Moinester, who served with great heroism during the Vietnam War. Robert W. lvloinester was born 15 July 1943 in Brooklyn, New York, the son ot Robert and Gertrude Moinester. Upon graduation from St. John's University, he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve on 21 July 1965. Upon completion of training at the Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, California, LTJC lvloinester was assigned to the United States Naval Supply Activity, Danang. Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 31 January 1968, while serving as Officer in Charge of the Hue Ramp, Hue Detachment, LTJG lvloinester and his ramp personnel were enroute to their assigned work areas in Hue. Unaware that the city had been infiltrated by a large number of North Vietnamese Army units during the night, the column continued toward Hue and suddenly came under hostile mortar fire. LTJG Moinster organized his men into an infantry platoon composed of United States Navy, Marine Corps and Army personnel and led them in house-to-house clearin o eration' 1 ' g p s um er intense hostile fire. Observing enemy soldiers in a building to his front, he organized a frontal attack. Although LTJG Moinester was killed during the attack, the enemy were driven from their reinforced positions and sustained heavy casualties. ln addition to the Silver Star, LTJG lvloinester was posthumously awarded the National Order of Vietnam and Gallentry Cross with Palm from the Republic of Vietnam. His citation reads in part: . . with a ready zeal and a commendable response he fought on to the end in every mission and set a brilliant exam l 1 N- D 9 for his fellow soldiers. He died in the performance of duty. EXECUTIVE OFFICER Lieutenant Commander Vaughn G. ivlahaffey was born in Aubois, Pennsylvania on De- cember 18, 1947. Following graduation from Clarion State College in 1969, he entered Offi- cer candidate school in Newport, Rhode Island, and was commissioned Ensign on May 13, 1971. Lieutenant Commander Mahaffey has served at sea in various assignments, including duty aboard USS Oday QSS-4847, USS Cobbler CSS- 344J, and USS Clamagore CSS-3431. Since transferring from submarine service, he has served aboard USS Thomas C. Hart QPF-10927, USS Garcia QPF-10403, and USS Charleston CLKA-1131. He assumed the duties of executive officer on April 28, 1983. Hs is married to the former Sandra Pettingell. They have two children: Joel, 7, and Tracy, 3. ,,4U'l6iswAiy. ,Aa-1' f....... +- , X
