4 8 9 10 VMM i Senior Kelly Hardy Senior Tim Murphy Boys have best season ever This year the Cross Country Team finished with a record of 16 wins and 0 losses. This is the best record ever compiled by a Cross Country Team in Mohawk history. With that 16- 0 record, the team brought home the Division II Section I Title. Coach 1-ape said that the biggest thrill of the season was beating Neshannock in the last meet of the year to win the section title and go undefeated! Leading the team this year was Senior Tim Murphy with 145 points. Sophomore Brian Spohn 124 points, Sophomore Tim McDowell 107 points and Junior Troy Stanley 93 points. The Varsity Team finished in 2nd place at the W.P.l.A.L. Qualifier and 5th at the W.P.l.A.L. Finals. At the Tri-County Meet, the team finished in 6th place. In the J.V. Division, Eric Craig finished 1st. In the Junior High Division, the team cap- tured the championship for the second straight year. They were led by Richard Butler and Mike Gwin. Congratulations on an ex- cellent season. GOOD LUCK next year and keep up the winning Mohawk tradition. 1987 Season Record Mohawk 28 . . Blackhawk 31 Mohawk 28 . . . Beaver 80 Mohawk 28 . . The team had a bond of pride and unity that held them together. Sophomores stepped in to re- place Seniors and bruised, battered run- ning backs played with a never-say-die attitude. This was a great way to start a school year. A football team that was 7-3, 5-3 in league. It was the second straight win- ning season, and the best since 1965. F-ven though they did not make the play- offs, the team played with the heart of champions, scoring 205 points and only giving up 15.9 points per game. Junior Greg Vogel led thf team with 579 yards rushing, while Brian King's seven touchdowns was tops on the team. Senior David Benedict led the team with 74 tackles, 31 solo. Shawn Primavere’s 7 aerial thefts led the defense. Vogel with 4 fumble recoveries led in that dept. Ju- nior Matt Houck passed for 794 yards and 7 touchdowns. The season started with a 19-6 victory over Freedom. The team continued with a 32-0 romp over Neshannock, the biggest win margin in eight years. The season ended by stunning Farrell 27-21 at Farrell. All the hard work began in November 1986 when Howie Galbreath, Rich McConnell, Dave Benedict, and Mark Frederick were named Captains. The four worked all winter and spring condi- tioning the team. They also had fund- raisers that supplied the team with equipment. The players and coaches are not the only ones who should take credit for the winning season. Let's not forget the man- agers, band, cheerleaders, and the faith- ful fans w ho showed up in heat, rain, and cold. With a strong group of lettermen re- turning next year, the Warriors should improve the 7-3 record and make the playoffs. The eighth grade team fin- ished with an excellent 15-2 record and tied for first place with Ellwood. The leading scorer was Joe Gallo with 180 points. Rob Andrews and Ja- son Williamson combined to lead the team in rebounding. The two offensive, as well as defensive, keys were Gary We- ber and David Vendemia. The team did great and is looking forward to next year’s season. The seventh grade team finished with a 4-6 record. Donald Esenwein led in scor- ing with 73 points. The oth- er three lettermen are Shannon Arena, Jacalyn McKinney, and Penny Sizer. Jacalyn McKinney was to the 1st Team All-Section. Shannon Arena and Jaca- lyn McKinney were on the Lawrence County All-Star Team, which played against the Mercer County All-Stars. Junior High Girls The 1987-88 Mohawk Junior High Girls Basketball Team had a very successful season. Their record was 12-2, losing only to New Wilmington and Ellwood City by a slight margin. Mr. Swanson said, “This year’s team was fast, well-balanced, and enthusiastic, as well as good shooters. They had a lot of hustle and proved to be a good team. He also said, We had a GREAT year!” Seniors Amy McCready, Jacalyn McKinney, Miss Kelly (coach). Throughout the pre-season, the team played tough, staying close against larger teams. Then the big disappoint- ment hit. After leading River- side the entire game, a Pan- ther player scored with less than 15 seconds to go. The backs and spirits of the young Warriors were broken. A feeling of utter frustra- tion continued through the season caused by a 2 point loss to Laurel at the Christmas Tournament, a 1 point loss to Frew Mill (W.P.I.A.L. “A” Champs) at the buzzer, and finally another 1 point loss to Riverside. The loss to River- side did the most damage, as it knocked the winter War- riors” from the playoffs race. There were some highlights of the 1987-88 season; Kevin Wrona's 23 consecutive double figure scoring games, scoring 1 90 points on a spirited Shen- ango team, and upsetting the highly praised Union Scotties. Kevin Wrona was the War- riors scoring champ and Todd Lape led in rebounding. But let's also recognize Craig Miller, Pat Silhanek, Todd Mrozek and the rest of the team. Let’s give thanks to Mr. Samsa and Mr. Hodge who sac- rificed their time to teach the players the meaning of bas- ketball, how to accept the for- tunes and anguish of life, no matter the degree. The play- ers also deserve special recog- nition for devoting many of their high school days to cre- ate memories. Thanks to the managers and stats who as- sisted the team in a silent way. And finally, thanks to the student body, cheerlead- ers and fans for their support through the good times and bad. You deserve a round of applause! Their hopes blossomed into an exciting, unpredictable season and a 5-7 league record (6-9 overall). Beginning with a big win, the War- riors opened league play with a shock- ing degfeat of Laurel, who suffrered only one other loss and eventually cap- tured the section title. The year ended with an equally impressive win over Wilmington. This win broke a four game losing streak, avenged a previous narrow loss, and prevented the Grey- hounds from sharing the section title with Laurel. Providing quite a bit of competi- tion, the Warriors suffered several narrow defeats (four of their seven by only one run), which kept fans on pins and needles. All in all the 1988 season, which marked Mr. Pezzuolo’s thirtieth year as coach, proves that the Warriors could successfullycompete with the sections best teams. We have just arrived at the amusement park where we are to spend the day, Canada’s Wonderland Theme Park. After a five hour drive to Toronto, Canada, the French Club is excited and, of course, tired since no one has slept since we left at one o’clock. After a fun-filled day, we pull out at three-thirty and are on our way to The Old Spaghetti Factory in Toronto for dinner. When dinner is over, we once again board the bus and are on our way to the CN Tow- er. At the top, one can see Toronto spread out for miles below. Next we're off to Niagara Falls, our last stop. Although it is cold, we all wish to see the lights on the falls. Now it’s time to head home. We arrive back at two in the morning. Half-asleep, every- one staggers off the bus. A special thanks to Mrs. Shira, who made the trip pos- sible, and to our bus driver and chaperons. 59 FBLA Officers: Brenda .Shuluga, Treasurer; Heather Patton. We ac- complished many worthwhile projects. Our main concern from Sep- tember until February was the Region 2 Leadership Confer- ence. It was held at our school on February 18, 1988. Nine area schools attended the competition. A lot of hard work and much planning went into making this conference successful. A great job was done by all who helped. FBLA conducted many oth- er events throughout the year. Heather Druschel was the chairperson for our annual Coffee Social, held on Novem- ber 20. We invited area busi- nessmen and women into our school for a program and re- freshments afterward. This gave us an opportunity to meet our future bosses. We honored our secretaries and business teachers on Sec- retary’s Day, April 27 by deliv- ering flowers to them, our way of saying thanks . The trading post, operated during activity periods, sold many different items this year. Thanks to all the mem- bers who helped with it. Members, along with Ms. Henry, attended state work- shops and conferences. Heath- er Patton and Andrea Young both received trophies for a great job in their competitive events at the State Conference. Being a member of FBLA can help a person to grow. It is an excellent experience for what the real business world has to offer. T i ,y 1 Future Homemakers The Future Homemakers of America is an organi- zation made of both male and female members. It is a learning organization, not only about oneself, but also about others around us. We spread spirit all through our school by having special selling events for each holiday. We sold candy-grams for both Halloween and Christmas and for Valentine’s Day, we sold heart-shaped cookies. We also sold pies, roni rolls, and hoagies throughout the year. We had prepared a dinner for the School Board. We attend- ed our annual FHA HKRO State Conference, which is fun, but also a good experience. We, in the end of a year, become FHA members for life. FH A Officers: Kim Stoner, Secretary; N'orene Huncik. President: Sherry Barnes. Treasurer: Ronda Book. Vice-President Crazy Eighis -Scott Palmer, Gary Veon, Mary Werner, David Clark, Amiee Woods, Heidi “I believe in the future . . . “I believe in the future of farming with a faith born not of words, but deeds ... ”, These are part of the words the eleven new members of FFA had to memorize for initiation. The officers for ’87-’8S were: Bill Shiderly, President; Daryl Musser, Vice-President; Diane Ketterer, Secretary; James Fee- zle, Treasurer; Ivetta Boren, Sentinel; Andrew Kushma, Re- porter; James Ladesic, Chaplin. There were four Keystone Farmer Awards given to our chap- ter. The members that received them were: Christina McDowell, Loretta Boren, Bill Shiderly, and Daryl Musser. The FFA Demonstration Team went to Harrisburg this year with the theme, Bytes for Bits , for competition. The team members were: Christina McDowell, Andrew Kushma, Robert Glenn, and Todd Shiderly. Alternates were: Brad Kane, Robert Sinkovich Brian Sump, and Ken Harmon. They placed fifth out of seventeen. The FFA sold citrus and flower bulbs this year. They are also planning a Food for America with the third graders. Record keeping and work have always been a part of FFA membership. This year several members did well at state with their project books. Bill Shiderly received a gold, while Brad Kane earned a silver. Both Loretta Boren and Brian Sump won bronze. The FFA and FHA also won a blue ribbon at Harrisburg for square dance. The FFA is under the supervision of Mr. Cliff Wallace.
