Romeo and Juliet, a take-off on Shake- speare's play, threw the audience into spasms of laughter, especially when one song was rendered entitled The Stomach Pump. Trial by J ury was a colorful court scene opera presented lightly to bring out the excellent humorous situ- ations. The decision of the judge to marry the plaintiif, parts cleverly taken by Harry Ekstam and Mary Chirekos, was the climax of the singing production. o I-lt e E C A 1 V W B W C D K opp B Day L y W B10 be g F Ald L b .I P R A H u I L M h j K H E o R R L D V D K 0 0 1 g W. As enjoyable as Mark TWain's famed book, the play was made even better by the Whole-hearted, bare-footed performance of Arthur Conelly who capa- bly handled the title role. Unshaven chins and pants suspended by one lone strand of rope gave an unusually realistic effect. Example: the timid geologist, Harry Ekstam, mixes up a recipe book with a patented love-making volume while proposing to Myrna Fischer. Although defeated by both junior and senior teams, they showed great promise for future seasons. The sophomores came closer to beating the champions than the seniors, but their elders defeated them by a close score in the consolation game. However, the sophs have two seasons left before graduation, and from appearances, they are likely to be champs in '37. junior Basketball On the first night of the girls' basket- ball tournament, the junior team out- pointed the seniors with the score of 34-17. They proceeded to gain first place in the tournament when the soph- omores also went down in defeat 39-28 the following night. The juniors had a large turnout at the practices, which permitted an abundance of experienced players for contests. Senior Basketball At the close of the G. A. A. basketball tournament, the senior girls' team was holding second place although it re- ceived the prize by only a narrow mar- gin, the team lost to the junior girls, but defeated the sophomores by a score of 23-20. In the latter game both teams fought madly for the lead which changed back and forth constantly. Girls ' Baseball In the baseball tournament held soon after school opened last fall, Mary Lou Nordell's team lin pic- turej came out the victor. The customary eight weeks' practice was not held, but nevertheless the four teams competing en- joyed a scrappy, laugh-filled tournament. The other teams participating are named by cap- tains in their respective stand- ings at the end of the tourna- ment: Jean Morrison, Dawn Ver- muelen, and Elsie Flick. Girls, Volleyball When the call for volley ball practice sounded last March, an unusually large number of soph, junior, and senior girls turned out. For eight weeks these ener- getic G. A. A. members came out once a week in an attempt to earn a place on a class team. At the close of these two months of practice the tournament took place, and was enthusiastically carried through. The last of the season saw Moline's greatest basket- ball improvement, even more than in past years. After playing poorly all season, the team started clicking around tourna- ment time, and after los- ing the regional final to East Moline, they came back strongly, and dump- ed the Hilltoppers in the sectional final to the sur- prise of everyone. This made Moline the only school this year, and one of the few schools in his- tory to be at the state tournament for three con- secutive years. It was Danville, the only unde- feated team at the Cham- paign tournament, who pushed Moline out in the second round in one of the best games of the state tournament. MOLINE 31-PEKIN 28 First quarter-Moline 8, Pekin 16' The Maroons then rose to great heights as they nosed out a super-smooth quintet of Pekin giants who were very, very good. The last of many rallies cinched the game for the Plow Boys in the final five minutes. DAVENPORT 45-MOLIN E 32 The Maroons lost to a superior Davenport team on New Year's Eve at the Marshall gym. The Red and Blue had everything plus a little fellow named Sim- mons 122 pointsj. It was a terrific beating with Davenport hot and Moline in a bad slump. MOLINE 25-ROCK ISLAND 20 Senneff used only five men who barely won from Rock Island. Only twenty two personal fouls were called on the Greenmen EAST MOLINE 25-MOLINE 23 Moline's cage boys looked as good in defeat as 2 they ever have or will. Combs, playing his very first minutes of the season, swished Moline to a team come ,R back after five sorry games. Feminine screeches three over times, and a two-point winning margin fHoffl made this an early season high-light. Clicking for the second time in the season the Plow Boys downed the Burgers in a fast and furious battle at Galesburg. Anders and Combs were the Frances Marlier Cliff Peterson Flip Anders Moline standouts with the re st of the team close behind them. MOLINE 26-MASON CITY 18 The invading Mason City Mohawks, State Cfhamps of Iowa, were set back by the Moline cagers. Stoecker, 6 ft. 4 in. all-state center, gave the Mohawks a 13-8 lead at the half. The Maroons rallied, went ahead, and stalled to win the battle. Davidson and Combs were the spark-plugs of the night, the former playing his first major part for the Senneif cage team. MOLINE 24-MONMOUTH 17 The Moliners defeated the Zippers on the floor with ease. Davidson, Anders and Combs led the Sen- neffmen. Jim Anders hurt three fingers badly on the trip to Mon- mouth, but he gamely played with a painful hand. MOLINE 31-KEWANEE 29 Scoring only two points in the first and last periods, the Moline team outpointed the invading Boil- ermakers. Peterson and Anders led the offensive against the Kewanee five, and Combs and Davidson looked hot on defense. Moline and Kewanee were both poor on free throws. MOLINE 35-ROCK ISLAND 11 Led by Jim Anders, the Plowmen visited the Augie gym and trampled Green's disheartened team 35-11. A flood of Moline substitutes poured in to relieve the regular five and also found little trouble hitting the hoop. EAST MOLINE ZMMOLINE 26 The visiting Moliners were again nosed out by the Holmesmen. East Moline led throughout most of the game, but their free throw percent- age was the winning factor as usual. 60 MOLINE 55-ORION 19 Moline easily outscored Orion in the first half 5 and Swanson, Sandler, and Davidson, reserves, kept the basket hot in the last half. GALESBUR-G 29-MOLINE 28 The Maroons led 21-15 at the half. The third quarter was fairly even, but the last period was Moline's Waterloo. The Senneffmen scored only one charity toss in the last quarter, while the Burgers chalked up nine points to win the thriller. DAVENPORT 32-MOLINE 30 With the score tied at 30, and only ten seconds left to play, Strassburger sank a foul line shot to win the battle. Leroy Combs gave a super-human exhibition of defensive work, giv- ing Simmons, Davenport a c e, only two baskets. MOLINE 28-MONMOUTH 16 Starting with a b a n g, Jim Anders scored four points in for- ty-Iive seconds against the hard hit Monmouth five. Moline led 21-7 at the half and easily held a safe margin. Regional Tournament MOLIN E 63-SHERRARD 15 The Maroons easily downed the small town boys. Peterson and Lindley led the scoring. MOLINE 27MHILLSDALE 22 The flashy purple team led the Maroons 10-8 at the half. Marlier staged a third quarter rally to give the Moliners a lead of 22-17. Woodburn was Hillsdale's star on the defensive. EAST MOLINE 31-MOLINE 19 East Moline defeated Moline in a convincing final. The Hilltop- gaf, kfa',ifSt ' pers led 6-0 the first quarter and 11-6 at the half. Hoff and the Sos- 5,OWg,, Mmggy, nouski brothers led the East Moline quintet in scoring. Sectional Tournament MOLINE 51-ERIE 21 The Moline five took Erie to camp in the first round without any trouble. Their 51 points were among the most rung up by any team in the State Sectionals that night. MOLINE 52-TOULON 26 Toulon was the second victim for the State- bound Maroons. The game was uneventful except for Fran Marlier's aggravating bloody nose. MOLINE 27--EAST MOLINE 15 The whistle blew, and some three thousand fans settled back in their seats to watch the Maroons take their worst beating of the season. But . . . Anders, Combs, Peterson, Marlier and Lindley, working as a five-man inspired unit, simply wiped up the iloor with the high- ly touted East Moliners. Combs held the deadeye Hoff to six points and Anders intercepted everything within twenty feet of him. It was one of the most surpris- ing victories for Moline in years of athletics, and came after three straight defeats by the Hilltoppers. Moline's alertness left East Moline powerless. State Tournament MOLINE 32-WEST AURORA 19 Led by Jim Anders and Cliff Peterson, Moline Won the first round by swamping West Aurora 32- 19. Jack McDanne1l and Flip Anders played scrappy ball as substitutes. DANVILLE 31eMOLINE 29 JM MCUQWH Rated as a tournament favorite, Danville barely slipped past the com- Jafk Sandlff ing Maroons.
