Wm . bi I .A One of the hallmarks of maturity is the ability to make decisions. Many of your ex- periences in school have been aimed at giving you a chance to make decisions. I trust that upon graduation a sufficient foundation of skills has been laid on a solid base of knowledge to enable you to build your future by the decisions you make. Each one of you has in your own hands the opportunity to become a responsible member of a free society. Collectively you have in your hands the future of mankind. Make your decisions wisely. WILLIAM B. HAESSIG, Superintendent of Schools BOARD OF EDUCATION George D. Morris, Oscar A. Stubberud, George E. Belden, john E. Moran, Norman E. Whitaker Francis S Becker John S Balwit 4 DAVID MILLMAN Principal, Senior High School You, the class of 1962, are leaving high school at a time when there are tremendous changes and ad- vances to which you can look forward in your lifetime. You have a part to play in these changes and advances. What part will you play? Set your goals high. There is not much time available for you to play this part. Each day, when past, will never return. Use your time fully and wisely, because you are important and what you do can be worthwhile. I wish success to each member of the class of 1962. HERMAN L. BRADT Principal, junior High Schoo l Much has happened these past 300 years since Arendt Van Cutler founded Schenectady in 1661. We have advanced from flying kites practically to intercontinental space travel, from the horse and buggy to multi-horse- powered automobiles, from the one-room school to our excellently equipped modern schools. This technocracy has brought us closer to our neighbors all over the world. But we have not made enough progress toward the de- velopment of a common understanding among the peoples of the world. This area needs more extensive exploration and effort than our mis- sile or space program, if we are to reap the harvest from the ideas our ancestors planted years ago. On you, the graduates of 1962, falls the heavy responsibility of creating in your life- time a world of understanding, a world of friendship, a world of peace. I hope the ed- ucation you have received will help you put forth the energy to attain these goals. My best wishes and those of the faculty go with you. A 5 The Class of 1962 is proud to dedicate its yearbook, the TOTEM, to the people who have done the most for us in our youthful years. You have given us understanding when the world is too busy with her own affairs. You have given us love even though we have often done little to deserve it. At times when we are discouraged, saddened because of failure, delighted with a new discovery, you have been there to share it with us. For all these reasons and most of all, because of our love for you, we, the Class of 1962, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to our parents. , Y f-' iifixf E..-f kr J '71 l 53? fy ii? ORCHIDS IN On a warm night, June 3, 1961, eighty-five couples crowded the transformed cafeteria to dance to the music of Paul Jarvis. Our junior prom, Orchids in the Moonlight, held true the dreams of all the chiffon wrapped girls and their white jacketed escorts. The group watched the crown- ing of Queen Patricia Barr and her court: Sandra Crandall, Sandra El- lis, Karen Heffner, Rose Lee Mone, Laurel Morris, Elaine Palmer, and Pamela Trahan. After the cere- mony the Queen and her court were honored by a dance. At the stroke of midnight the prom was concluded and only the memories remained. THE MOONLIGHT MR. VIN CIGUERRA Class Dean 58 DEAN'S MESSAGE You, the Class of 1962, are not trail blazers as were your predecessors, but you have made an even greater contribution by helping to crystallize a class demeanor-a way of doing things-and most of all, a Class tradition. These, We hope, will remain the ideals to be emulated by the classes who will take their turn as seniors. These ideals apply to your lifels endeavors. Few will have the opportunity to be trail blazers, because the basic traditions and Ways of doing things in life were established long ago for our Western civilization. All of us, however, certainly will have the opportunity to improve in our character and our life's work. Success in this is a worth accomplishment. It is not always being first that is the greatest contribution, it is doing something better than it has been done before, giving it your all and making it a little better than before. This, I believe, is the greatest contribution we all can make for our family, community, and nation. SENIOR CI-ASS OFFICERS W- LHS?-ky PICS-3 D. Stensel, v.p.g P. Barr, sec., E. Smith, parlg M. And The Beginning Graduation . . . and the end of twelve years of grade and high school . . . the beginning of a new era for you, Many of you will be going on to college, to technical schools . . . while others will be going directly to jobs. W'hichever your course may be, remember that your education doesn't stop when you finish school. You can keep on learning . . . by reading, by being constantly curious on your job, about everything you do, and finding answers to your questions. You can't stand still . . . for space-age America holds little for those who refuse to make progress. The scientists of the future need trained workers to back them up . . . technicians who can build from their plans. In business, in communica- tions . . . in arts and the professions . . . there's a future for those who keep learning . . . those who acquire more skills and more knowledge. At General Electric, the future will demand trained personnel every- where . . . to design the machines, to build them, and to operate them . . . to handle the vast amount of work to be done in new ways, with new products. General Electric is not alone in this . . . for every firm finds itself in need of men and women with ability and training, in every degree. In the years ahead, miss no opportunity to add to your store of knowledge. Keep searching for facts, for theories . . . for the basic information you will need to help you grow in your chosen field. If you do learn, you'll fit into the pattern of the future . . . ready to accept the opportunities it holds for success.
