When the parade was over, the cheerleaders led a pep rally near the parking lot and the winning floats were announced. The Junior class took first place with their float en- titled We're Coffin Up a Victory. The second- place Seniors' theme was We're Expecting a Vic- tory. Third place was given to the Sophomore class with the theme Get the Point? Last place, Beat Those Horny Blue Devils, belonged to the Freshman class. First place in the organization entries was the FHA- HERO float, Burn' Em! The second-place theme, Flatten the Blue Devils, belonged to the March- ing Monesse. National Honor Society entered the only car in the parade. That evening a snake dance started in the city park- ing lot and ended at the high school with a bonfire. After the bonfire, the football field became the center of attention when the Redskins met Peotone's Blue Devils. During a brief intermission in the varsity game, the traditional homecoming ceremony took place. Music and a routine was provided by the Marching Monesse, after which came the crowning of the 1972-73 Homecoming Queen, Miss Mary Storer es- corted by Don Murray. The queen's court and es- corts consisted of Conchita Damia, Dwight Colburn; Marcia Hiser, Floyd Mansberger; Chris Mollema, Mike Bourgeois; and Debbie St. Peter, Stan Zelhart. Attendants to the queen were: freshman Kathy Sted- man, Tim Cherry; sophomore Pearly Neblitt, Steve Sanders; and junior Phyllis Works, Don Douglas. Crowning Mary was the 1971-72 queen Mrs. Mary Tomaski Thompson and roses were presented by Brenda Cahill, Student Council president. Winding up the 1972 Homecoming activities was an open dance at the high school gym after the varsity game, in which the Redskins defeated the Blue Devils 24-13. Music was provided by Mind, Body and Soul. 1. Mary Storer was crowned home- coming queen by the 1971 queen, Mrs. Mary Thompson. 2. The Sen- ior float We're Expecting a Vic- tory won 2nd place. 3. The Queen candidates were Mary Storer, Deb St. Peter, Chris Mollema, Marcia Hiser, and Conchita Damia. 4. First place was awarded to the Jun- ior class float We're Coffin' Up a Victory. 5. Coach Jack Cherry discusses game plans with senior Jack Trudeau. 6. Burn 'Em , the FHA-Hero float received first in the club division. It was put on by the Speech Club and di- rected by their sponsor, Mr. Ken Thackeray. Presented on April 13- 14, three members of the cast completely won the hearts of the audience. Sophomore Maureen Mullady and Freshmen Myra Bal- ber and Dan Petersen captured the crowds with their comedy portrayals. 11 Juniors, Seniors trip through Washington A weekend of highs and lows describes the Junior- Senior class trip to Washington D. C. May 4, 5, and 6. One of the highlights was viewing the Washington Monument, which can be seen from all parts of the city. Even though there was a long line, a few waited for their chance to see the sights from the top. Other sights, such as the Arlington National Cemetery, the Capitol Building and Mount Vernon, were seen during the tour. A unique part of the trip was walking around George- town, a small town outside of Washington D. C. , made up of small specialty shops. Along with a swim party and a picnic lunch, the trip turned out to be one that all of the group wouldn't have missed for anything. There was one disappointment. Kevin O'Cull was un- able to make the trip because of an automobile acci- dent, the day of departure. “Colour My ” The king and queen of the 1973 prom, Colour My World , were Peter Schenk and Mary Storer. The Junior members of the court were Susan Cahill and Pat Zugg. Junior-Senior Prom 1973 15 Seniors 92 received diplomas at 97th commencement Numerous awards were given at Momence High School's 97th annual commencement exercises June 1. Among those included the valedictorian and salutator- ian awards earned by Connie Brinkmann and Floyd Mansberger. Connie Brinkmann and Sam Jordan re- ceived the American Legion Awards. Don Murray was awarded the Mark Schenk Athlete-Scholarship Award and the American Legion Auxiliary Award was given to Brenda Cahill. Mrs. Hilda Brown and Superintendent T. H. Gridiron men capture Kankakee Conference Champions of the Kankakee Valley Conference for the sec- ond straight year, the Redskins finished with one of the best records in recent years. After a slow 0-2 start the Cherry 8 White finish 6-3 and un- beaten in five conference games. The season looked poor as Aurora Marmion Military and Kankakee Eastridge held the Redskins scoreless while roll- ing up 46-0 and 8-0 wins. The Skins finally got things together winning six of the last seven and outscoring their opposition 86-27. The defense became known as The Wreckin' Crew in the area as they shut out Herscher, St. Anne, McNamara and Clifton Central. Two of the Redskin starters were named to the All-Area team, guard Randy Whisker on offense and defensive back Mike Jefferies. Team honors went to Lorenzo Riley, team man; Whisker, offensive player; Bruce Hunte, sportsmanship; Jefferies, de- fense; Jack Trudeau, most valuable; and Sam Jordan, most improved. 42 at Aurora Marmion KANKAKEE EASTRIDGE at Herscher at St. Anne PEOTONE at Bishop McNamara CLIFTON CENTRAL at Kankakee Westview CRETE-MON EE KVC Games 0-46 0- 8 6- 0 6- 0 24-13 16- 0 6- 0 2- 8 26- 6 KVC 5-0-0 All Games 6-3-0 The Wreckin' Crew MANTENO TOURNAMENT Lost ant Manteno Gibson City at Manteno CHICAGO HOLY TRINITY BEECHER ST. The 14-11 record was led by Darryl Walker, who scored 412 points and was selected by his teammates as the Most Valuable player. Walker also made the first team of the All-KVC squad. Don Murray was voted best sportsman and captured the free throw percentage award. Ron Kelly was the Most Im- proved player. At the beginning the season really was looking up as the Redskins led the conference with a 3-0 record. The squad ended up in fourth place with a 4-4 record dropping four straight before beating Peotone. Highlight of the year was the Manteno Thanksgiving Tournament where the Redskins record was 2-1, the same as Gibson City and Manteno. A point spread was used to decide the victor and a three-point difference gave the title to Gibson and third place to the Skins. They also came in second at Herscher in the KVC tourney. St. Anne, who finished fourth in the State Tournament, defeated the Skins for the title. The Scalpers defeated Kankakee Eastridge for the first time, 42-37, in early January. 47 48 Cinderman paced by individual stars Track hit an all time low at Momence the past year but certain individuals improved what might have been a disastrous year. The Redskins did not win a meet but Jun- ior Mike Fitzpatrick set a shot put record by throwing the 12-pound ball 50' 11 . Mike was one of the few consistent blue ribbon winners for the Skins with his throws in the discus and shot put. The Redskins finished fifth in the confer- ence tussle at Central and sixth in the Irish Relays. Jim Anstrom, Mike Cherry and the two-mile relay team also rated high in the area. The Redskins lost their first four outings be- fore Trudeau pitched a no-hitter against Grant Park. In the District Tournament Momence drew Kankakee Eastridge. The ca- reer Center first opened to the students in September, 1971. To meet and compete with the problem of special- ized training is the purpose of the Center. The ob- jective of the Center is to provide a variety of oc- cupational training programs for students who have a strong interest in occupational training. High school juniors and seniors may choose from such areas as Business Education, Medical Occupations, Public Service, and Trade and Industry. H. Bartholomew, Superintendent of Schools in Momence since 1953, announced graduation night that he will be retiring sometime during the 1973-74 school year. Charles Schmett of Beecher City has been named as his successor. During his term as superintendent, Mr. Bartholomew has viewed changes in many aspects of Momence's school system. The high school's enrollment along with the pro- fessional staff has more than doubled. The newest changes that have taken place are the addition to the Junior High School and the building of the Je Neir Elementary School. The new total of eight buildings is a big difference in comparison to the two buildings available in 1953. The Momence School District will suffer a great loss with the retirement of Mr. Bartholomew, and even though he will begin his retirement next year, his presence will still be felt for many years to come. 106 Principal resigns after two years In retrospect, Mr. Daren Cox feels that his last two years at MHS was a tremendous education. He says that he has learned more about education in his two years here than he did in his previous ten years of teaching because of a more varied student body and different problems. Mr. Cox feels that the most press- ing problem facing MHS is the curriculum and its lack of relevance. He says the curriculum is college oriented but less than 50% of our graduates go to college and even they aren't adequately prepared. The vocational department, says Mr. Cox, needs to be expanded to fit the majority's needs. Mr. Cox will be leaving MHS and taking the posi- tion of Director of Vocational Education at Living- ston Area Vocational Center in Pontiac next year. 107 Two assistants added to staff 108 MR. JIM ROHE, assistant superintendent MR. ED WOLFE, assistant principal. Momence Board of Education Members of the Momence Board of Education are (SEATED) DENNIS MORSE, ELMER ZELHART, FRANK JOHNSON, ELWOOD LINE, T.H. BARTHOLOMEW. STANDING ARE MIKE HEMPHILL, LEROY HIGH. Upon her arrival in 1962, Mrs. Brown changed the school's foreign lan- guage from Latin to Spanish. She attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa and was graduated from the University of Iowa. Mrs. Brown's warm smiles, friendly greetings and her I care attitude will long be missed by both the faculty and the student body in years to come. The MONESSE staff would like to wish Senora Brown the best of luck and remind her she is always welcome at MHS.
