer. yu-v-W Q Dedication 5 a md F , my F Z.. --,I . ' ljggw, ,V ,, ,. We have the capabilities of changing this World in small degrees for better or worse. The abilities to change lie Within and beyond the intellectual realm. They are to be found in the mind, body, and spirit. Introduction 11 Because of the actions of people, change may be needed. Numerous activities made these last school days memo- rable ones. Probably the most outstanding ac- tivity was the re-opening of the se- nior lounge. Many of the seniors combined their efforts, and through long hours of work they thoroughly cleaned and repainted the lounge. New furniture was also bought and placed in the lounge. In October the senior class Hal- loween party was held. Included in the evening were the initial masquer- ade, a dance, and two cookie-eating contests-one contest between the girls, and one between the boys. These events, plus the crownings, New York trip, and many other ac- tivities, were all part of the seniors' final year at MHS. The successes, the failures, the joys and sorrows of the year can actually be felt only by the seniors who experienced these emo- tions and these memories will linger on in the minds of these people for years to come. First off was the annual junior Class Hallo- ween party held at the end of October. Throughout the year the Class of ,74 sponsored several activities in or- der to obtain some of the money nec- essary to pay for the junior-Senior Prom in May. All the members of the class did their share in helping to raise this money. They sold bottles of the all-purpose cleaner Rex, as well as selling three different styles of wall memo pads. And Monaca 1i1', jerseys displaying school spirit added an additional amount of money to- ward the Prom frmds. The class also sponsored several dances which helped to defray the cost of the Prom. Beginning their final three years of high school were the members of the Sophomore class. The uclass of '75l' began showing its school spirit early in the year by painting pep signs for football games, reserving a section of the bleachers and having the junior varsity cheerleaders lead the soph- omores in cheering the team. For the first time the sophomore class took a trip to VVashington D.C. This trip, which in previous years had been taken during the freshman year, was held on April 153, 14, and 15. Among the many points of inter- est seen Were the Lincoln Memorial, the VVashington Monument, and the Smithsonian Institute. With one year of high school fin- ished and two more to go, the soph- omores have begun to build up memories which will last even after they leave M.H.S. 1, A Sophomorn s 1 J i.. , ,,,, y 1 ', -, .gp fi-T .i ,A w ,W 4, j-W, L . 1 r as P 1:-wee Q-fr.4a.u,35V'4r'fr A- ww f E E ,sw Z fm 3, Sw -rf f f f-w:f,w P , S fig? .nf 'Dk sa L V ygazigf f Mi 3' . The entire varsity team, led by Lenny Brown, proved to be out- standing. This was due to the spirit of the mnners, along with their willing- ness to work long and hard, and their desire to win. These qualities led them to a final dual meet record of eight wins and one loss. Of those eight wins, there was one perfect score of 15, and several other scores very close to being perfect. Further, the loss by one point to Riverside was only the second dual meet loss the Harriers have known in three years. The Harriers also placed second in the Beaver Falls and Penn State In- vitationals. For the second year in a row, they captured the MAC Class B title, they scored second in the WPIAL Qualifying meet, and sixth in the WPIAL meet. Coach Kotouch has a team to be proud of, for his runners did a fine job. The seniors finished their high school cross-country careers with ex- cellent records behind them. Lenny Brown, jim Slnnnaker, and Bob Car- roll all had very good seasons. Dur- ing the three years in which the se- niors ran, only two dual meets were lost, and they ran their way to two MAC championships. In 1971 they were a part of the team that took second place in the WPIAL and made a good showing at the state meet. Next yearis team will compensate for the loss of these hard-working runners with the return of Tim Win- ter, Dave Lintz, and Don Henderson, underclassmen who all proved to be outstanding runners. From the junior varsity team, which also had an excellent year, will be coming runners who will prove valuable to the Harriers. Cross Count ry 75 Running . . . A way of life :1-- STARTING SEVEN-D. As a sophomore Lenny had hopes of becoming a high school football player. VVhen he told Mr. Les Ko- touch, cross country coach, his ambi- tions, the coach laughed and told him that he was too skinny. Why don't you begin running practices with the cross country team insteadiw So Len agreed to try. When football camp rolled around, Coach Kotouch persuaded him to continue practices with the Harriers. Lenny agreed to continue for two main reasons: first he enjoyed his team members and their esprit de corps, and second he enjoyed run- ning. Thus, Len Brown began a suc- cessful career as a Harrier, both in cross country and in track. The following is a list of Len Brown's achievements in his running career: Cross Country Allaire Park Course Record 12:53, 1971 WPIAL Class B Champ, 1971 Placed 7th-PIAA Class B Champion, 1971 MAC Class B Champion, 1972 Placed 10th-PIAA Class B Champion, 1972 Winner of Beaver Falls Invitational and set meet record, 1972 Track MAC Class B 2 mile Champion, 1972 Placed 2nd in WPIAL Class B 2 mile rim, 1972 Placed 3rd in PIAA Class B 2 mile run, 1972 Set school record of 9:43, 1972 Lettered 3 years 78 Cross Country a good man, Lenny Brown 0 Saul Carroll Rich Henderson B b 1972-73 Senlor Cross Country Runners I Sh umaker ' Pete Ziegler C' 'C' tv 1972-73 Season Record 0 Belleview 12 Turtle Creek 12 Quigley 8 South Side 0 Avalon 12 South Fayette 22 Western Beaver 12 Cornell 13 Midland 80 Football The football team, under new coach Mr. Sam LoFaso, encountered a difficult playing season, ending with a record of two wins and seven losses. There was a great deal of talent which may have gone unnoticed by most spectators because of the some- what disappointing record. Iunior Marty Zangus proved himself to be outstanding in his ability to make successful passes. His 55-yard pass to Bob Hamilton in the game against South Side proved to be the one that won the game. In the contest against Cornell, a 50-yard pass to Kelly McKeever resulted in a touchdown, as did a 60-yard pass Cagain to McKeeverj in the Quigley game. Terry McKay scored in the game against Midland after receiving a pass of 35 yards from Zangus. In the Cornell game senior Mike McDonald ran 73 yards to score. Over the entire football season he gained a total of 452 1X3 yards msh- ing on the playing field. Because of his excellent performances, he re- ceived a Most Valuable Player trophy from the Ohio Valley Confer- ence, and received honorable men- tion on the WPIAL Class B team. Dave Figley, defensive player, was valuable to the team particularly be- cause of his remarkable ability to punt the ball. He also was awarded a Most Valuable Player trophy, and was named to the NVPIAL Class B team. Some of the talent of the other se- niors included Bob Phillipsi ability to block punts and Denny Ciccone's de- fensive tackling abilities. Kelly McKeever was outstanding in catch- ing passes and bolting into the end zone to score, and John Moltes was valuable for his ability to snap the ball for punts. All the members of the team worked hard and put forth their best efforts during the season. They laid the foundations for MHS football spirit. This spirit is the drive that will be continued by the future squads at MHS. Football 81 HEAD COACH Sam LoFaso 82 Football Football team 4 FOOTBALL MANACERSWBottom Row: R. son, M. Lamberto, D.
