% The senior class would like to honor a teacher who has always done his best to give his students a compre- hensive education. He is not just a teacher, but a friend who tries to understand the students’ point and who takes an interest in our outside activities. To show our appre- ciation of his efforts, the Class of 1965 dedicates its yearbook to Mr. Richard Carter. I DEDICATION Lester Dumontelle, Jr. A Frank B. Johnson F. R. FOOTBALL FACTS Under the guidance of Coach Jack Cherry, the Momence Redskins enjoyed their third consecutive winning season, posting a record of six wins and three defeats. The Redskins combined an explosive offense and stubborn defense in bringing about their most successful season in many years. Junior QB Dale Dionne sparked the Redskins with brilliant play-calling and pinpoint passing. Most of Dionne's aerials were directed to Senior end John Zeglis. Dionne was an all state nominee, and Zeglis was the only unanimous choice for all conference. Jim Matthias was the Redskins' most consistent break-away runner, pacing the Redskins with ten touchdowns. Barry Jepsen combined fine running with his abilities as a pass receiver to total thirty-one points for his team. In addition to a fine backfield, Momence had many top flight linemen who were able to open the holes for the backs on offense and block these holes on defense. Frank Koranda was an all conference choice for the Redskins. Captain Jack Snapp was a val- uable asset at either offensive guard or defensive end. Bill McMillen, a new comer to Momence’s team, developed into one of the finest linebackers in this area. Other play- ers who contributed much to the success of the Redskins were Tyrone Williams, Frank Young, Dale Campbell, and Corky Milner in the backfield and linemen Chuck Case, Mike Verdun, Stan Major, Jerry Kiger, Robbie Ilium, and Teddy Brown. Perhaps the highlight of the football season was the Redskins' 46-6 victory over West- ville in our homecoming game. After six consecutive triumphs, the 'Skins outplayed a strong Central eleven, but were defeated 26-19. Having lost all hope for a Conference Championship, the team lost its final two games to Bishop Macnamara and West Lock- port. Despite these final three defeats, the Redskins enjoyed a season that made their school and their town proud of them. The 1964-65 Surprising Redskins, under Coach Ellsworth Hartzell, became the most successful Redskin quintet in five years. This year's Momence cagers compiled a record of 11 wins and 15 losses. Momence proved to be an exciting tournament team. Highlights of the season were Momence's two second place finishes in the KVC and District tournaments. In each tournament, the Redskins upset highly regarded Herscher and Beecher to gain the finals before bowing to peotone and St. Anne. Momence hit another high point on the night of the Morocco game when they scored 92 points to establish a new school scoring record. Five seniors and a sophomore were the bulwark of this year's team. Top scorer, senior Roger Denny led the Momence attack with an average of 21 points, and along with promising sophomore Mark Schenk, accounted for most of the Skins scoring punch. Much of the Redskins success can be attributed to their tight man-to-man defense anchored by senior John Zeglis. Many of the rebounds that fell Momence's way were snared by high-springing John Craft. The offense was ably directed by fiery guard Rick Willard. One of the best sixth men in the conference, Robbie Ilium, provided the depth Momence so often needed. Three redskins were voted to the All-KVC Tournament Team. Roger Denny was named to the first team, while Mark Schenk (the only sophomore mentioned) and John Zeglis were selected for Honorable Mention. Though the record was not impressive, the individual performances were noteworthy. Terry Arp and Bill Dennis were the top hitters. The season opened with a double-header. Beecher took the final game and the second game was a 3 to 2 win for the 'Skins. Momence played Kankakee and Peotone before their second win at Grant Park. The final 4 games resulted in defeats for the Redskins. r- 3ft - ■ i 'v. s: - •ii - 58 ORGANIZATIONS MONESSE STAFF Editor: Mimi Benoit Business Manager: John Zeglis Layout Editor: Laura McLean Sports Editors: Roger Denny, Mike Verdun, Rick Willard Copy Editors: Lynda West, Janie Lusk Typists: Sue Kurth, Pam Wille, Virginia Depoister, Gloria Carpenter, Mary Ann Strassenburg, Debby Gore Advisor: Mr. Ferrell 60 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY STANDING: J. The members of this organization realize that it is their duty to stimulate the desire for these qualities in all the pupils of Momence High School. We, the 1964-65 members of the N. H. S., have worked hard for our organization, and we hope that our lives will be an example of the principles of the National Honor Society. The seventh grade this year was of a more normal” size. The total enroll- ment of 233 in the junior high points up the fact that the new building is really needed. These junior high classes will be the last to occupy the high school building. There was an extra teacher. Mrs. Patricia Petty, who taught part of the seventh and eighth grade English this year. Student Council members were active this year. Part of the proceeds from a bake sale was used to bring an assembly film, The Prince and The Pauper to the junior high. The remainder of the money was used to purchase scarlet felt monitor badges for those boys and girls assisting with noon hour hall duty. Members of this year's stu- dent council were Cathy Case, Cheryl Smith, Paulette Williams, Danny Trudeau, Scott Preston. Howard Kendall, Gay Slingerland, Gary McKimm, Marsha Hyrup, Jef- frey Johnson, Larry O'Brien, and Linda Strassenburg. Our Spelling team this year was chosen by competition and was composed of eighth graders Joan Bishir, Sandra Cronk, Jon Dennis, and Paula Fawver. Alternates were Re- becca Coulter and Janyce Hibbs. These students competed in the conference spelling contest at Beecher. Athletically speaking, it was another good year for the junior high. The seventh grade Papooses won the Kan-Will Seventh Grade Conference championship with a record of 7 wins and 1 loss. They finished second in the seventh grade tourney held at Beecher. Their over-all record for the season was 9 wins and 6 losses. All of the losses, except one, were games outside the conference. Twenty-one boys were active all sea- son. The starting five for most of the season were Richard Holloway, Ron Riley, For- wards-. Orlando Trevino, Center; and Carl Brinkman and Wille Rowe, guards. Scoring honors for the season were won by Orlando with 119 points. The Little Redskins of the eighth grade won the Kan-Will Junior High Conference for the second consecutive year with an 8-0 record for this season. Their entire sea- son record was 15 wins and 2 losses. The boys won second place in the annual tourna- ment at Grant Park. The first team regulars this year were Cremer, Preston, Mann, Schenk, and Harmon. Claude Harmon led in scoring with a season total of 203 points. He was followed by Verle Mann with 139 points. Scott Preston won the free-throw championship trophy with an average of . 686. The most exciting game played all season was the 23-22 victory over Peotone on January 13 which gave us the conference championship. Prospects for track this year have looked good, with Cremer and Holloway in the dashes and Mann and Harmon in the weights. The conference meet was held in Peotone. Baseball was the fall sport, and the junior high had a record of 3 wins and 2 losses The strike-out king was David Schenk. Leading batters were Harmon, Graves, Tatto, Jensen, and B. Trudeau. The usual line-up was: pitcher, Harmon; catcher, Schenk; 1st base, Harmon; 2nd base. Graves; 3rd base, Preston; short-shop, Tatto; outfielders, B. Trudeau, D. Trudeau, Jensen, and Bredemier. The cheerleaders who made all these lively affairs were Jill Simpson, Nancy Lusk, Donna Contois, and Debra Jacobsen from the seventh grade. Alternate was Valli Faw- ver. From the eighth grade, the cheerleaders were Cathy Case, Paula Fawver, Cheryl Smith, Garlene Odle, with Linda Kinney ancf Cheryl Hyrup as alternates. Paula Faw- ver served as cheerleader captain and Debra Jacobsen as assistant captain.
