Forenslcs opened w1th the selectlon of the glrls declamatlon team Ten g1rls were entered 1n the local contest, and the lucky SIX were chosen from a wealth of eager mater1al Carol Nelson, June Leeper and Thada Benbrook captured the iirst three places 1n the order named MarJor1e Batchelor, Helen Mledke and Jeannette Blomgren were the other three successful contestants Three traged1es ' Paul1ne Pavlovna ' The Eyes of the Bl1nd, and Humor esque and three comedles Aunt Elnora's Hero ' ' Patron's Day at the V1llage School, and Buy a Dog Lady'7 caused aud1ences to expenence both laughs and sobs In the Trlangu lar clashes w1th East Mol1ne and Rock Island, Mol1ne won the former and lost the latter, but 1n both the Maroon con testants galned 1nd1v1dual honors I these contests June Leeper a Jumor, as representatlve to the new Northwest Conference at Galesburg On the way to Galesburg, June was very calm unt1l she was W1th1n ten m1les of Galesburg Then, as Mr La1n 1nforms us she began to develop a moderate case of the knock1ng knees Facmg the aud1ence, however, June d1d very fine work and scared herself 1nto thlrd place Gzrls Declamatzon MJ dB Mdk C . . . , , . . , . . , ' l ! - . . - Q . , , Cl ' if CC - Q! 8 Extemp M B M L H k BllR Mol1ne Hlgh s forens1c act1v1t1es cul m1nated 1n the presentat1on of the three extemporaneous speakmg contests all held on the home platform The first of these was a local el1m1nat1on contest held Aprll 13 The w1nn1ng speakers and the1r subjects were B111 Rueckert Hltler s Rh1neland Move Soares Europe Marg or1e Baumgarten Cubans Governed By Dlctator Myrna F1scher, I C C Orders Lower Rates Leo Henr1ckson Edward VIII Th1rd place honors went to Myrna F1SCh er second place was captured by Marg or1e Baumgarten and B111 Rueckert cop ped first place A strong Rock Island team defimtely swamped the Mol1ne speakers on Apr1l 15 On Apr11 16 a local contest to select the Northwest Conference represen tat1ve was held by Mr La1n 1n the speech classroom In th1s el1m1nat1on contest B111 Rueckert earned the pos1t1on of N W C representat1ve Northwest Conference schools journeyed to the Maroon aud1tor1um on Frlday Apr1l 17 and managed to push the host school represented by B111 Rueckert 1nto th1rd place Mr Rueckert 1S ably qual liied for speech work because lt IS h1S custom to ga1n pract1ce by dropp1ng 1nto the Book Exchange or some other loaf ers habxtat and a1r1ng h1s pet VIEWS about mlscellaneous questlons of the day . . , . . . . i . . 0 R Bll Oratory h Bld h R Quality instead of quantity turned out for tryouts for the oratory team Com petition, therefore was keen and Judging was very difficult The success ful contestants were Arthur Conelly Baldwin Day B111 Rueckert Richard Pettit John Sandholm and Russell Johnson Arthur Conelly s presenta t1on of Ropes ran away with first place wh1le Baldwin Day s An Inter nat1onalRacketeer was a good second Science philosophy and other well versed subjects figured in the presenta t1ons of Ropes An International Racketeer Dollars Doctors and Dis Way of Life and They That Take The Sword In the verbal battle with East Moline the Moline speakers were victorious wh1le in the Rook Island con test, they were defeated by a moderate margin Arthur Conelly one of the two senior members of the team by virtue of his success both in the local and triangular contests was chosen to represent Moline at the Northwest Con ference in Rock Island Here Arthur untangled the ropes and walked away with th1rd place Four members of this team are eligible to compete next season and a strong one 1S to be expected 9 9 ' i 7 7 9 f 3 7 7 7 ' if 7?
