Perhaps not in the same way as our forbears, but pioneers we are. Yes, pioneers in an Atomic Age. Although through the years great advances have been made toward gaining a complete understanding of the atom, this research is still in a fairly primitive state. As time has gone by and knowledge about the atom has been gained, the defi- nition of the atom has undergone several marked changes, for example in 1830- An atom is basic matter, it's indivisible, and in 1903- An atom is the smallest part of matter that can be combined, and now in 1955- An atom consists of a nucleus and a number of electrons. lt has been only in recent years that man has realized the importance of the atom and the part it may play in the future. In our lifetime we may be in a position where our decisions will bring about the very facts that man is so diligently seeking about the atom. Man's capacities have never been measured, nor are we to iudge of what he can do by any precedents, so little has been tried, Henry David Thoreau. We chose, Pioneers in the Atomic Age for the theme of this book, because we realize we are iust that. Every subiect we take during our four years in High School is preparing us for the future whether it be atomic or otherwise. We take this means to express our sincere appreciation to the business people, the teachers, the students, and everyone else who has helped us in any way with the construction of this annual.
