Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1972 volume:

CHANGE Change is an everpresent part of any society if that society is going to prosper or even survive. To remain locked in time, unchanging, is to stag- nate and to die. Any period of time usually will foster change, but it would appear the '70's is the now time for the schools of Momence as well as the community. Even before a person enters the city proper, one can see changes. Pre- viously the banks of the Kankakee River were overgrown by bushes and trees to say nothing of the litter that not only covered the banks but also floated downstream. Even though not yet hospital clean, the appearance of the river has improved because of the removal of the undergrowth and the litter. In the downtown area the burst of remodeled store fronts and the open- ing of new business firms and the expansion of existing ones bears proof that Momence is on the move. Momence High School has been innovative, also. The adoption of the new schedule has meant changes and improvement for students and teachers alike. Elimination of study halls, long a thorn in everyone's side, is among the more noticeable. Longer class periods and the emergence of many new semester courses are also definitely positive steps. Alternatives for the stu- dents have also been provided by the Co-Op Program and the Area Career Center. There have been many changes also in school-related activities. The production of films and the increased athletic prowess of the basket ball teams are both big steps. It would be foolish to say there are still not other things that will need revamping; however, the move is on. Progress, the lifeblood of a society, continues in Momence. Remaining approximately unchanged, Momence High School graduated its first senior class in June 1937. Using $135,000 as a grant from the federal government, the townspeople voted a bond issue to fund the remainder of the $302,000. During mid-March of 1937, school was recessed for one week to facilitate the move from the old building. Hosting an open house for the general public, the faculty and staff presented the new building to over 1400 people. With all the red tape cut, classes officially began in the new Momence Community High School on Monday, March 22, 1937. Internally the building has been changed and re-vamped, but from an exterior viewpoint one sees the building unaltered and appearing as it did thirty-five years ago. Parish ADMINISTRATION Mr. Bartholomew, Superintendent of Schools in Momence since 1953, has seen the district school population more than double to the pres- ent 1,936 in that period of time, with the high school enrollment increasing from 247 to 542. At the same time the professional staff grew to 93 from 41, and the district budget to $2,000,000 from $300,000. During the com- ing school year, students will be housed in 4 permanent buildings and 3 relocatables, in con- trast to the 2 buildings available in 1953. Cur- ricular offerings have been greatly expanded. New programs include kindergarten, remedial reading, and the participation in the Kankakee Area Special Education Cooperative and the Kankakee Area Career Center. Looking to the future, Mr. Bartholomew said, As the Momence community continues to grow, further expansion and changes in the educational system will be necessary. Educa- tion must keep pace with the constantly increas- ing demands of the complex world in which our graduates will take their place. D A R E N L. C O X Daren Cox comes to Momence from La Harpe, Illinois, where he was principal for two years at La Harpe High School, He pre- viously taught at Pontiac High School and Cor- nell High School. Mr. Cox did his undergrad- uate and graduate work at the U of I, Western, and Illinois State. He and his wife Marcia have three children; Beth, Neal, and Mark. Mr. Cox's hometown is Fairbury, Illinois. About change, Mr. Cox said, ”1 believe that the change essential in public school edu- cation today must be one of modification, not complete transformation. By this 1 mean that certain phases of the total educational program must undergo some revision and updating to meet the present day needs of our complex so- ciety. An educational system isn't worth a great deal if it teaches young people how to make a living and doesn't teach them how to live. To the class of '72, Mr. Cox says, Jonus was an ancient Roman deity who had two faces and could look both ways at the same time. You may have wished that you, too, had the ability to see clearly both the future and the past as you face the many problems and rewards of your adult life. However, this is not possible and therefore you must apply that knowledge which you have ac- quired in the past twelve years to meaningful so- lutions in your everyday living and life goals. DAVID J. SCHINDLBECK Mr. Schindlbeck, assistant principal, is from Aurora, Illinois. He attended Winston Churchill College and Illinois State University, receiving a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Educational Administration. He is presently completing degree requirements for the certificate of Advanced Study in Pupil Services. His hobbies are athletics, woodworking, and counseling young people. Of change, Mr. Schindlbeck says, Nothing remains in a status quo position - every- thing is fluid. Everything changes - rules, life, laws, society. Changes are ever pres- ent. One must adapt or he is lost.” SCHOOL BOARD STANDING: Mr. Bartholomew, Superintendent; Elmer Zelhart, Ronald Clark, Elwood Line, Dennis Morse. SEATED: Bernice Lipnik, Frank Johnson, Leroy High. Without them the high school library could not function. 83 SPEECH CLUB During the last school year, the Speech Club ventured into a number of activities, both traditional and original. In January 1971, the Speech Club left its typical surroundings of theater and spotlight and entered the kitchen for its first original operation, a spaghetti supper. Conceived as a money making project and executed by Mrs. Koranda and student help, the spaghetti supper may be well on its way as a year- ly tradition. The spring play, which contained what may be Momence's largest cast, previewed a recently written play, Curtain Going Up. Dealing with contemporary school life and situations, it showed the trials and tribulations of a first year teacher attempting to direct her first high school play. Curtain Going Up proved to be interesting and relevant to the cast of twenty-five. Bringing the 70-71 season to a close, Speech Club produced its first feature-length film. Anastasia, a story of historical fact which has been dramatized into a stage play and Hollywood pro- duction, provided approximately fifty students with a glimpse of what the making of a film entails. Shooting on location, researching the historical angles, and the filming itself proved both education- al and interesting to the cast and crew. Using Anastasia as the subject of introduction, Speech Club opened the 71-72 season with an as- sembly for the freshmen and other interested students. Boasting a total membership of approximately 90 students, Speech Club launched the 1937 classic, You Can't Take It With You. A cast composed primarily of freshmen and sophomores with a few returning veterans indicated a bright future for stage productions. The probable highlight of the 71-72 season will be Speech Club's second film, yet to be titled, which will be completed in mid January of 1972. At the time of this writing complete plans are inde- finite, but the film is tentatively outlined to include approximately 70 students and to last ninety minutes. Undoubtedly Speech Club is proving to be one of the busiest and most quickly growing organiza- tions at Momence High School. 84 AREA CAREER CENTER STUDENTS 1st ROW: C. Mollema, Health Occupations; K. Born in Toulouse, they are the youngest of a family of 10. One of the many differences they have noticed between France and the United States is size. French towns are more compact than ours, and cars and trucks are much smaller. Our schools are different, also. They attend school from 8 to 12 noon, then from 2 to 7 o'clock. Not only are their hours long, but they must provide their own transportation because there are no school buses. There is no lunch program, either. The big difference, they say, is that it is a lot easier to make friends here than it is there. 126 THE THREE MUSKATEERS THE ENDS MAY ALL YOUR CHANGES BE FOR THE BETTER — 1972 YEARBOOK STAFF A special thanks to Mr. K.
