Text from Pages 1 - 64 of the 1954 volume:

We, the class of 1954, do dedicate this Monesse to the memory of Dr. Charles Ruch, who gave so generously of his time, service, and interest. He was truly representative of the medical pro- fession whose services over the years have contributed greatly to our school and community. 2 School Board T. H. Bartholomew; President, Theodore M. Although this is by far the smallest number of students in any of the four classes, any senior can tell you that their class has accomplsiehd a good deal. One of the first acts of the class was to determine a senior administration to lead all thirty-eight through the final year in school. The honor fell upon four boys. Gene Dionne became president; Ronnie Hayhurst, the vice-president; Jerry Usher, the secretary; and Dave Hess, the treasurer. One of the fall duties of the class was to present the annual homecoming. This year they tried to make it a bigger and better spectacle by urging each of the four classes to enter a float in an afternoon parade and in a halftime cele- bration. This, together with a post-game dance, made the year's football homecoming one to remember. Creditfor the success of the seniors can be extended to their sponsors who led them through four years of school. This year's sponsors were: Mrs. Griest, Mr. Burch, Mr. Poorbaugh, and Mr. Tomasello. I turn- ed on the Amateur Hour first and saw SHIRLEY LE- CUYER, a talented young soprano. She wasn't bad at all. Contestant Number Two was JESSIE MARR, an acrobat. That was enough of the program. I switched to Channel 4 and saw DON ZEILENGA, emcee of Zoo Parade. Wild BILL HALLWAS is the nejct program I watched. I love cowboys so after lunch I tuned in on Cisco SANDERS. While I was glancing througlCtj e T. V. Forecast, my wife told me that CAROL SANSTROM and JANE SCHILLING were on Strike It Rich last night trying to earn money for their orphanage. My wife never misses that program although Groucho GLOW is her favorite. We decided to watch Super Circus since my son would hear of nothing else. The first act wasn't bad, a trapeze duo, MARY LOU DENTON and CLYDE BLOOMQUIST. The girl held three men in midair by her teeth while hanging by her toes. Next a weightlifter, HERB THOMPSON thrilled the audience. The next two acts, a woman swordswallower, MARGIE FITE, and a contortionist, MARGIE WARDINSKI, were too much for me. I turned off the set and took a nap. My kids woke me with their complaining that there wasn't anything on TV that they like, not on Sunday afternoon anyway. When I asked what they do like, they named Howdy Doody with RONNIE HAYHURST as emcee, JIM BARNES as Superman, and Uncle TONY BELLUSCI in Noontime Comics. Five-year-old Debbie loves RACHEL BRADLEY'S Ding Dong School while Bill Jr. likes wrestling. He told me about the fight between LOIS Strangler LARSON and BERNICE, the Battler, KINGSLEY who are the biggest enemies in ladies' wrestling. Both kids like the I Love Rosie Show starring FRED and ROSE MARIE LAUE. Another favorite is Mr. Peepers starring EARL SCHOEFFNER. After supper one of my regulars is the Ed Sullivan Show. JIM HIBBS, the man with a smile, is substituting for Ed. He had two won- derful ballet dancers in CRAIG KENNEDY and CHARLENE AUSTIN. Jim interveiwed BOB BLEYLE, coach of the first girls' professional football team. Also on the program was the world's greatest harpist, NORMA HENERBERG. Later all programs were blacked out for a speech by our President, PRISCILLA BALTHAZOR. Quite a speaker, our first lady president! at 9:30 I tuned in What's My Line. CLAR- ENCE GRAHAM, a hairdresser, was the first contestant followed by BETTY JOHNSON, a tugboat operator. The mystery guest was ALICE CLAUSSEN better known as My Friend Irma. The last contestant was GUY MORTIMER, a grave digger. At 10:00 came the nightly feature at our house, JERRY USHER, the weatherman. A movie was next up, The Love Affairs of Margaret starring FRED BORGGREN and DAVE HESS, both of whom fought for the love of MARGARET SIMPSON. Have to hit the hay now, my wife said, so I can get up and watch CLAYTON STUDER in the A to Z of Cookery and GENE DIONNE, the Reduce-to-Music Man. So ends a Sunday at the HALPIN residence. Class officers include; Ronnie Davis, President; Artie Gelino, Vice-President; and Carol Baker, Sec- retary-treasurer. The Junior s have charge of the big school dance s, which is the policy every year, so that they are able to enlarge the class treasury for their Senior year. This year they sponsored an Armistice Day Dance, a Christmas Dance , a Valentine's Dance and the Prom. Class sponsors are Miss Brown, Mr. Hanson, and Mr. Fahs- Miss Brown’s Advisory Group This page was sponsored by THE WHITE FRONT STORE. 16 Mr. Fahsbender’s Advisory Group Mr. Hanson’s Advisory Group This page was sponsored by ORANGE KIST BOTTLING CO. 17 Sophomores You can't go pushing those sophomores around; They learned much as 'freshies and in knowledge abound. When they came to school on the first day, It was decided to get right underway. They figured if they were to get much done, Of presidents they should have about one, And this, somebody whom all adored, A handsome young man named Hilton Ward. To electing vice-presidents, they were prone, So they put in a fellow called Carl Krone. They thought someone should keep notes too. So in order that they might be taboo, Secretary Pat Barnes kept history While Gary Thyfault watched the treasury. In order to gain both money and fame, They sold programs at each home football game. In magazine selling, they gave of their best, And turned in more money than all the rest. So its ever forward for the sophomores here, As they anticipate a great junior year. And no longer could be in the wrong class found. Our president has been young Pat Horn, Who all our troubles and trials has borne, John Tremore has been our v. p., And a capable young man he's proven to be. While Sharon Eggen, in work a believer, Was both secretary and money keeper, Janet Schwiegert has been our reporter And for her work, we must compliment her. We kept our treasury filled to the top. By selling, at football games, hot dogs and pop, We rendered a noble service true, When we cleaned up the field after football games, too. We've undergone our injustices now. And next year as sophomores, we'll show 'em all how. The highlight of the season was a 14-6 triumph over a previously undefeated Herscher football team, who had gathered a large string of consecutive victories before the Skins caught up with them. Actually, Momence's record of two victories, one tie , and six defeats does - n't te 11 the real team story. In the majority of the losses , Momence was in the thick of the fight and was seldom out-classed by a large margin. The numerous close scores indicate this. Coach Burch once again employed a single wing offense. Among those who helped make this offense function, were seven seniors. These seven include Ray Glow, who was the team signalcaller; Bill Halpin, who was perhaps the most versatile of the backs; Jim Barnes, the top groundgainer; Bob Bleyle, who was one of the top linemen in the conference along with another senior, Gene Dionne. Fred Laue showed well at end despite his going out for football for the first time this year. Guy Mortimer also joined the squad in time to lend some valuable help before the season ended. This year's frosh-soph team displayed a great deal of talent. In the future, the boys on this team should provide Momence with some interesting football. Coach Poorbaugh directed them. The most valuable player for the year 1953 was Ray Glow. Ray was the team quarterback and masterminded the team's manuevers. He has been a varsity player for three years. Jim Barnes, who was elected team captain, was named to the all-conference team. His slippery style of running and ex- pertness on defense gained him his honor. Bob Bleyle is one transfer that Mo- mence won't forget; he has made the second all-conference team for two years. This page was sponsored by B. L. TABLER SON. 36 1953 Momence Varsity Basketball Team The Redskins found the going pretty rough during the 1 953-54 season. Coach Poorbaugh's outfit lacked height which is definitely a disadvantage in this day of modern basketball. Momence1 s team probably journeyed further for one contest than any other team in the school's history, when they met Georgetown which is located al- most one hundred miles from Momence. The Skins other activities not involving conference standing were the Grant Park Holiday Tournament, Kankakee Valley Conference Tournament, and, of course the Regional. This year's team consisted of Bill Halpin at guard who teamed atthatposi- tionwith either Joe Peterson or Bob Liberty. Dave Hess and Ronnie Davie teamed at the forward spots with Davis occasionally alternating with Fred Borg- gren who played the pivot. Coach Hasbargen's team managed to turn in several fine performances, and quite possibly the boys will do as well in their high school days. Eddie Car- ter, Alan Bourke, John Bishir, Jimmy High and Danny Kirk composed the first five. Much credit for the junior high's success can be given to the lightweight team which also performed well this year. Flag Football A fairly new junior high sporting activity once again functioned. Flag foot- ball is making inroads in junior high athletics, and Momence is keeping up with modern times. The importance of flag football lies in the fact that as junior high basketball feeds high school basketball, flag football will do the same for M. C. H. S. elevens. 56
