Basketball Review Viflhen the 192-l-1925 basket ball season opened, the outlook was rather dismal. Coach Senneff's hopes for a championship team were almost shattered by Ingram's football injury and Captain Erickson's extended illness. However, the Inter-class Tournament held in early December showed an abundance of good material, and the coach created out of it a team that made an enviable record before the season closed. The first part of the season was marked by several defeats, but the team continued to improve and the season ended with a whirlwind finish that swept all opposition aside and gave Moline the District Championship and third place in the Sectional Tournament. The first game of the season was lost to Cambridge just before the Holidays by only one point. The game ended with the score at 28 to 27. january ninth found the Maroons at Streator. It was a great battle. The players on both sides fought with every ounce of their strength, but Moline finally won a 22 to 18 victory. Macomb Academy was the next team to try their strength against Moline. The game was an exibition of strong offense and speedy defense by the Macomb cagers. They won 27 to 24. Superiority in both offense and defense gave the Moline Cage squad a 23 to 12 victory over Augustana Academy. Moline's eclipse in the game at Osltaloosa was almost complete. They held the Iowans to a fairly even score during the first quarter. Then Old Lady Luclc refused to smile on them longer and they lost 1-l to 30. llflisfortune continued to follow the team. They lost to Streator the following weelc 19 to 20 on the home floor. The next game was staged in the Augustana gym. Rock Island did the unexpected and defeated Moline 16 to 1-l. There was great rejoicing in the camp of our ancient enemy over their first victory in some time. From this time on our luck changed for the better. Rock Falls was reputed to be a strong team. They were. Their spirits soared high when they got the jump on Moline in the first quarter, but when they left the court their wings were drooping. Moline had defeated them 16 to 12. The next two games were away from home and Moline WO11 both of them. Un February sixth, the Maroons defeated Galesburg 20 to 15. They then went on to Macomb and avenged their previous defeat by netting a 29 to 11 victory. . The team that later won third place in the Iowa State Tournament. Hslcaloosa, was the only opponent able to down the Maroons twice. They came to Moline February fourteenth and received a nice little valentine in the form of a 25 to 20 victory, but it was anybody's game till the final whistle. Galesburg next came to Moline for another session with the Maroons. They went home with another defeat added to their list. Moline won 21 to 17. February twenty-seventh saw Rock Island playing in the Moline gym. Coach Senneffs up-and-coming team downed them 22 to 17. The last game of the schedule was with Augustana Academy. The academy boys fought hard, but Moline smothered them 37 to 9. 96
