H. S. P Of that number only four attended all twelve years--Iola McCol1im, Pat Galvan, Joe Byrnes, and Jerry Cunningham. Our most educational day was the freshman initiation. This included our initiation, a picnic, and a three mile hike. We started our education in M. H. S. from the 1952 seniors, who pursuaded us to recite 'The Poem of the Year . Our class officers were: Joe Walker, President, J anett Nigh, Vice- presidentg Joyce Murphy, Sec. and Tres.g Student Council, Bob Walker and Bettygail Douglass. Betty was also cheerleader. Our Sophomore year was one of little to do. Our class officers were: President, Anita McDonaldg Vice-president, Joyce Murphy: Sec. and Tres., Joyce Snyder, Student Council, Jerry Boyer and Ianett Nigh. Cheerleader for our sophomore year was Janett Nigh. We sold programs at the Moline Basketball Tournment to help us start our activity fund for the next two years. Our junior year headed by our class officers who were: President, Bob Walker: Vice-president, Bill Footeg Sec. and Tres., Anita McDonald: Student Council, Pat Galvan and David McClureg Cheerleader, 'Lila Mar- shall: we added to our fund by having our concession stand and our jun- ior Play, Finders Creepers . By then we were able to give the '54 Seniors a banquet. The theme was 'Under the Sea . At last we are seniors! Our class officers were: President, Joe Walker, Vice-president, Jerry Boyerg Sec. and Trea. , Anita McDonald, Student Council, Lila Marshall and Joe Byrnes. David McClure was our Student Commcil President and Bettygail Douglass was our senior cheerleader. Now, as seniors, we are looking forward to our senior play which will be in March, our senior trip to Colorado, and graduation on May Ig, 1955. We are proud to be graduates of M. H. S. and will carry our memories of High School with us through out life. 1a:: :sees tanswxsxszls x Q ME EE QM Dude Bell Marvin Smith Larry Loyd Jack Mills s s M j R 2 ior 4 s L jfik k K KZ ... After dropping 3 of the first four games, the Hornets rebounded with surprising power and crushed their last four opponents to share second- place honors with Sedan in the strong Black Jack League. Opening the season, the Hornets barely squeezed past a tough Douglas eleven 7-6, then traveled to Hamilton where they dropped a hard fought 12-0 decision. On October 1 the strong Leon team wore a determined Hornet eleven down to win Z6-6. Moline then lost a tough one to Sedan at Sedan 14-13. The tide turned on October 15 as the Hor- nets trounced their Cross-town rivals, Howard, by a score of 32-6. Victory seemed so sweet the entire squad rebelled at the thought of los- ing another and proceeded to take Cedar Vale Z7-0, Peru 35-0, and Elk City 27-0 on successive weeks. The B had a lot of the same fire and proceeded to take the measure of Leon B 7-6 and the Howard B 13-6 after dropping an early contest to Sedan 13-6. The entire Moline Squad is to be praised for their determination and superb play. Jerry Cunningham and Jerry Boyer probably contributed more than their share of fine performances throughout the season as linemen. Dude Bell and Joe Byrnes stood out in the backfield offensively and defensive- ly. No one person should receive any more praise than Bob Walker as he performed as only Robert could. His positions were many, quarter- back, halfback, fullback, and tackle, but his linebacking on defense was unsurpassed. He will be sorely missed as will several other seniors. The top point-maker and ground-gainer for Moline was Joe Byrnes who scored 75 points. Two of Joe's touchdowns came on runs of 80 yards. Dude Bell was second highest scorer with a total of 51 points and also second highest ground-gainer. Most of Dude's yards gained came on line bucks. Inleague play Moline outscored its opponents 140-42, or 23. 3 to? per game. The Hornets out rushed its opponents 1, 986 to 1, 037 or 248 to 129 per game. The Hornet squad has chosen Roger Stephens, who received a broken leg early in the season, as honorary captain for 1954. Co-cap- tains selected for the year were Jerry Boyer and Joe Walker. THE FIGHTING HORNETS The Moline Hornet Basketball Team had a poor season if judged by winning, but the Hornets showed the fighting spirit which makes a great team. When a team has a bad season, the public looses interest and does not support it. This charge can not be made against the Moline students: they stayed behind their team all the way, cheering and pushing them onward. The Hornets never gave up even after a season of inability to hit the basket, losses by injury, and num- erous defeats. They played as hard to win the last game as they did the first. A team which plays under these conditions and keeps its fighting spirit should be complimented and respected. The Hornets started the season by losses to Sedan, Howard, and Leon before coming through with a victory over Grenola. They won over Severy, lost to Peru and lost the consolation trophy in the last few seconds of play to Elk City. The Hornets began the second half of the season by losing to Sedan and Leon before winning over Longton, the last victory of the year. The Hornets dropped the last four games of the season to Peru, Howard, Elk City, and Cedar Vale. The Annual Staff wishes to dedicate these pages to a great team very ably coached by Luther Gilliam. This may not have been a winning season, but as Grantland Rice said in his poem, When the Great Scorer Comes. When the one great Scorer comes To write against your name, It isn't whether you won or lost, But how you played the game. The Annual Staff congratulates the fighting Hornets and Coach Gilliam.
