New York OUR COMMUNITY PROJECT The Mohonasen School District was created in the summer of 1956 by the former Carman, Bigsbee and Pine Bush Districts. The Graduating Class of 1960 will be the first group of students to com- plete a full program of studies in the new district. They are also completing the first year's occupancy of the new Mohonasen Junior- Senior High School. TOTEM was the name chosen for the yearbook for the new school. The first yearbook includes this pictorial supplement about the building. This supplement will provide additional memories for this first class in their yearbook and, as a separate brochure, present to the community some of the facilities available in their high school. This venture was made possible through the contributions of various contractors and suppliers of equipment in this building. I W ., . Scienfific La bora+ory EL,uspmQn+ The naming of the 1960 yearbook presented a great problem to the staff editors. We wished to carry out the Indian theme because our school's name is composed of three Indian tribal names, Mohawk, Onondaga, and Seneca. In addition, in athletics we are referred to as the Mighty Warriors. The first attempt of the staff to obtain a name was to sponsor a contest in which the entire student body was asked to participate by submitting an appropriate name. A free copy of the yearbook was to be presented to the winner. The entries were carefully considered by the editorial staff and the yearbook sponsors, but none of the proposed names seemed to be quite what we were seeking. Our editors put their heads together trying to think of a suitable title, but with little success. Miss Kliven's calls to the public library in search of the Indian words for book, student, and record were fruitless. Then with seemingly little effort Mr. Mills suggested TOTEM. He pointed out that a totem is the symbol of a group of people which records their history and tells the story of special events in their lives. This was the word which would explain a yearbook's purpose-to record and explain the events in our school lives. Thus, the 1960 TOTEM samples the activities and the way of life of the students of Mohonasen High School. Faculty and Personnel I I9 Thr' Claws of 1960 might wt-ll luv 1-alled the Trail Blazers.
