SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Throughout our high school years, the Class of I960 has shared numerous enriching experiences. We entered Momence High as green freshmen, unsure of ourselves and awed by the juniors and seniors who possessed confidence and poise; however, as the years passed, we too became, supposedly, these self-assured seniors. With only a few short months left before we graduate, we can look back and reminisce our good times and bad........... the freshman concessions at the football games; our sophomore carnival which always proves to be more than interesting; our junior year, during which we purchased new class rings; and our senior year highlighted with incidents involving fire- crackers, painted sidewalks, our first place senior class home- coming float, and the unfortunate accident which befell our classmate Ed VanSwol. We, as of yet, have not decided on a class trip, but we are working hard and hoping for a senior trip which will truly be a climax to the chest of memor- ies in our final year at Momence Community High School. 22 •V Lester Young President Jack Kurtz Vice-President Bruce McDonald Secretary Terry Sherwood Treasurer Nancy Bishir Clyde Brown Perley Farmer Patricia Boudreau Fern Finley Jill Bartholomew Kay Carpenter Mary Kay Davis Joyce Hibbs Doris Bradley Bonnie Doud Lynn Brower Kenny Case i June Du Frain Cheryl Hyrup Henry Hollis Gary Illum Thomas Jensen Joan Kiger Karen Kipp Gary Johnson Thomas Lattz Jackie Jurgerson Dorothy Lauridson Faith Kibbons Richard Lind Joseph Longtin William Mead Alan Luhman Ambrose Marcorte Nancy Martin Robert Mazur Jack Metz Charles Mittons Michael Mullady Vicki Newman Robert Niedert Joyce O’Lena Barbara Ownbey Carla Petro David Pine Linda Race James Schweigert Dean Rasmussen Carol Simpson Ronald Sanders Randy Scheiding Robert Smith 0 i Joan Skaggs Sharon Schomer William Smith Donald Steele Richard Warren Nancy Therien James Weakley James West Dale Wheeler Linda Wheeler Marvin Whitten Robert Alvis Barbara Axsom Joy Bade Bonita Behrends Nancy Benn David Bishir Hazel Bradley David Bramer Beatrice Brister Dianna Brown Judy Bukowski Alvin Burdick Bruce Butler Judy Cantway Shirley Case Jack Clifton Tom Curl Sandy DeGrauw Susan Carpenter Gerald Denton Oliver Dorn Nancy Duguay Ernestine Edwards Kay Ewers Leslie Fieleke Janet Fleming Edward Gilbert Jim Hess Kathy Lindstrom John Jonkman Suzanne Lindstrom Dennis McGill Shirley Hutson Leonard McGill John Hazekamp Gloria Johnson Ifei Tom Konopacke June Mitchell Kathy Francis Carolyn Henson Harold Johnson Robert Lambert Judy Martens Tom Morse Gerald Nichols William Nichols Mervin Schweigert Michael Sherwood Donna Spencer Margaret Sweeney Nancy Washington Hans Weissbohn George Riem Aleatha Smith Erwyne Williams '33 W Phillip Van Swol James Williams Michael Snapp Richard Van Vleck Kathleen Wyant John Anstrom David Beaupre Carol Benn Patricia Benoit Gloria Bessert Daniel Billadeau David Billadeau Nancy Blank Paul Bouchard Patricia Boudreau Virginia Brower Judith Burdick Melvin Burdick Robert Crawford Larry Cremer Linda Cremer Donald Cromwell Ken DePoister Robert Dexter Cindy DeYoung Jack Dorn Jean Long Wesley Minor Michael Fritz Robert Gero Orland Higginbotham Janice Jackson Bruce Konzelman Angela McDurmon William Newman Gerald Jonkman Sharon Fawver John Hermann James Hollis Phyllis Koble Frank Newberry James Griggs Nancy High Jerry Koons Daniel Marcotte Harland O’Cull Beverly Hazekamp Alfred Hollis Eileen Klassen Cheryl Kuetemeyer Karen Martin Thomas O’Cull Ronald Hopper Delores Koenig Ronald Longtin Judith Pachner Calvin Parks John Parks Thomas Parrish Judy Prairie Karen Prairie Geraldine Prather Marla Ritter Bobbie Sain Roger Schwartz Frances Schweigert Joe Sharkey John Schenk Alfred Sanders r Westley Sherrick Robert Wrenn Barbara Yott cfiHSQWZH LEFT TO RIGHT. MOMENCE KAN-WILL CO-CHAMPS FOOTBALL 1959 The Momence Redskins, coached by Richard Rabbin, had a moderately successful season as they compiled a 2 and 5 record. The Redskins showed sparks of greatness as they rapidly improved under the direction of our new coach. The first game of the season found the young Redskins pitted against one of the better teams in state, the Watseka Warriors. The Warriors experience proved to be to much for Coach Rabbitt's boys to handle as they lost 61-13. Momence had its bright moments as Lester Young, junior half- back, eluded the entire Watseka eleven to score the first Momence touchdown. Bill Campbell, a senior lineman, undoubtedly had a dream come true when he grabbed a fumble and ran forty yards for Momence's second and last touchdown. Our second game was somewhat of a disappointment to everyone concerned as we lost 18-6 to the rugged St. Anne Cardinals. Bill Hartman, senior fullback, crashed through the St. Anne line as he averaged 4.5 yards per carry and got two tackles. Two other seniors, Ron Funderburk and Rob Martin, also played outstanding football as they cut down St. Anne's defense with their hard blocking. Momence still wasn't playing the football they were capable of as the Redskins lost 18-0 to Crete. Many unnecessary miscues frequented this game, and the Redskins fell for the third con- secutive time. Two juniors, Bob Baker, fullback, and Gary Ilium, center, played heads up foot- ball for Momence. Momence had its best homecoming in years as the Redskins caught fire and beat a good Hersher team. The Redskins hit hard and ran even harder as they won 12-6. Carroll Scamp Bricker, an excellent senior halfback, spearheaded this victory with his fine running and tackling. Scamp, acting Captain, must have been inspired by the part he played in the half- time activities. Our defense was everything it was suppose to be as Al Bydalek led Momence's defensive unit with five tackles. Bruce McDonald assisted Al many times and also played a good game. A hot Momence team played its best game of the year as they slaughtered the Gilman Owls 33-0. Gayle Behrends, a fast and hard-hitting senior halfback made our backfield complete when he returned to the lineup to lead the Redskins in total yardage gained. Gayl lead the team in offense and defense and his presence on the field greatly contributed to Momences' success. Terry Hibbs, an exceptionally fast guard, again sparked Momences' defense and as usual made a few seemingly impossible tackles. Ernie Hart, Jim West, and Terry Sherwood also played a fine game as the Redskins won their second straight. Momences string of two straight victories was stopped as the Redskins fell to the Central Comets. Our offense was not effective, but the defensive team, following the lead of Keith Sharky, senior end, held the strong Central eleven to three touchdowns. Jack Kurtz, junior quarterback, who did a fine job of directing the Redskins all season, attempted to spark an otherwise impotent offense but to no avail. St. Patrick Central defeated Momence 27-0 in what proved to be the last game of the sea- son due to the cancellation of the Wilmington contest. Momence was unable to contain the speedy Irish backs, but the game was much closer than the score indicates. Jerry Brooke and Henry Hollis kept Momence in the game with their exceptional play. Tom Hess, senior, played his best game of the year as his long booming punts continually prevented further Irish scores. Coach Jim Harmison's little Redskins had an excellent season as their only loss was a surprise upset at the hands of the Watseka fresh-soph. Gayl Behrends was voted the Most Valuable Player by his teammates following the last game of the season. Terry Hibbs and Bill Campbell, stalwarts of the Redskin line, were named to the second all Wil Ro Kee Conference team. Gayle and Al Bydalek made the third all Wil Ro Kee team. Congratulations to a fine football team. 48 FRESH-SOPH FOOTBALL FRONT ROW: Joe Sharkey, Bill Peterson, Alfred Hollis, Lessley Fieleke, Ronald Griffen, David Beaupre, James Mason, John Parks, James Hess. These were the boys and this was the team that finished the 59-60 basketball season with a 13 and 11 record. Coach Willard's quintet started slowly, losing their first 5 games, but lived up to pre-season expectations as they won their next six. The Lemont Holiday Tourna- ment was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year as the Redskins walked over Lemont, and then in a surprising upset beat highly regarded Carl Sandburg to take home the first championship trophy Momence has had in many years. The inspired Redskins fulfilled one of Coach Willard's dreams as they knocked off St. Pats (Gayle got 25 points, hitting 11 for 15 from the field) and Bradley in the same week. Momence was on the go as they entered the Kan-Will Tournament. After beating Herscher, the Redskins were upset by Gilman, but came back strong to beat St. Anne in a sudden death over-time, Bill Shanholtz scoring the winning basket. The remainder of the season was in comparison uneventful as the Redskins won 7 of their 11 last games. Throughout the year, Jump'in Joe Cryer played excellent ball for Momence and averaged 17.5 points per game in Wil-Ro-Kee competition. Bill Shanholtz won't forget the Manteno game because he got 33 points to set a school scoring record. Gayl Behrends could usually be depended upon to play heads up ball for Momence especially if Mary was present. Bob Smith enjoyed the basket- ball season for more than only one reason. Ask him about cheerleaders. Bob also won the free throw trophy. And last, but certainly not least, is Carroll Bricker. Scamp was the playmaker for the Redskins quintet, and he also led the way on fast breaks. A Regional championship would complete an excellent season.
