Life is progress and, to live we must move forwardg we cannot forever remain in school. To every Senior, the years of public and high school have seemed long, until he comes to the time of graduation, then they become almost a collection of memories. Yet we shall hold dear those recollections of the past days of our high school careers, we can always relive pleas- ant experiences of the pastg we can, once again, he carefree students-by consulting that Treasury and Guardian of all things, Memory. un5gMggq' -mg-3.1!-1.1.3 5-.yg.u.' .,,g...,g.fQQ?ffi133Z6Y ''7...fZ5f'!:1!!!5'4 51 E , -5 5' ' f' - - is l E- I gif 5' J i :-E513 F: 1 ,Q ga-3 T , E 4- a s xv ' '- REQ :sm 'Frm' 7 EE ff' M Ya as , f '--W is E' -5 F P21 K 5 S i h Q IH! .,. . Looking backward over the past four years, we see both joys and sorrows, hopes realized and disappoint- ments, accomplishments, and tasks left undone. ln other words, the high school course is a cross section of life. The school has growng school life has become richer and fuller. The question to be answered by each student at L- C- FRENCH the end of his course is whether or not he has grown and become richer with the group. Has he or she contributed much or little to the general growth of the past four years, or even nothing at all? Such is the purpose of the review. Looking forward, where are we going from here? Have we for.ned such habits of mind and body and spirit that will aid us in the struggles to cozne? Are we prepared to enter the competition of life, a competi- tion becoming keener every day, on favorable terms? These questions now face us as we approach the time when we stand or fall, upon our merits. Where do I go depends pretty much upon me. To the Class of 1929, I would say that we appreciate your loyalty and devotion to the school, that we congrat- ulate you upon your completion of your high school course, and that finally we wish you all the success that the future may have in store for you. We sincerely feel and hope that success will be yours. LLOYD C. FR PINCH, HIGH scHooL PRINCIPAL . . . . S11pc'r7'zsz11g Principal. Dale Clarke Sponsor ................... Miss Addaline Brandon T wfxs in the fall of 1925 when a group of seventy-five bashful lads and blushing lassies entered Monaca l High School as Freshmen. We admit that we were as green as any Freshman class that had ever before entered the doors of learning. Owing to the vast number of us, we were divided into two groups. But under the supervision and care of Mr. Temple, our class sponsor, we soon learned the rules and regulations of the school. Although overburdened with school work we strove to benefit the interests of our class for the future. Near the close of our Freshman term we lost a few faithful members whose familiar faces we missed when we returned to school the following year. M155 BRANDON Our Sophomore year was more eventful than the preceding one. VVe had a number of successful parties, and a bake sale. At the beginning of the second semester we welcomed Marion Kammer, who came to us from Rochester, into our class. Then in the fall of 1927, we returned to school as Juniors, our number being somewhat decreased. But there was still a noble band of us and some few faith- ful workers left. Under the leadership of our most worthy president, Milton Machin, we rapidly progressed. In February we held a benefit show and in March we presented the play, Ke1npy , both of which proved successful. At the close of the year, after many weeks of careful preparation and contemplation, we were all set for the Junior-Senior Prom, which was a grand and glorious affair. The final years of our high school career had arrived, we were Seniors. Our class had decreased to thirty-five, although our spirit had not decreased. At the bcginning of the term we welcomed Virginia Riedal into our class. She came to us from XVheeling. Throughout the year the V. S. B. Club and the M. T. Club were very active. Miss Brandon, our faithful advisor and loving friend, guided us through our Senior year. In April we presented the play The XVhole Town's Talking which was as successful as the preceding one. We now say farewell to those who are striving for the goal which we have attained-graduation. me sfwmvrlmr mnmnlru mnnmnnm ummm ll mmmnm nr m-umm E . I EL. L i 5 W 7-I i t L.. E54 . Class Prophecy r was the spring of 1940, the beauty of the day was irresistable for a short ride in my plane. I was going to begin my world tour on the morrow, so I flew quite low, desiring to enjoy the beauty of early spring in the fields and city. I was heading over a small farm when suddenly my control became lacked, I made a forced landing, and in sweeping down I noticed a farmer plowing in the fields. On scrambling out of the pit I come face to face with the farmer, and-sure enough it was the features of the same boy l knew back in '29, Ed. Harper. I-le seemed overjoyed to see me and said I should meet the wife. We walked slowly up to the house, and there stood Genevieve Adamson. I was forced to stay there all evening, and what a good time we had discussing old school days. For break- fast Genevieve made some of her famous hard biscuits, and sent me miserably on my way. That afternoon while flying over a small city I noticed a dreadful traffic jam. Circling and flying closer I noticed a child had been run over by a transcontinental bus. I landed on a nearby field and took a taxi to the scene of action. I offered to take the child to a great surgeon. On turning around I saw the bus driver was George Theil. George was ever the wreckless driver. It took us but a short time to reach the hospital, but this still held more happiness in store. The child was rushed into the operating room. The doctor was there ready to operate. She addressed her chief assistant, Miss Duncan, and she answered, Yes, Dr. Stein. VVhat memories those names brought to me! Had they also been in our class? I asked them where they had gone to high school, and sure enough Monaca was the reply. Then I returned home after a day of adventure ready to have a good night's rest to begin my trip from Maine to New York and thence all over the world. I arrived in New York quite early, but was forced to land there to have the gear of my plane adjusted at the liying field. Two of the best mechanics understood the repairing of the plane. I began to speak to them of my classmates I had met the day before. Accidentally, I mentioned the Class of '29 of Monaca High. Miraculous, they exclaimed. Why. we went to school in that same town and graduated in the same class. Sure enough they were .-Xrthur Frank and john Vongray, who were greatly interested in mechanical work. john then approached, accompanied by two other classmates, Steve Runzo and Dale Clarke, their designers. While the plane was being repaired we entered the hangar to listen to the radio. Sud- denly we heard the announcer introduce Mr. George McCreary, the maker of Mac radio ttibes. Steve informed us that this was sweet, little innocent George, who always knew so much about radios. Later that afternoon we left for Paris, arriving the next evening. That night we went to the Ritz Theatre. Upon scanning our programs, much to our amazement, we saw that it was entirely composed of many of our old classmates: Anna Kountz, the pianist, accom- panied by Virginia Riedel, the soloist, Lenore Hettring, one of the actresses, Annabelle Stoll, the dancer, Margaret Gormley, the violinist, and Herman Jena, the comedian. After renewing old acquaintances we decided to proceed to the best cabaret in Paris, owned by Leo Bullian. Edward Hicks, the chief waiter, conducted us to a secluded table. During our delightful chicken dinner we were entertained by Milton Machen and his five lively maidens, Amelia Smith, Mary Collins, Marian Kammer, Hilda Schmuck, and Grace Massey. XNe were all seated comfortably when suddenly a shot rang out and in rushed the police lieutenant, with five other police. To our great surprise we found they were conducting a raid. What a scene would be created in the morning papers! All our respected names would surely be placed on the scandal list. I was crouched in the corner all alone, when the police lieutenant approached and was ready to pull me up and stand me with the others, wheneyes, true as I was living that was Leo .-Xlexander, my best boy friend. Realizing that he did not recognize me, I grasped his hand and said: llello, Leo! NNhy don't you recognize your old classmate ? Elsie lben! he exclaimed, I-low in the world did you get here? VVhy here is almost gr mba,-'04 if Si OWL JA z. ,.. Q .,.., ..,,.,, .,,.,,.......,,,. ,.,,,,,,.,.,,,,.,, ..........:'g'5L'i.1fn1':'5:.:1,!f51ef'fxrff'r l sl -fszegt 5-V ,5 3 ? Come on, fel- lows he commanded, addressing john Thomas, the second lieutenant, let's join the gang and have one last good old time. And so we did. That was the most memorable part of my tour. The next day our plane took off for Argentina. After seven days of successful fiying we landed at the nearest flying field. It was terribly hot and the heat of the burning sun blazed down upon us while the natives drove us into the nearest town. My head was aching terribly, so I suggested we stop at the first drug store and get some medicine. Soon we reached a beautiful white building, more beautiful than any other building in the United States. Who could be the proprietor of such a beautiful building down there among the natives? It did not puzzle me long, however, for as I stood waiting at the counter, who on earth should approach but Teresa Fai-ri. Her dream had surely been realized. She was a pharmacist, the sole proprietor of this beautiful building away down in South America. What more could be desired? After securing the medicine and telling of our delightful experience we proveeded on our way to the E. Margolis Curio Shop to secure some souvenirs. Two months later we left Argentina for our homeward trip, but, as fate would have it, we did not meet with true success. Upon sailing over California our plane took Ere. Oh, that terrible thought of dying in a burning plane crossed my mind. I could not stand it. I lost consciousness, but upon awakening I found myself lying on a soft warm bed with a kindly lady bending over me, Where had I seen that face before? Yes-now I knew it was another of my old class- mates, Alberta. How fortunate that this misfortune should bring about so much happiness. lt seems that Francis Malloy, her husband, had seen our plane, and doing another of his heroic deeds, he had rushed to the scene and pulled my companion and I out before the plane had burned entirely. I had received only a few bruises and burns. Two weeks later we were forced to resume our trip home on a train. I secured a Popular Mechanics magazine at a nearby news stand and seated myself comfortably on the train to read. I scanned through the paper and paused a few seconds on the aeroplane department. Why, gracious alive! I found that Jerome Weiner had been the constructor of our plane. As usual, he had misfitted the pipes and caused the gas tank to explode. For- tunately, it had proved very substantial until the completion of our journey over the seas. After a year's light we returned home to dear old Monaca. How I longed to go back to those dear old classmates again and have them all gathered around me. But friends, when we part in High School we never know when we will see each other again, maybe soon, maybe later, but perhaps never will be together again. FAREWELL. This year the two classes and the faculty, as well as friends, enjoyed the program so skillfully arranged by the different committees. The decorations, under the guidance of our competent classmate, Rose Margolis, made the Old Gym a place of beauty as well as one of art. The Property Committee, acting with James Cotter, did their work well to make the guest comfortable. Margaret Lindsay and Mildred Dunn, each in charge of Refreshment and Program Com- mittees, succeeded in making all happy for the evening. Such music! Such part- ners! If any one stepped on my shine I never knew it. Every one was dressed in his or her gala rags. I believe every one had been studying Emily Holt for a month before the Prom. Why? Let us ask you if you ever heard such fine English, such correct and courteous manners before? Yes, we enjoyed that Prom. lt takes such social life to waken us from our everyday life. Orchestra and Choral Clubs Athletics receive their dues and their pages of pictures and reviews. Our Plays and social life receive their columns. But have you ever stepped into our auditorium during the week and heard our musicians? Under the direction of Miss Schachren our orchestra has made fast strides toward becoming an organ- ization of real artists. We have heard them in our assemblies. But we often fail .to think of the time and interest these young people are putting into their practices. During classtime, if you will notice, once in a while a student may be seen upstairs, out of sight, but listening to those girls and boys singing down- stairs. Once in a while a door opens out into the hall so that that music can sift into the rooms and bring notes solo to those working at their lessons. The VVishing VVell is the operetta that brought out the talent our prima donnas and our Carusos. NVe are fortunate in having a musical instructor that has taken the interest in our school, like Miss Schachern has been doing during the time she has been with us., - rrstee gg E m -ff uflitlfvllliullll ' 0lllll1llllll. Athletic Review for l928-l929 Monaca High School's athletic year began at the end of August when Coach Berkman called for candi- dates for the football team. As usual, there was a rush at the beginning from all classes. Out of the first sixty that reported Coach Berkman moulded a team which 'lid much to offset the record of the previous year The season formally opened in the middle of Sep- tember with the boys as visitors at Ambridge. We took this encounter and then We were tamed down a little by the Beaver Falls Tigers the next Saturday at home. Freedom was played the next Saturday, only to find that neither team wanted a victory. We were still in the race for county honors till a team came down from Aliquippa COACH BERKMAN and set us back a notch and dimmed our hopes in the county race. Our spirits were raised a little when we won over Midland in a hard, close game in a sea of mud. We had our traditional rivals from Rochester to cope with next. If any game meant a great deal to the school and the public it was the Rochester gazne llut to our disappointment we were also defeated by them. Now we were ready for the great chance to get revenge for the defeat handed us the year before by Beaver. VVhen the game was called there wasn't a team in existence that could have beaten us and we certainly got our revenge by the time the last whistle had blown. The public expected us to enact the dope-spilling scene we had the year before, but dope cannot be upset always, and so we finished our season by losing to lfllwood in a rather dull game, just one week after the grid season had closed, Coaches Berkman and lleighey called for volunteers to make up our basket ball team, There was a wealth of both experienced and inexperienced material. The coaches picked out a team that was thought to be the section winners, if material and ability counted, However. we started our season a little early and a little sad by losing two gzrnes. one to Braddock and one to Beaver Falls, and then dropping two more to lill- wood. The XV. P. I. A. L. season started with Monaca playing Ambridge on our home floor and with Monaca taking the game. XfVe followed this up by losing to Harding, and then winning all the following games: Rochester, Leetsdale Midland, Freedom, and Beaver. Since we were in second place we had a good deal to work for in the second half of the XV. P. l. A. L, race which began with Amhridge. The team lost this game and were also defeated by Harding at Aliquippa. We won the remaining games with Leetsdale, Midland, Freedom. and Beaver, but lost a'post season game to Beaver Falls. Although this book was published before baseball season began we know that we will have a successful sea- son if the boys show the same spirit as they do in other sports and the school bac':s them up one hundred per- cent. All in all, Monaca enjoyed a highly successful athletic season. Almost as much interest is shown in these games between rival classes as between our opponents of other schools. This year turned out to be one of the most interesting of all the years we have had up to date. The season started out with the Eight-A Class in the lead in the Junior High, while in the High School, the Junior Class held reign the entire season. But that little Seventh Grade, Section 2, Room 12, defeated the Eight-A team, 9 to 5. Young D. Ulicny was the 'Astar of the team, scoring all nine points. The junior Class was so good that there was no need of any final game to determine the Winner of the high school championship. We, who witnessed these games, can truthfully say that they were as interesting as any of the inter-scholastic games. Spirit was shown by every class and home-room, and all rooted for their team until they went up in the lead, or down in defeat.
