“
In Memory °f Ronald Gustafson 7 shall remember while the light reaches yet and in the night-time I shall not forget. An average, unselfish American boy. This is the best way to describe Ron. While many of his accomplishments in life might have gone unrewarded, he is remembered by teachers and students alike for his amia- ble personality and his assistance with various school programs and organizations. He was primarily interested in the drum and bugle corps, to which he devoted much of his time and effort. He most cer- tainly will be remembered for his tireless enthusiasm and dedication. Dedication Mr. Ernest Monk There is no great genio us without some touch of madness. ” We, the 1970 Monesse staff, wish to express our appreciation to Mr. Monk for the sincere interest he has shown in all of the students at Momence High School. He has earned our respect for his honest, straight-forward manner and for his sense of humor as he has helped us meet the challenges of our school careers. 3 Superintendent - MR. T. H. Mireya Castillero, a member of the senior class, is staying with her uncle Jorge Calvo. Her purpose in com- ing to Momence was to understand and speak English better. She plans to return to her home in Panama this summer for a short visit. Later she hopes to return to the U.S. to work. From her we have learned much about Panama. Gwen White spent two and one-half months last summer in Medellin, Columbia, as our exchange student. She stayed in the home of Lya Cardona, an English teacher in Medellin. During her stay she visited many very different places in Columbia, which included the huge capital city of Bogota, a few days spent on a small hacien- da or farm in the mountains outside Medel- lin, and a week on the shores of the Car- ibbean Sea. In summing up her experi- ences she says: It was a wonderful exper- ience. I wouldn't have traded it for any- thing. This trip showed me the difference between reading about a certain place and visiting it. Foreign The fourth exchange student to come to M. H.S. was from Guate- mala City, Guatemala, C.A. Estuardo Gregorio Erazo arrived in November and lived with the Mc- Dowell family during his three- months' stay. He was fifteen and studying to be an architect. He brought not only a touch of the Spanish-American culture, but al- so an excellent knowledge of the English language. Because of his knowledge of our language, he was able to teach us much about Guate- mala and Central America. He was one of the most out-going students we have had and became very well- known and popular in our school. Exchange Students 96 ESTUARDO GREGORIO ERAZO iUNCOMMON VALOR. The 1970 season for the Redskins didn't meet preseason expectation. The injury-plagued Redskins finished the sea- son with a 3-6 record with wins over Hersher, St. Anne, and Hanover-Central. The inexperienced team included only five lettermen and thus 1970 sould be a better season. Four Momence players were named to the Kankakee Valley Conference All Stars. Leon Ross was named halfback and Carl Brinkmann center on the offensive team. Robin Anstrom and Willie Rowe made the defensive team, Robin as halfback and Willie as center. On a local level the team named Leon Ross as most valuable offensive player and Willie Rowe and Carl Brink- mann as most valuable defensive players. Willie was also considered the best team man. Robin Anstrom and Carl Brinkmann were the most valuable seniors. Carl was also named the most improved player and was given the good sportsmanship award. The co-captains for the 1970 Redskin will be Jim Piekarczyk, Bill Ford, Jim Shegog. and Tony Lampley. The mile relay team of David Zeglis, Larry O'Brien, Mike Engles, and Robin Anstrom led the All-Area track honor roll for the year and won the race in the Journal's All-Area track meet. Varsity Baseball 1969 The 1969 varsity baseball team had one of the school’s finest seasons with a 13-6 record. The Redskins were champions of the Kankakee Valley Conference with a 7-0 record, highlighted by a 4-2 victory over the 1968 champion, Bishop McNamara. Not possessing overwhelming speed, the team depended on teamword, good pitching, and good fielding. The outstanding teamword was a result of hard work, desire, and many long hours of practice. The excellent pitching was provided by Steve Dennison who had a 10-5 record with 4 shutouts and 2 one-hitters. The fielding was provided by Dave Schenk, Claude Harmon, Scott Preston, Wayburn Walls, and Willie Rowe. It is hoped the upcoming freshmen and sophomores will strive to con- tinue the winning tradition of the 1969 team. 104 Golf 1969 FIRST ROW; Mr. Willard, Coach; Rick Baker, Bill Phelps, Jeff Johnson, Doug DeVries, Jim Schopf, Jayme Hibbs.
