Cl-IIEPS A first class selected to be a chief petty officer must first be initiated before he can wear the uniform. Under this thin veil of respectability lie some of the lowest traditions of the navy. While physical discomfort is minimal, the personal hu- miliation experienced is long and protracted. Any physical distress encountered usually con- cerns the digestive tract. PETTY OFFICERS By far the most painful tradition is for a petty officer to have his new crow tacked on .
