Dedication 4 jOHN MICHAEL O'LAYER Such a little space of time That we could get to know him, And still all these memories To remind us all of the sweet fellow Student we all loved and admired. And then . . . There was someone laying so still, Someone they called . . . john. The heavy incense of flowers, The long periods of silence, Andasobortwo . .. And the lingering thoughts . . . Thoughts that conjure up sharp pictu Too vivid pictures! john yelling himself hoarse at the basketball games, res, Always playing a practical joke on someone, But then he could always take a joke, too. john was good . . . Good for all of us to have known him. He was such a sweet, kind, and Conrteous boy, a loyal friend to all. He enriched our lives, with his Presence. He showed us how to have a Good time, But yet with more serious Times. And they called that someone lying so Still . . . john. But john would never lie as still as That or he would never let people cry Over him. No! that wasn't john, Not the john we all knew and loved. The memory of his friendliness, sweet Smile, and courtesy will always be Lingering behind. This is the johnny we all want to remember. Foreword Have you ever realized what life would be like without BOOKS? The education you now hold would be impossible to obtain, As each generation began, they would have to start from the beginning, for our ancestors could not have passed on their knowledge and experiences so that each future generation might benefit from them. The education you obtain in high school is one that not only developes your mind but also your body and your spirit, You learn to work not only as an individual but as part of a unit. What you learn or do not learn in high school will have an in- fluence on your entire life. We hope that you will be able to relive this past year and the years before by turning the pages of this book, THE TOTEM. Sxcaxfamv Jyqgg J, Vgngovvs ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL Graduates of l96S: oft There are strong pressures placed on present day students to make the most of their abilities. Our country is now facing, and for many years to come will face, shortages in all types of trained personnel. It is probable that these shortages will become more serious before they are alleviated. There is no question that educational opportunities should be broadened, Increased facilities for training personnel for all types of specialized occupations are needed. Any philosophy that seeks to limit educational opportunity to a select few will serve to frustrate the needs of our nation and its expanding economy, My thanks go to the Class of 1965 for the varied contributions you 5 have made to our educational system. I hope your future will be one that V' is commensurate with your desires. l es u Herbert . MARY ANN MCCLELLAND By receiving the highest scoring on an examination, Mary Ann received the Betty Crocker Homemaker of To- morrow award. Sponsored by General Mills, Inc., this test is given to find an outstand- ing senior homemaker. Class History On September 1, 1964, over 170 seniors entered the second and final year of high school education in our new building. Two welcomed additions to our class were our foreign exchange students Chris Kalemba and Henk Mulder. At our first class meeting we elected the officers that would lead us through the year. They were: Joyce Samsa, President, Bernie Crespi, Vice President, Ellen Kennedy, Secretary, John Gebhart, Treas- urer. Also helping with the task were the members of the Executive Council-Barb McCullough, Linda Leech, Sherry Roberts, Rick Wmger, and Dave Dawson. Miss Matthews, Mr. Liscik, and Mr. A. Pezzuolo were our very capable advisors. The first activity of the year was our class weiner roast which was successful in getting all of us working together. The gathering was held on the school grounds with everyone circled about the bon- fires. Due to rain we were forced inside to the gym, but our spirits were not dampened. The Halloween Parade found us working on our class float. Although we didn't win a prize, the fun that went along with its construction was worthwhile. Football season ended with a successful 7-2 record. Senior Nightj, our last home game, gave special recognition to our senior players, band members, and cheerleaders. Following football season, we sponsored the annual Football Dance which'honored our players. The players elected Donna Grimes and joe Pepe to reign as King and Queen over the event. Our Senior Class play, The Perfect Idiot, was enjoyed by all who attended it. The play, a three act comedy, was presented on December 3 and 4 and was under the able direction of Mr. Fredrick J. Schaefer. Another success was the traditional Christmas Dance which we hosted on December 19. The cafe- teria, beautifully decorated to bring out the Christmas spirit, was the scene of the dance. The music was by jerry Earle and a floor show was also presented. School spirit ran high as was evident in the cheering sections during basketball season. Our first year in Section 14 proved highly successful as our team captured the section crown. Pride in the team and coaching staff was reflected atlthe victory assembly on February 22. The boys went on to tournament play in Pittsburgh. Everyone had a good time at'our second class party held on February 27. A brief program in .the auditorium was followed by basketball, volleyball, etc. The evening was topped off with the serv- ing of refreshments in the cafeteria. Mohawk was proud to host the annual Science Fair. Many area schools were represented and Mohawk made its usual good showing. One of the most memorable events of the year was the 1965 Junior-Senior Prom. Stairway to the Stars was chosen by the junior Class as the theme. Baccalaureate services were on May 30. Our class attended its last social activity on May 31 with the Senior Dinner Dance. It was held at the Croation Club in Bessemer where a dinner was served. On june 1, 1965, the most solemn of all high school events was held-commencement. The final chapter of our high school education has been written and as the doors close behind us, we leave Mohawk High School, but the memories of joys and sorrows shared, remain. 53 5 if Z N N ' i 54 UNDERCLASS N -- 55 Leora Abraham Esther Adams Robert Annichenni Dave Argiro Kathleen Bara Raymond Beadling Larry Belton Barbara Bianchi Carole Bianchi Rita Blashak Z 'ii.
