The naming of the 1960 yearbook presented a great problem to the staff editors. We wished to carry out the Indian theme because our school's name is composed of three Indian tribal names, Mohawk, Onondaga, and Seneca. In addition, in athletics we are referred to as the Mighty Warriors. The first attempt of the staff to obtain a name was to sponsor a contest in which the entire student body was asked to participate by submitting an appropriate name. A free copy of the yearbook was to be presented to the winner. The entries were carefully considered by the editorial staff and the yearbook sponsors, but none of the proposed names seemed to be quite what we were seeking. Our editors put their heads together trying to think of a suitable title, but with little success. Miss Kliven's calls to the public library in search of the Indian words for book, student, and record were fruitless. Then with seemingly little effort Mr. Mills suggested TOTEM. He pointed out that a totem is the symbol of a group of people which records their history and tells the story of special events in their lives. This was the word which would explain a yearbook's purpose-to record and explain the events in our school lives. Thus, the 1960 TOTEM samples the activities and the way of life of the students of Mohonasen High School.
