Remaining approximately unchanged, Momence High School graduated its first senior class in June 1937. Using $135,000 as a grant from the federal government, the townspeople voted a bond issue to fund the remainder of the $302,000. During mid-March of 1937, school was recessed for one week to facilitate the move from the old building. Hosting an open house for the general public, the faculty and staff presented the new building to over 1400 people. With all the red tape cut, classes officially began in the new Momence Community High School on Monday, March 22, 1937. Internally the building has been changed and re-vamped, but from an exterior viewpoint one sees the building unaltered and appearing as it did thirty-five years ago. Mr. Bartholomew, Superintendent of Schools in Momence since 1953, has seen the district school population more than double to the pres- ent 1,936 in that period of time, with the high school enrollment increasing from 247 to 542. At the same time the professional staff grew to 93 from 41, and the district budget to $2,000,000 from $300,000. During the com- ing school year, students will be housed in 4 permanent buildings and 3 relocatables, in con- trast to the 2 buildings available in 1953. Cur- ricular offerings have been greatly expanded. New programs include kindergarten, remedial reading, and the participation in the Kankakee Area Special Education Cooperative and the Kankakee Area Career Center. Looking to the future, Mr. Bartholomew said, As the Momence community continues to grow, further expansion and changes in the educational system will be necessary. Educa- tion must keep pace with the constantly increas- ing demands of the complex world in which our graduates will take their place.
