Freshman Basketball HEAVYWEIGHT The Freshman heavyweight team entered the tourney im- bued with a good fighting spirit and did their best to uphold the honor of their class. Their chief Weakness was their lack of scoring ability. VVith the good experience they have gained this year, they should be able to make things lively for the upper-classmen next season. f3lRLS Age and experience told in the girls' lnter-class Tournament and the team uf youngsters who battled so bravely for the honor of the freshman class were forced to how in defeat before the onslaughts of the older ag- gregations. Inter-Class Basketball Tourney A new idea for class basketball was advanced and carried out this year in Moline High. It was thought best to hold the boys' Interclass Baskethall Tournament in Decemher instead of having it in the Spring as has heen the custom heretofore. The main advantage in this was that it gave Coach Senneff a good line on the haskethall material for the coming haskethall season. The tournament opened on Decemher eighth and each class was represented hy two teams, the heavy-weights and the lightweights. Four heavyweight teams took the Hoor on the opening day. The sophomores opened the tournament by overcoming the seniors 13 to 9. The '27 squad showed excellent teamwork and held the lead throughout the entire game. ln the sceond com- bat, the juniors registered a score of 12 to S against the freshmen. . Tuesday saw the lightweights in possession of the court. In a fast game, the freshman team triumphed over the sophomores in a fourth overtime period 16 to 1-L. The juniors easily downed the seniors 16 to 7 in the first game of the afternoon. Decemher tenth saw the heavyweights again in action. lt was an unlucky day for freshmen and juniors, The yearlings were defeated liy the seniors I2 to Sl, and the sophomores upset the juniors to to 113. , The next afternoon was given over to the lightweight teams. .-Xftei' putting up a stiff light the freshmen were defeated hy the juniors 5 to 10 and the seniors were eliminated hy the sophomores I3 to 123. flu Decemher twelfth two heavy and lwir lightweight teams fought in the semi- linals. The seniors opposed the juniors in the fastest game of the tourney. The juniors won hy a 325 to 15 score. Following this game, the '27 lightweights won from the freshmen. ln the final playoff, the heavy and liglitweight teams of the '36 and '27 classes opposed each other for the championships. The junior heavyweights won the title 15, lim 14 after a hard struggle. and the 'SG lightweights overcame the '27 opposition 11 to G. It was a great day for the '27 class, The girls' haskctball tournament was more interesting than usual this year. The new rules. which allowed the teams more floor work, were largely responsible for harder fought and hetter played games. The tournament opened March seventeenth with the seniors facing the sophomores in the hrst game of the series. The 'E27's fought hard hut age and experience triumphed and they were defeated 11 to 29, The juniors engaged the freshmen in the final game of the afternoon, and handed them a 3513 to 14 defeat. The next after- noon the freshmen were completely overwhelmed hy the 355 to 5 victory of the sophomores, and the juniors were swamped 13 to TIS hy the seniors. Two teams met in the semi-finals, The sophomores eliminated the juniors 23 to 22, hut it was anyone'5 game until the end and required an overtime period to name the winner. The seniors met the juniors in a final thrilling battle for the championship and won 13 to 9. l0G
