The team is determined to make their first Iroquois season a winning one. Scores: Iroqouis League Iroqouis League MOHAWK OPPONENTS MOHAWK OPPONENTS 17 Frankfort .,.. .... Although wrestling for the initial time, the grapplers won second place in the Iroquois League. Coached by Mr. Baker, they provided excitement by defeating Ilion, Herkimer, Oneonta, and Little Falls. They lost only to Norwich, the champions. Louie Reinhardt and Bob Swartz are the only members graduating. We extend our congratulations to the team which made Mohawk's first wrestling venture a success. TRACK As this book goes to press, Mr. Tolpa's track team has won a dual meet from Little Falls and lost one to Norwich. They beat Little Falls, 8Of24, and lost to Norwich, 67f37. In a meet held at Oneonta, the score was 52 2f3 to 50 1f3 in favor of Oneonta. VOLLEYBALL AND RIFLE The Iroquois League introduced a new page in our winter sports program. For the first time, Mohawk has had volleyball and rifle teams, of which we may be justly proud. The volleyball team, guided by the excellent coaching of Mr. Edward Pushkar, completed a fine season, winning three and losing only two. In the tournaments, at the end of the season, Mohawk defeated both Norwich and Oneonta, but lost in the finals to Ilion. Mr, Snyder's five marksmen made a Hne showing of straight shooting throughout the whole season. With marksmanship which should have made our rivals turn green with envy, the Mohican shootingffive captured fourth place in the Syracuse Sectionals. In these sports, as in all others, the students of Mohawk have shown a willingness to work, a sense of responsibility, and excellent cooperation. These things, along with the expert training and fine school spirit, made Mohawk's first season in volleyball and rifle matches extremely successful. Congratulations! And thanks to the members of those teams for representing our school so well. 8 ,NSU m 4 0t:,j .p. 7' ,gf5? Baylor aalfdff , , 1952 VARSITY FOOTBALL For the first time in six years, the Mohawk High School gridders captured the M.M.V.I. crown. With a very impressive 6 wins and 0 losses, the team outfscrapped, outfran, and outfcharged their opponents. Under the fine coaching of Lloyd Baker and Edward Pushkar, the grid team displayed the precision of a wellfoiled machine. With Mr. Pushkar as its coach, the line charged and tackled viciously to hold the six opponents to a total of 32 points, while Mr. Baker's hackfield men plowed through the baffled foes for a total of 205 points. With the comhined efforts of line and hackfield, the champions outfscrapped Ogdenshurg to a score of 4543, and one week later handed Ilion a 12fO setback. The highfriding Mohican team disf played its clockflike precision again, when they went to Watertown and won, 39f6. Herkimer, our traditional rival, played host to the Mohican team at what was to he, for hoth teams, one of the most important games of the year. Both were undefeated up to that date. Again Mohawk displayed its Hne sportsmanship and excellent handling of the football, and handed Herkimer a 12f7 loss. Next, with 4 wins and O losses, the Mohicans trounced Auburn, 39f6. With their fate hanging in the balance, Mohawk's warriors went into the season's final game fully aware of its significance. Beating Little Falls would mean an undefeated season, the Herkimer Telegram Trophy, and the M,M.V.I. crown. With this in mind, the strong Mohican team crushed its opponent, 58fO. This game, which ended the hest season for Mohawk since 1946, also ended the last foothall season at Mohawk High for six seniors: Bill Kaples, Tom Lacy, Lyman Hall, john White, Ronnie March, and Ed Bouchard. Polley VARSITY BASKETBALL The 195263 Mohawk High School basketball squad had, as an overfall record, 12 wins and 6 losses. Their drive and stamina enabled them to finish as M.M.V.l. champions for the second consecutive year. This year also marked Mohawk's first season in the new Iroquois League, in which our warriors copped third place honors. Only Norwich and Qneonta topped Mohawk as the season came to a close. Next year Coach Thornton's hoopmen will have another crack at the Iroquois championship, however, they'll be shooting for it without the assistance of Lyman Hall, Ronnie March, Dick Francisco, and George Baron, the four seniors who worked consistently with their teammates to make the '52753 basketball season a successful one for Mohawk. Whether or not next year's material will develop into a championship team is still unpredictable. We can be sure, however, that they will do all in their power to uphold Mohawk's reputation as a hardfworking, cleanfplaying team. Who could ask for more? 13 JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL First Row!-M. Under the direction of Ivliss Helen Keefe, many new sports activities have been made available to the girls. More important than improving the girls' athletic abilities, is the emphasis put on good sports- manship and team play. Most of the girls who participate in after school sports do so only for ref laxation and enjoyment. Each sport provides a wholesome outlet for pentfup energy in addition to developing competitive spirit and fair play. The girls' soccer season began in line style with a playday, at Mohawk, in which Ilion, Herkimer, Little Falls, Norwich, and Mohawk participated. Under Joanne Brown's efficient management, the girls later kicked their way to victories over llion, Herkimer, and Frankfort. Although there were a few minor casualties, most of the girls managed to end the season with only bruised shins. 21 .lean Pugh, E. Hughes, P. Staley, S. Cor' Sitts, L. Thornton, D. Suits, H. GIRLS' SPORTS . . continued Field hockey, a new sport this year, brought many enthusiastic girls to the field to try their luck. Though they had little practice, the team held up valiantly against teams with years of experience behind them. The next sport to appear on the scene was volleyball. In the short season, Johanna Kroll ex' pertly led the teams to victories as well as defeats but everyone enjoyed the sport tremendously. Duringthe winter and into the spring, many girls went bowling one night a week. With Mrs. Hilyard as coach and Carolyn Grimmer as manager, bowling turned out to be a very successful sport. The girls won every match except one, and even beat the boys' bowling team! In January, basketball began with Dorothy Van Zoeren the manager of this fast sport. The girls played hard in an intramural tournament, besides practicing for games with other schools. The seniors, with many able, experienced players, won the tournament. The girls began the season with a few defeats but later beat Herkimer twice and Frankfort once. V The girls began bouncing around on the trampoline in the spring. In this sport, which has no team play, the girls compete only against each other. June Barrett managed this sport in which a large number of girls participated. The softball team began its season by beating Ilion. The girls bolted the ball around like prof fessionals, and Manager Claudette LaFountain was proud of them. The team went on to have a good season and loads of exercise. In March and April, recreational games were played. These games included badminton, ping pong, and deck tennis. Although the purpose of this new sport was to give the girls individual recreation, they traveled to Norwich in May along with the bowling team for a playday . . a day of fun. All in all, the sports program served to develop emotional stability, physical poise and mental alertness for the participants . . . thus are built stronger, finer citizens. 22 jafffffwf fw' f ff U ff 4,lK4 Q I ,, O f xx My , QQM fp ff f X ff? Its program of physical education is designed to givc each individual an opportunity to develop his body as well as his mind. Other organizations in our system.try to provide opportunities for people with special dramatic, musical, or artistic skills to develop those skills as much as time and talents will allow. On the other hand, we have groups whose chief reasons for being are to promote in their members a desire to be of service to others . . . either other individuals, the school, or the community. Out' standing among these service organizations one might mention Library Council, N.H.S., F.H.A., F.F.A., Art Club, and Executive Council. Although a comparatively new organization, the Library Council Club is well known for the service it has rendered to the whole school in recent years. With the exception of purchasing, the council mem'- bers take full charge of running and maintaining an efficient school library. In order that they may more effectively serve those who come to them for inf formation, the staff has had to build up its own knowledge of reference material and the principles of library operation. Processing and circulation of books, planning appropriate and attractive displays, and checking the shelves keep them busy during their library hours. They are there to serve us, and they do it efficiently and willingly. Made up of outstanding students in our school, the National Honor Society is founded upon the belief that scholarship, character, leadership, and service are qualities by which high school pupils might be judged. One of the outstanding contribuf tions in the field of service resulted from their reaction when the Orange Echo was about to be given up as a journalistic project. Realizing the importance of a school newspaper, N.H.S. offered its financial aid, and members of the group took over much of the actual work of publishing. Since that time, other people have become interested in working on the staff and the paper is again a regular feature on our school program. Many of the staff leaders are members of the N.H.S., but the financial burden is no longer their responsibility. A group of forty girls ,have worked together under the title of F.H.A. to develop in the girls of our locality an interest in home economics, creative leadership in home and community life, and to promote democracy in home, community and nation. During the present year they have served others on several occasions. At each regular P.T.A. meeting, girls from this group have cared for and entertained small children while their parents attended the meeting. The Christmas season found them eagerly packing a box to be sent to Korea. They also baked cookies to take as gifts to the shutfins at the Old Ladies Home, and, while there, entertained the ladies with a skit and Carol singing. When the time came for raising money toward the March of Dimes Campaign, the girls baked and sold brownies, turning the proceeds in to the March of Dimes fund. The 25 boys who have been members of the EEA. for this year have also had service as one of their goals. Their most spectacular achievement of the year was the planting of 3,000 trees for the Mohawk Fish and Game Club. They have also helped in planning the landscaping of the school grounds and athletic field. Were it not for the willing cooperation of the Art Club, many projects would find scant advertisf ing. Whenever there is a poster to be made for a play, a musical, a dance, or art work to be done on The Mohican or the Orange Echo, members of this group have given their time and talent to get the work done. At Christmas their efforts made our halls and windows gay with artistic and colorful decorations. Truly the school is a brighter place because of their willingness to serve others. Supervising all the other clubs and school activf ities has been the Executive Council. They have scheduled assemblies, planned programs, and pub' lished a student guide. Quite beyond their regular routine, they undertook the huge task of organizing the campaign for the local March of Dimes. Family Night will long be remembered as an outstanding success and as a profitable venture. This program included an auction, a bake sale, side shows, and a variety of other entertainment. Pupils from kinder- garten through twelfth grade participated, and townspeople lent their hearty support. The total of 53,225.00 turned over from the school is adequate testimony to the success of the project. While we have mentioned the spectacular examples, there are many others whose work behind the scenes is equally important. Here we Hnd, among others, stage crews, projector operators, ushers, ticket takers, and members of the welcoming committee. Even though they are not organized under any particular name, they are still giving outstanding service to the school. X MUSIC 571 4' Ulf ' MIXED CHOIR Front Rowfj. Loefler, M. Musella, jean Pugh, S. Among other highlights of the year was the development of their championship basketball team. Under the coaching of Mr. Tolpa, the team rose to first place in the newly formed junior High M.M.V.I. League. Other new activities this year included the formation of the Junior High National Honor Society and the Student Safety Patrol. As has become customary, the Junior High also took its annual Held trips to Fort Herkimer. Cooperstown, and Albany. Social events of outstanding importance were the Hallowe'en party, several dances, and their annual banquet. In the Held of music, the junior High was also busy. Many of the pupils reported regularly for the Junior High Choir, and several members have places in the High School Band. Civic organizations have profited by the generosity of the junior High treasury. Fifty dollars went to the March of Dimes, one hundred to the Community Chest, twentyffive to the Ambassador fund, ten dollars each to the Herkimer 'County Tuberculosis Association and the Red Cross. Even with these substantial donations, the treasury had a suiiicient balance to enable the group to top off their very successful year with a picnic in june. 39 FRESHMAN CLASS IA-H1 Front Row-B. We are entering a new era-one in which the guiding spirit must be the preservation of democratic principles and extension of the concept of the brotherhood of man. This spirit is an integral part of the American character . . . it must provide inspiration to a world beset by fear and confusion. Dictators have always given special emphasis to training young citizens. They know the future depends on the willingness of young people to accept their principles, however infamous. Thus, for the sake of freedom everywhere, the spiritual values identiied with the American way of life must be firmly established in the minds of American youth today. Only then can our country meet the tref mendous responsibility of world leadership which will be ours for years to come. That is the most important accomplishment of your school yearsdand we salute Mohawk's Class of '53 on a job well done. Remington Rand INC. 7 SPRUCE STREET, ILION, N.
