l i l l l Over three hundred years ago, the most powerful Indian tribes ih the State of New York were the three elder members of the Irociuois Nation. They were the Mohawk, Onondoga, and Senecal tribes. In 1956, with the intention, perhaps, to transferl some of the greatness and glory of the original bearers to the new namesake, the first three letters of each tribe's name were assimilated into a unique designation: only one letter isvas changed to form MOI-IONASEN. From this Indian associla- tion and heritage, too. came the epithet. Mighty 1 Wfarriors, as well as the familiar Indian figure seen I around the school and on our class ring. 1 l The search for the correct name for any publication is alvvhys a long and tedious job. The class of 1960, in persuancef of a suitable and lasting title to be borne by the l yearly publications of Mohonasen, were particularly l wary in their search, for they knew the name they chose would endure as long as Mohonasen itself. In keeping with the Indian theme the name TOTEM was finally selected. A evolved meaning was used: a monument to. or record l of, the history of a group, between which existed a close personal relationship.
