Yes, pioneers in an Atomic Age. Although through the years great advances have been made toward gaining a complete understanding of the atom, this research is still in a fairly primitive state. As time has gone by and knowledge about the atom has been gained, the defi- nition of the atom has undergone several marked changes, for example in 1830- An atom is basic matter, it's indivisible, and in 1903- An atom is the smallest part of matter that can be combined, and now in 1955- An atom consists of a nucleus and a number of electrons. lt has been only in recent years that man has realized the importance of the atom and the part it may play in the future. In our lifetime we may be in a position where our decisions will bring about the very facts that man is so diligently seeking about the atom. Man's capacities have never been measured, nor are we to iudge of what he can do by any precedents, so little has been tried, Henry David Thoreau. We chose, Pioneers in the Atomic Age for the theme of this book, because we realize we are iust that. Every subiect we take during our four years in High School is preparing us for the future whether it be atomic or otherwise. We take this means to express our sincere appreciation to the business people, the teachers, the students, and everyone else who has helped us in any way with the construction of this annual. any people think of the faculty as people who do nothing but teach class But if you would look more closely you would find them a great group of people in close relationship with students, doing many things The teachers hold a get-acquainted pic- nic the first night of school. if R 5 r ,fl . Q O O O ADMINISTRATION a FACULTY Dear Students: lt is only fitting that a message in our annual should contain a word of commendation to our annual staff who has worked assiduously in the preparation of this, your 1956 yearbook. I am certain that as the years go by and when you have opportunities to peruse the book, recalling pleasant memories, you will be increasingly appreciative of the fine work that has so obviously been done on this annual. So I should like to extend my heartiest congratulations to a very capable staff and to Mrs. Elsie Wingo, the annual sponsor, for a iob exceedingly well done. To the remainder of the student, body I should like to say, Thank you for the splendid cooperation you have given the staff and myself during this year. I have enioyed working with you immensely, and l should like to wish each of you complete success in all of your future under- takings. One word of admonition, however. Always remember that the principle of honesty, fair play, and good sportsmanship, the basic fundamentals upon which our democratic way of living has been established, should KENNETH P. SCHOONOVER-Ault, Colo.p A.B., M.A., Superintendent be paramount in your association with others. This, I feel, is of ex- treme importance at this time since there are numerous countries in our world that are ruled in a very despotic manner by so called advocates of the better way of life, who are continually striving to eliminate our democracy. Therefore, all of us must work to show those who live under the bonds of totalitarians that our way is far superior. Very truly yours, KENNETH P. SCHOONOVER Superintendent DONALD L. DAVIS-Winfield, Iowa, B.A., M.A., Principal, Student Council. Dear Students: Congratulations to the annual staff for a fine iob of preparing the 1956 annual. I am sure that your efforts will keep alive many happy experi- ences for MCHS students in the years to come. To the graduating class of 1956 I extend my best wishes for a most successful future. The young people of today face a future which will challenge their best effort and leadership. l hope your years in MCHS have helped to make the problems which lie ahead a bit easier to solve. May all of the years ahead be pleasant ones.
